CBBA All Stars - Season 1
Debby Demonbreeder – Sports Reporter for the Altdorf Daily

After a brilliant first season, the CBBA tonight named it's all star team. As usual, there were a few surprises - but every player in the team earned their spot. Surprisingly, the thrower position was the most debated leading up to the announcement, with a variety of opinions from experts.

Blitzers

Olaf "The Ox" Sichshlagenmann - Wolfenburg Bulls & Wolfgang Reinhart - RSU Scorpions

The accolades continue for the Ox after a stunning first season where he earned the MVP and lead his Wolfenburg Bulls to their first ever team award in the Red Ribbon Bowl. The second blitzer spot was hotly contested but went to Scorpion Star - Reinhart. Reinhard ended the season with an outstanding performance against the Gunners which put him in contention. He did struggle against the Griffins, despite hyping himself up. However, his displays of strength and surprising knack for finding the endzone at other times in the season have him tipped to be a breakout star next season.

Thrower

Gunoren Springthorn - ALU Great Eagles

Despite a bit of controversy, the CBBA settled on the thrower based on actual passing ability. There were a few other candidates that showed some versatility, but none can argue with the Throwers Award winner being selected based on his offensive prowess as part of the dynamic duo which worked so well for the Eagles this season.

Catchers

Engchalas Springblossom - ALU Great Eagles & Aethelredh Debenham - UOC Pride

Two human blitzers, 2 elven catchers. The catchers position had a lot of talent in contention, however, the accomplishments of Springblossom were hard to ignore. The Scorer's Award winner earned his spot on scoring potential alone. Debenham took the other spot, despite being known for moments of madness - Debenham is equally capable of pulling out miraculous maneuvers and was at one stage the leading casualty causer.

Linemen

Fox Newpelt - Mootland Fighting Cockerels & Ruben Kristiansen

Everyone's favorite All Stars are the linemen. They aren't quite so flashy, but boy do they put in work. Never has there been a bigger star in the Moot than Fox Newpelt who proved throughout the season that he can pass, he can score and he can hit! He sliced through the high elf opponents he faced, leading his team to 2 draws - an unprecedented achievement for the Fighting Cocks. Ruben was a piece of solidarity for the Bears throughout the season, supporting his teammates and taking responsibility for the ball. He scored the team's only touchdown in the CBBA Bowl, as well as 4 others throughout the season.

Out of interest UOC Pride will end up Lothern and the Northern All Stars will get the Hotchland Outlaws I presume?

Also, where does Bart "the Bulle" fit into the Team of the Year as a 'blocker'. Would he be competing wth Linemen, Blitzers, or both? Smile

"Well they should have never been allowed into the league in the first place, but the current crop of inbred aristocrats running the show have a real fetish for pointy eared gits. I was clearly the outstanding Thrower this season, despite the complete lack of support from these halfwits I have the displeasure to call team mates. Hightower was my only competition, but instead they give it to Springthorn? This sort of pandering and cronyism wouldn't be tolerated in Marienburg." - Anatol Flesner, overheard at a CBBA All Stars after party in Altdorf.

CBBA Preview – Pre Season Power Rankings and a Team By Team Breakdown

Debby Demonbreeder – Sports Reporter for the Altdorf Daily

Well we’re finally ready for kickoff. Season 2 of the CBBA after such a successful season 1. Once again we have our expert’s analysis and team by team breakdown for the power rankings.

1st – Royal Altdorf University Griffins

Number 1! Some are calling it the greatest season in the history of blood bowl - professional or amateur. They haven’t moved and probably won’t move from their position at the top of the power rankings. They are the CBBA Bowl winners after all. They fulfilled all of last season’s objectives and are expected to do it again.

Board Expectations

The Griffins always have high expectations. The Griffins will be expected to win the CBBA Bowl and finish in the top position at the end of the season. An undefeated season would be the only way to exceed these expectations. A secondary goal would be to defeat the Scorpions.

2nd – Reikland State Scorpions

The Scorpions get 2nd spot once again this season just based on past success. Although they struggled last season, the Scorpions rarely have 2 off seasons in a row. They can be forgiven for last season considering the pre-season drama and lack of preparation under coach Semitence.

Board Expectations

Like the Griffins, the Scorpions board has high expectations of their team. The Scorpions will be expected to make the bowl game. If they can win the title, that would be excellent. A victory over the Griffins would also be a great achievement.

3rd - Athel Loren Great Eagles

Things have become clearer since last season, the Great Eagles are the real deal. They probably would have won the Red Ribbon Bowl, except for injuries.

Board Expectations

Now that they have proven themselves, the Board expects them to maintain this momentum. They are expected to finish at the top of the Southern Borders conference and score at least 2 td’s per game.

4th – Nuln City Gunners

Last season was disappointing, however, by the end of the season a few potential stars started to emerge. They have a tough task against the other Imperial big guns but are expected to compete nonetheless.

Board Expectations

The board expects Daudy to keep the Gunners in the title hunt for the entire season and finish in the top 2 of the conference. The Fans will be hoping to see the Gunners defeat a team from Altdorf, as is always their first wish coming into a season. Making the bowl game would be seen as an excellent result.

5th – Ulthuan State Phoenix

The Phoenix may in fact not be the best non-imperial team with the emergence of ALU. They will be out this season to prove otherwise.

Board Expectations

Tyra_Nid let the board down last season finishing below the Eagles and out of the Bowl picture. People are wondering whether they can compete with the big Imperial teams – which is displeasing to the entire Phoenix organisation. The board expects the Phoenix to make a bowl game – its that simple. A victory over an Imperial power would also be pleasing.

6th – Talebeim Panthers

The Panthers are at the same spot they were last season – rated 6th. Overall it was a great season for Panther’s fans with a strong showing in both portions of the season, let down by the forfeit to the Griffins which is shrouded in scandal. The trouble will come with the inter-conference games at the end of the season, where they are likely to struggle as a definite 4th in the big 4 once again.

Board Expectations

Talebheim University will be expecting Balle2000 to capitalise on the touring portion at the start of the season and will want to finish with at least 2 wins from the first 3 games. The board would be happy with a draw against any of the top 3 but would be ecstatic with a victory to please the fans.

7th – Wolfenburg Bulls

Well so much for not being in the title hunt – the Red Ribbon Bowl winners have climbed the rankings to be rated the highest ever coming into a season. If the Ox and Bulle can survive there is no reason they can’t make another Bowl game.

Board Expectations

Here is a perfect example of a good coach changing the expectations of the board. The Bulls’ board have been enlightened to the possibility of success. Of course, they will be expecting a positive casualty differential but the board are excited to see the Bulls compete for a top 2 spot in their conference and would be ecstatic with a bowl game.

8th – Urslo University Bears

Despite the lack of funding, the Bears put together a magical season to finish with the 2nd best record of the season. Many of the same names are there, the question is whether or not it was a lucky run – or is this a golden crop of rare talent up north?

Board Expectations

The Bears are aware that their lack of resources makes it hard for them to compete with other, more fortunate schools. Still, the Bears would like to see the team continue with their momentum if possible. Management are cautious and are taking the pressure off – all they want is a victory against the Buccs, anything else is a bonus.

9th – Averheim University Stallions

Consistent again without being excellent. The Stallions had a strong team in the eyes of Averheim folk. They were hurt last season by the surprising emergence of a few of the usually lower rated teams. With a change in teams within the conference, this season could be their shot.

Board Expectations

First and foremost, the Stallions must maintain their proud history of not finishing a season with a losing record. DrPoods simply must win more than he loses. Being the highest ranked team in their conference, the Stallions should make a bowl game this season, which would be considered a huge success.

10th – Middenheim City College Harlequins

It was a great season for the Harlequins, but it's hard to rate them higher than 10th. Despite it being a strong one for the Harlequins, where they were unlucky to miss out on a Bowl game and were the only team to beat the Griffins - the Harlequins suffered a raft of injuries in the games they lost. That said, they have a few useful players who put in strong performances last season. If they can get through without too many injuries - the sky is the limit for the MCC. Unfortunately, a more likely situation will see the Harlequins show glimpses of brilliance from developing stars before being crushed by injuries.

Board Expectations

The MCC have become used to disappointing results season after season. They will still expect the team to finish above last position. If the team can enjoy a good run without injuries, Mathfuric will be expected to capitalise on this and finish around the middle of the table. If the team can defeat a serious title contender at some stage of the season, that would be a strong result.

11th – FCU Crusaders
Despite their superior facilities and susbstantial funding, history repeated itself for the Crusaders last season. Furthermore, coach Dunenzed looked at times to be beyond his depth dealing with the difficult personalities of his team. Unfortunately, a lot of that team is still in place for next season - despite a few cuts. Can they come together and play as a team? The experts don't think so.

Board Expectations

Their coaches constantly disappoint the FCU board, Dunenzed didn't look like turning around the free city's fortunes. The FCU will be expecting to finish in the title hunt and would like a top 4 spot and a bowl game. However, the team’s ultimate goal will be defeat all other Imperial opponents they encounter during the touring leg of the season. Although an unlikely achievement if they take on a school from Altdorf or Nuln, it would make the season one to remember in the Free City.

12th – University of Chrace Pride
The UOC's positon at 12th shows where the elves sit these days in people's thoughts. The Pride only managed a draw against the Cockerels. A few of their players showed glimpses of brilliance, but that usually coincided with derpery. The Pride are likely to struggle against the well resourced schools of the Empire and we know they will struggle against the Phoenix. No longer are they expected to blow out the lesser teams, so where does that leave them? Ranked 12 and that's being optimistic.

Board Expectations

The primary objective for the season will be to defeat the Dragons and finish above them on the table. The board would also like to see their team finish ranked in the top half of the league at the end of the season. In the unlikely event they finish above the Phoenix, all of Chrace will be ecstatic.

13th – Caledor Great Dragons
The only team to dissapoint more than the Pride last season was the Great Dragons, much to the despair of their fans. They suffered with early injuries and rarely looked competitive. Still, things should improve for the dragons, given their history.

Board Expectations

As always the number one goal for the Great Dragons will be to defeat the Pride. A suitable goal for the season will also be to force an upset against a higher ranked opponent, to show that Caledor can compete with the best. An exceptional season would see the Great Dragons finish above the two other High Elf teams.

14th – Norscan Peninsula Buccaneers

Even though the NPU is capable of putting together a team that can challenge for the CBBA bowl, they can just as easily disappoint. This was the case last season. With a new look conference in the North, you could argue the Buccaneers should be optimistic. However, the Bears and Bulls are hot - making the Great Northern conference perhaps the most interesting of the lot.

Board Expectations

The Buccaneers’ board would like to see the team finish with a positive record and within the top 2 highest ranked schools from their conference. A victory over the Bears to prove Norscan superiority would be a fantastic result after last season.

15th – Guisorex Chevaliers

The Chevaliers are one of the new kids on the block. Little is known about their ability, having never played an Imperial opponent, but rumour has it they have put a lot of resources into their athletic program to make a mark in the CBBA.

Board Expectations

The Chevalier's coach has a lot of weight on his shoulders. Despite being a rather unknown quantity, the board want the Chevaliers to compete with pride and finish in a competitive position. Games against Imperial opponents are to be taken seriously and the Chevalier's cannot be blown out. They must not finish last in their conference, that would be too embarrassing after all the resources they have committed.

16th – Tor Anroc Unicorns

The poorest of the elven Universities, it would take a tremendous effort to finish at the top of their conference - one which is losing respect from the experts. The Unicorns played fairly last season (ignoring the draw with the Cockerels) considering their rushed preparation. That is enough to make us believe they won't lose every game.

Board Expectations

The Unicorns board understands their position. They expect coach Chavo not to be beaten by more than 3 touchdowns against their elven rivals. If one of their throwers can earn an end of season award - that would be an excellent result worthy of celebration. If they can upset a Lothern rival, that would be exceptional.

17th – BVU Anvils

The Anvils have nothing to lose coming into the CBBA. Unlike some of the other universities, the Anvils do benefit from the experience of playing schools from the Empire, albeit in friendly matches. They will struggle with the speed of the elves, but should be able to hand out some punishment and maybe push for some late game wins. Its likely they’ll end up in the bottom third of the table somewhere when its all said and done.

Board Expectations

The school will just want to see where it sits amongst the others. One thing that they will be looking to avoid however - is getting embarrassed by finishing last or letting an elf team beat them by more than 3 touchdowns. Finishing at the top half of the rankings would be very exciting for Anvils fans.

18th – Erengrad Yhettis

The Kislevites have an unusual play style, which makes it hard to predict where they will land. They are lucky to be in what is considered one of the weaker conferences, which means they could surprise a few people by the end of the season. Still, its hard to see them being truly impressive until they find their feet.

Board Expectations

The Yhetti's board are hyping up the clash with the MCC in what is being called the Battle of the Great North Road. The Touring Leg will be seen as practice to build up to this clash the Yhettis are hoping will be a major drawcard and potential fund raiser. A victory in this game would be very pleasing, but mostly the board just wants the team to build for the season with a look at a run in the next.

19th – Hotchland Outlaws

Hotchland's entry into the CBBA seems half-assed. They're trying to feed off the Bulls success - but surely they don't believe they actually belong in the CBBA. Like the Yhetti's - the Outlaws entire season rests on a single objective - defeating the Bulls. Unfortunately, with the lack of funds and experience in the CBBA its hard to see them succeeding at much at all, even with their "northern blood".

Board Expectations

The Outlaws board want to beat their big brothers and rival town bullies - the Wolfenburg Bulls. Unfortunately, this is looking like a hard task based on last season. Beyond that, the fans just want to see the team get some points at some stage to prove they might be able to do it, even if its through a draw. A winless season could see the Outlaws retired as quickly as they sprouted up, especially if crowd numbers don't generate any revenue.

20th – Mootland Fighting Cockerels

As to be expected, the Fighting Cocks are last in the power rankings again. No one expects to see any level of competition out of the little fellas, not even the fans. Either way, there will be plenty of parties in the Moot as they cheer on their team. Last season they got 2 draws, their best ever showing, still it's the same old story.

Board Expectations

None. Seriously. The board would like to see their team score another touchdown, but if that can’t be managed, they understand. If the team can manage another draw this season, expect things to get really crazy!

Scandal has hit Urslo again with the coach hiring a player who wasn't elibable for the CBBA. Rumour has he stole the 90k it cost to hire him and disappeared into the sunset. This is the second financial scandal as early last season the commissioner demanded a 70k fee from Urslo, which they learnt later no one else had to pay. They are now a player short for their first game.

Ps. A suggestion that is probably too late. Since people were lookig for a better tiebreaking system, perhaps the legs could consist of 5 sides (4g groups) to make it an 8 game season, which would reduce the likelihood of needing a tiebreaker.

Averheim is looking to "Strongman Keppel" and "The Three Generals" that form our blitzer corps to improve on last season. The experts think "also rans" do they? Hmmm... We shall see.

The Hochland Outlaws issued a press release late this morning after the Altdorf Daily released their pre-season form guide. It appeared to be a picture of a person's posterior with the word "Outlaws" crudely scribbled across it.

The school board through recently hired coach Gregg "Pop" Poppenschwarz fronted the media shortly thereafter stating that the release was merely a harmless student prank and that the team was being assembled and tryouts were going well with team selection expected soon. The smirk on Pop's face indicated that the prank may have in fact been the doings of the coach and expected quarterback Alistair Ludenhof, son of the Elector Count and long time minor league player who had recently returned to college in order to complete a degree in "Brewing and Tasting", a course which had only recently begun at the college and was the first of its kind offered at old world colleges.

The local journalists in the room sniggered when Pop drew the attention that the Altdorf press hadn't even spelled the school's name correctly when asked about the accuracy of their prediction for the Outlaw's season and said that he was assembling a team that would be ready to take on the schools in their division.

As he left Pop mocked the well known bull horns sign shown by fans of the Wolfenburg team by making the sign with the incorrect fingers. The hometown media erupted in hysterics while the major state media were left without answers about the state of construction of the home field, possible lineup or further pertinent details ahead of the season opener.

UOC Dean Robert GreatHawke leaned back into the soft leather of his chair, savouring the pleasure that can only come from knowing his hometown team had done him proud. The sounds of revelry could be heard from outside in the University grounds as students and faculty alike enjoyed a rare break from the pressures of academic life. 'Giving them a day to celebrate was a grand idea' he thought to himself. 'They'll be cheering me almost as much for this as they did for my 3 touchdowns against the Dragons back in '74!'

His reverie was broken as an aide burst into his room bearing a bundle of cheap paper - a copy of the Altdorf Daily. "Sire! The pre-season power rankings have been released!" the aide spluttered, clearly displeased at being the messenger.
"Splendid!" said the Dean. "Surely our good friend Debby will have finally acknowledged our supremacy over those upstarts from Ulthuan State. I mean, we finished 3 places above them in last seasons standings. We've never done better!"
"You...you'd better just take a look sir." The aide dropped the paper down on Dean GreatHawke's desk and then fairly fled the room...

The Dean looked up at the aides hasty retreat with a frown, then picked up the copy of the 'Daily'.
'Let's see then.. We were ranked 8th to start, then finished 6th last season... So... Griffins first, of course... Great Eagles, yes yes they did well... we still beat 'em... Phoenix in 5th, right... Panthers in 6th?! Well there are more teams... Bulls, Bears, Stallio... WHAT?!' This last was shouted in disbelief. "Phoenix in 5th!?! We rank lower than LAST SEASON! We flogged those pamby toffs from Ulthuan State and they're still ranked 5th!! Where the bloody hell are the Pride?"
Increasingly furious turning of pages ensued until the Dean found the Pride in 12th position.
"This is an OUTRAGE!" His hand reached blindly for the bellpull, which he yanked clear from its moorings once found. An aide stuck his head around the door, only to cop the rolled up Daily in the face.
"Fetch me the Coach, the captain, and a reporter! This insult won't stand! We finished higher than the Phoenix, the Stallions, even the Scorpions, and they ALL rank higher than us? Because of a DRAW against cheating, filthy halflings from the MOOT?! They can't even play the damn game right!"

As a flustered Coach Luo and a quizzical Lief Barrats-Curry were chivvied into the room, the Dean whirled on them, the fire of High Elven heroes burning in his eyes. "You're putting me on the team, Coach! I might not be the elf I once was back in '74, but I can still stick it to these human upstarts! I'll show that bloody reporter where the Pride should rank. 12th?! The bloody cheek!"
Coach Luo, flustered and meek, look back and forth between the Dean and his team's Captain, who merely raised an eyebrow at the outburst. "Oh, well, umm... '74 you say? Which century was that, exactly..?" Luo asked absentmindedly.
"Never mind that, you daft bugger! Someone fetch my old uniform! First thing tomorrow morning, I'm training with the team, and I expect to be playing with these young champions come Round One! See to it!"
With a disdainful flick of his wrist, he dismissed the leaders of the UOC bloodbowl program.

The continued sounds of celebration filtered into Dean GreatHawke's office once more, but this time it set a fire in his belly - one that would only be quenched by a draft from the CBBA Bowl Cup itself...

CBBA Season 2 Rules Review

Please read this post fully and carefully - not reading this post is not an excuse, not abiding by the rules will have implications

After a review of last season and the rules, there will be no significant rule changes. However, there are a few minor considerations that need to be made going into our second season.

We are monitoring the tiebreaker system, which will stay as follows for now:

1. Strength of Schedule

2. TD Diff

3. TD For

4. Cas Diff

5. Cas For

6. Head to Head

With the change to 5 conferences, the bowl games will be:

CBBA Bowl: 1 vs 2 overall

Red Ribbon Bowl: 3 vs 4 overall

Overall is calculated based on points scored, with the tiebreakers as above.

This means one conference will be the dunce conference and won't be represented in the Bowl - oh the shame! Never has a strong touring leg being more important if you're in a tough conference.

All players who play their first game this season need to have the following added to their bio:

Player Debut - Season 2

This is to keep track of their career length, which as you know is 3 seasons in CBBA. Smart coaches will be strategising - while new teams might have to endure a bit of pain for some gain when the existing ones have to clean out at the end of season 3.

All players who won an award or got in the all star team must have this noted in their bio. For example, one players bio might be:

Player Debut - Season 1

All Star Season 1

Passer Award Season 1

In the future we will be looking to rename the awards - probably based on players who make outstanding achievements, so that's something to shoot for.

We are also going to create a special player achievement for anyone who makes 3 All Star appearances in their career.

I'm thinking of a system where if a star player suffers a permanent injury that ends their career (ie. they are retired) they will be added to the team as an assistant coach. I'm not quite sure how this will work or what will constitute a star player at the moment, it is just a thought.

The participation of the coaches in season 1 exceeded expectations and has created a very enjoyable environment. Thankyou.

The CBBA reserves the right to establish or modify rules at any time to stop any power gaming or abuse of the systems that are in place.

Do I just make a team the regular way but only hire 7 players and a bunch of cheerleaders?
