15 games in with Grome's Gnomes, my Earth Elementals. 9-2-4. The inability to protect players is starting to get to us, having been handed our first losing streak.
Game 11: [SL] Clan Urduz, Clan Pestilens. We won the coin toss, elected to receive. Drive was going swimmingly, most of the best enemy players were out, the rest were mostly prone, when suddenly we forgot about Disturbing Presence, and tried to handoff into the cage. The ball bounced around a lot, there was a nasty scrum, and with a 4+ dodge and a half-die block, the enemy Thrower got the ball and started running downfield. We popped it loose, out of bounds, and it was thrown in right to an enemy player, who caught it. We got it loose from him, got all the Disturbing Presence clouds off of the ball, and with a little luck picked up a Turn 8 TD. The second half, we were doing pretty well, when suddenly the enemy Plague Censer Bearer opened a hole and one of those Plague Priests took a handoff and zipped in for a TD: it was a pretty good play. We set up for a quick score in the second half, but a double-skull prevented it. Good game! 1-1 tie. Record 7-2-2.
Game 12: [SL] Smecnops Ring, Gnome. This game was harder than the score indicated. These Gnomes had a ST4 Blitzer and a Hail Mary Bomber, and made great use of both. Also, one of their contraptions had a heyday with my Earth Elementals, killing one, injuring another, and BH'ing my Incarnate: in fact, we were out-Cas'ed, 5-4, the first time we'd taken more than two Casualties, or more than we'd inflicted. They won the coin toss and elected to kick. We got one Contraption out right away, and secured the ball deep in our half. We managed to make something of a cage, but a Hail Mary bomb KO'ed the carrier, and started a scrum. Largely due to Stand Firm, we were able to dedicate more resources to winning the scrum, and on turn 5 managed to get the ball away to the point where only the bomber could thwart our TD. He fumbled his bomb, and got stunned, so we walked it in. The second half was 8-on-8, and when they failed a dodge trying to cage up, we blitzed the carrier. He didn't go down, but he failed to dodge away the next turn, Badly Hurting himself. We scooped up the ball and ran it out of reach, but not having any linemen left we had to stall until turn 8 to keep from putting more fragile, developed players on the LOS. 2-0 win, record 8-2-2.
Game 13, [SL] Trapper's Association, Snakemen. Opponent won the coin toss, elected to kick. We lined up, they lined up, we got some of their men out, and the rest prone, and slipped Sylph Apsara downfield with the ball. They played some neat tricks with a successful 5+ Hypnotic Gaze, knocked Salamander Alpestris out, and got a zone on the ball, but we managed to keep it clean after a longish scrum. Even then, they got a guy on the ball again on turn 7 with some sneaky dodges, but we managed to blitz him off of it and walk it in. In the second half, they failed two pickups, and we got a bunch of men onto the ball. Grome got niggled on a 1d block. A big scrum ensued in their backfield, but since we had a bunch of Stand Firm we managed to stay on the ball, and with a little luck, Gnome Corundum scooped it and ran it in for a score in the closing seconds of the game. 2-0 win. Record 9-2-2.
Game 14, Half Bloods, Half Orc. We got out-gunned and out-maneuvered. We didn't have our Incarnate for this match, and we could have used his strength and reliability in the second half. We lost the coin toss and ended up kicking first. They set up a strong northbound drive, pinning down our Earth Elementals as much as possible, and taking out two of our four faster players (in fact, they killed Salamander Alpestris). With only two mobile players we simply weren't able to get in front of their cage, and they got a turn 6 TD. We didn't really have either the speed or the dice to score in three turns; we made an effort at it, but failed a critical GFI on turn 7. The second half was a fail-fest, as we turned over repeatedly, letting two Half-Orcs into our backfield. We managed to get the ball away and clear for a late TD pass to equalize, but the pass was fumbled and that was that. 0-1 loss, record 9-2-3.
Game 15, [SL] Boneo Hounds, Lybaras. Weird game. We received first, and drew a Blitz! They attacked the ball, but we got it safely caged up, thanks to Stand Firm. We couldn't get the ball out of bombing range, though, and a well-placed bomb stunned our carrier and left the defense in control of the ball. we made a scrum of it, but a Sepulchral Stalker got the ball and dodged away for a TD. We should have scored in turn 8, but I screwed up, opting for a 1d blitz rather than a 3+ skilled dodge, and skulled out. On their drive, we made it hard and they had to opt for a fast score, but this did give them a 2-0 lead and more or less iced the game, as it just takes this team too long to walk in a TD. We didn't manage a quick score, opting instead to skill up an Earth Elemental. 2-1 loss, record 9-2-4. It should be noted that this is the first time we've given up 2 TDs in one match. |

Haven't used animosity before, and was wondering how it works on the Pirate team.
I think it is:
- LD Slayer animosity kicks in wrt all teammates except another LD Slayer
- BA Corsair animosity kicks in wrt all teammates except another BA Corsair
- otherwise Pirates, Ogres, and the Captain can pass to anyone on the team including
LD Slayers and BA Corsairs without the animosity roll
Is this correct? |

A hardfought game which looked to go 2-0 up for the Ice Giants in the first half but an incredible streak of snakes gave Them Bones a chance to recover the ball to safety. Those pixies did gave Them Bones a hard time getting to the endzone. Those Giants will be contenders to watch. |

What happens when you combine one very excited RNG with a clan Moulder team? Well, mayhem would be one way to describe it...
Two turns in, five blocks down the line, three of the Northern Nippon players were in the casualty box. After that, things were a bit of an uphill struggle for Jokaero, who managed to come back quite nicely into the second half, but some lucky dodging from the break tackle Rat Ogres meant that Clan Moulder walked away with a victory.
One round to go. Who will keep the burly rats off the title? |
