The Picks: Warpstone Open 2
Sixteen teams come through the qualifiers ready to compete for the Mutation prizes!
Plorg is standing by ready to review the teams in this annual FUMBBL Major Tournament.
We will look at a few teams a day in the final week before the draw.
During this time the teams can still play to get their team into shape,
so remember that Treasury, TR/TS, and even player Skills are not quite final.
Some teams are in good shape and are planning to wait, others might take low-risk high-cash games,
and a select few are struggling through rough post-Qualifier recovery periods.
There is not a wide variety of races in this matchup,
suggesting consistent dominance by certain rosters in the extremely high TR realm.
Orcs, Wood Elves, Dark Elves are all in force as expected.
One lonely Chaos Dwarf team hopes to take the prize,
while two Chaos and two Skaven teams are here to defend their Mutation monopoly.
In the first group of teams we will check out the defending champions and their jolly green friends.
The Orcs
Four Orc teams total. Three of them lead this group with TS of roughly 245.
Black Axe is the leanest with TR around 288, followed by Deadland Flashgitz at 294
and Clann Twelvetooth at 318. Some of that TR difference comes from their Treasury amounts.
Gnaw Thigh Clan hangs on with a "low" 238/195.
The top three all have fifteen players (two of them Dirty) with 160-250k on hand for a Star.
They also have a Troll and one Goblin (with Catch) for those Turn 8 TTM one turn TDs.
Black Axe
Defending Champions
Coach: Petter
- Three Warpstone Mutations
- Five Block MightyBlow Guards
- Two +AG Pass Blockers
Black Axe is still wearing all their trophies from last year.
Two Heads on the MA 3 AG 2 Blob seems like just a fashion accessory.
Spikes on a DP Kicker is decent because everyone could use extra armor.
Very Long Legs is a great bonus for a +AG Pass Blocker.
On this team the Blobs make the casualties while the Blitzers, +AGs, and DPs do the scoring.
The mutated +AG Pass Blocker is by far the usual choice to score the TDs.
Deadland Flashgitz
Coach: Fejd
The 6448 Blitzer is sure to be a major threat to any elves he meets.
If he fails then two other MB Tackle Blitzers can fill in.
On this team the Blitzers do most of the scoring while all the positionals make the casualties.
They have an exceptional winning record so we expect this team to go far.
Clann Twelvetooth
Coach: ankkh
- Three Block Guard MB Blobs
- One +AG +MA Strip Baller
- One Tackle/Diving Tackler
The Blobs on this team make the casualties and a surprising number of TDs as well.
Otherwise expect one of the three +AG or Dodge players to make the points.
The Tackle DT is a great anti-elf/skaven device to mark the peskiest one-turners (and we'll be seeing a few).
Gnaw Thigh Clan
Coach: deckerCKY
- Two Goblins
- Three Dirty Players
- One big heap of trouble
Suffering from one of the lowest TR/TS in the tournament,
this team simply has fewer skills on the players. Mighty Blow is a luxury here.
What makes it worse is that a huge chunk of the TR is on the three Dirty Players.
Getting into a fouling war would cause the two highest SPP players on the team to be sent off by the ref.
Next time we will look at the quartet of slippery and quick Wood Elves,
which includes the other three Tournament Wild Card winners.

Excellent breakdown. But what is worse?
1. That Plorg put so much energy into it.
2. Not only did I read it, but I'll be back for the 2nd installment. |

Great stuff Plorg - love the picks.
And is it too early to say go-go PeteW? Extremely tough competition though, there are about 6 sides that I can't separate. Will be some great matches.

The Wood Elves
All of these teams score an average of over 3 TDs per game.
They all have a Treeman with Guard to sit right in the middle of the pitch and dish out some 3-dice blocks.
Two teams have a player that can run 13 squares and make a TD in one turn.
Every player (except the Treemen) can be a scoring threat.
Athel Loren Guardians
Grotty Little Tournament II Champions
Coach: Malthor
Sixteen players and all of them have Block, twelve with Dodge.
They are the highest TR/TS at an astronomical 479/344 and are
the second eldest team in the tournament with over 200 games.
They have an elfy +ST Thrower and Malthor knows a bit about how to play one of those players.
With all the SS and DT, opponents have to ask permission to do almost everything.
Compared to the other Wood Elf teams here, the Guardians have a mysteriously low number of +AG rolls.
There are no one-turners here. Odds are that they will be giving out 5 (five) handicaps in every game.
If the ST5 Wardancer niggles out (or uses up the apothecary) in the wrong game this team will go down hard.
It seems there might be younger elfy teams out there who might be capable and not give up 5 handicaps per game?
Ultimate Superheroes
FUMBBL Cup V Champions
Coach: PeteW
At press time PeteW is currently crippled with indecision over whether Iron Man II should take +AG or Block.
We must wait with bated breath for him to make up his mind whether a MB Tackle player needs Block now or later.
Ah the suspense! Note that if (Blockless) Mr Fantastic is maimed or killed without apothecary,
the team has a FUMBBL Cup Potion of Healing that can fix it after the game.
edit: Plorg has been informed that the Potion will not bring back the dead.
Deepwood Junkies
Warpstone Open I Finalists
Coach: FischerKing
- One MA4 Treeman
- Lowest TR/TS in the Tourney
The eldest in the tournament with over 400 games,
this team has played more games than most coaches have in their entire career.
Unfortunately, at the time of this writing there are still 2 MNG players out of 12 total with 70k in the bank.
The Junkies need to get a serious amount of recovery games in the next few days to stay competitive.
Urza's World
Coach: Pmg
- Eleven Blodgers
- One MA11 Sure Feet Catcher
- One MA10 Dauntless Catcher
This team hasn't won any Majors but you couldn't tell by looking at it.
Opposing teams will need plentiful Tackle to slow this team down.
They are young with only 27 games but the win ratio is very good so they should do well.
Next time we look at the three devious Dark Elf teams and a group of defiant Chaos Dwarves.

Thanks for all the votes so far! Nice of people to root for me.
For anyone who can't wait 4 hours until the draw (like me) - here are the teams and coaches by CR, so you can work out who might be paired versus whom.
I'd like to get 5 handis against Malthor first game. Game on! |

Actually, considering the 4 byes, there's alot of ways to seed the tournament.
Hmmmm....pure CR would put me against Fejd's orcs, pure TR or TS would put me against Topper's DE. |

It's seeded by CR which means that any of the top 8 will play any of the bottom 8. That is all we know. |
