As we have a "greatest british rock band of all time"poll, I'd like to start a more specific (even if still a large section of music) one.
So, what's your favourite progressive-rock band of all time? |

Dream Theatre all the way. Then a close race between King Crimson and Rush. |

i'm kind of insulted that you put up jethro tull over rush....jethro tull can go jump off a cliff...
also, while they're definitely a more modern rock band...coheed & cambria is a freaking sweet progressive group....incredible music

I would label Dream Theater as progressive metal and I'm not sure if that's what Gary_Gygax is looking for.
Anyway, I listen a lot more progressive metal than progressive rock, but if I have to pick one band for this thread it's going to be Marillion. |

Spock's Beard or Flower Kings. Both bands are great. Dunno how to categorize Ayreon as it's almost every progressive genre mixed into one, but if you enjoy progressive music, Ayreon: The Human Equation is just awesome. |

I'd probably call them progressive metal as well. All of their albums are great, the consistency is just unbelievable. |

NOT PROG!?!?!?!?
Are you joking man?
They are ALSO prog rock, not only, but surely they are, like Frank Zappa is also prog-rock, like Jethro Tull is also prog-rock.
Prog-rock is a vaste music concept, and Floyd are really in it.
Surely ELP are 99% prog-rock, though. |

Lot's of bands missing for me on that list. Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Tool among others. While not my personal taste at all, i believe Dream Theater are among the best around and while maybe not completely fitting the description i'd personally vote for Blind Melon. |

Zappa & The Mothers surely fit the "prog-rock" section, but, as I wrote, not only. They were sooooo special, they deserve a special category, they were, they are simply genial.
I put on the list names that are 99% prog-rock band (with the exception of Jethro Tull, another genious).
I read votes for Dream Theater and Ozric, that's ok, they are prog in a certain way, but I think they can't be compared to the great 70s prog-rock bands. |
