Welcome to the Season X installment of the NWFL Weekly! I will be using this forum thread to provide game recaps, standings analysis, and whatever else I feel is worthy of sharing with the League as a whole. You are all more than welcome to chime in with whatever you might want to say, as well, but I would ask that trash talk be kept to a minimum, in order to keep the signal-to-noise ratio reasonable. Please feel free to contribute, and subscribe to the thread to be informed whenever it updates.

The Weekly may be less voluminous than it has been in previous years - I have recently started a new contract at work, and the location shift has removed my ability to spec from work. I am not sure exactly how that will shake out going forward, but if anyone is looking to step up their game as far as reporting goes, I certainly wouldn't say no.

In the meantime, I would like to recognize milestones that were reached during the first Preseason games - two new Legends in the NWFL.

Martin "The Engine" Wallace has been the Essen Exsanguinator's swing player for a while now. Despite having +ST, Mighty Blow, and Tackle, his teammate Uwe "The Reaper" Rosenberg has been the go-to for beatings, due to Pro adding reliability. Martin has now corrected that deficiency, taking Pro on a normal skill roll to complete the set among the Exsanguinator vamps. Martin is actually the third Legend on Essen, behing Uwe and Stefan "Eyes of Gold" Feld, and it will be interesting to see how his new skill and Feld's recent injury (dropping him back to AG4) will affect Essen's tactics.

The other newly minted Legend is Mr Boddy, the default ball-handler for the back-to-back NWFL champion Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers. Mr Boddy scored four of Winchester's five TDs in the playoffs, then added two more in the first game of the Preseason to level up. +AG on his final skill roll makes him more reliable in his chosen specialty. Will he be able to lead Winchester to a three-peat?

Once again it has been a brutal preseason for the Necropolis Priest Kings. Last season saw 4 deaths and one injury retirement (280 SPPs total!) with three key players being permanently interred. This preseason had 3 dead (all Tomb Guardians) one injury retirement and two more with permanent injuries that are holding on to keep the team going. Despite a slightly better showing this preseason, people are starting to wonder if the Priest Kings will be able to continue as a functional team throughout this season as well as into the next...

Give it up for the New York Rats. They finished 8th, but led the preseason in TDs scored (8) and Casualties against (18)!

At this rate we'll eventually score infinite touchdowns with zero players!

Dallas Reptiles 1 Buenos Aires Titans 1 (season X pre-season game)

https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=3604035

What a cracking game this was, full of action, suspense and surprises!

Coach Hayati expected to be thumped in this one against his opponent's vastly superior team- and they being Wood Elves, even more so! Going into the game the plan for Dallas was to put in a good showing and hopefully gain some SPP.

The game was to turn out differently however...

In the first half some surprisingly poor football skill lapses (dodging and ball-handling) led to the receiving Titans being put under a huge amount of pressure in their own backfield. From here, Dallas managed to turn over the football deep into Titans territory- and from there one more skill lapse on a dodge was all they needed to secure the first touchdown!

In the second half things got even more interesting. Dallas received with superior numbers and the game looked to be slipping away from the Titans. However, a genius play by coach Garcangel led to the ball carrier being surfed and the football tossed back into the center field! Despite the elaborate maneuver costing coach Garcangel two players who were surfed in retaliation, the Titans were able to make another genius play, chain-blocking to set the football free from a large melee and taking it home for the touchdown!

Things were still not done though! A bad kick left the football in the hands of a Saurus who powered down-field and had a chance to score an unlikely winner for Dallas. However, solid defending by coach Garcangel led to coach Hayati burning his remaining re-rolls, as a result of which Dallas failed to collect the football at the death.

The final score, 1-1! We eagerly await the rematch between these two!

Dallas Reptiles 1 Charleston Sharks 1

https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=3605231

Both coaches got their NWFL seasons off to a solid start in this cracking match. A draw seemed the fair result given the efforts extended by both coaches, who each had a chance to win the game 2-1.

In the first half a Perfect D had coach MrNomad on this toes and under pressure, however he remained calm and collected and impressively scored with Throg. Following this, coach Hayati had a chance for a late score but this was not realized due to the need to pass with a Stunty in sunny weather!

In the second half coach Hayati was under severe pressure from coach MrNomad's team until a mistake from Glug set the Reptiles free for the equalizer. At the end of the game the Reptiles stole the football after kicking deep into Sharks territory, but the Sharks were able to regain control of the football, just failing on an endzone pass that would have secured the victory for them.

Both coaches should be pleased with their performances and have much to look forward to this season!

B.Aires Tangueros vs. Buenos Aires Titans 2-1

B.Aires Tangueros vs. Mackville, WI Pro Bowlers 0-2

During the first match of the season, Nuffle smiled on the Tanguero's pacters for the city derby: light casualties ensued, bold moves worked and three players skilled up. "I can't believe you beat me with such reckless playstyle", hissed the Titan's coach. He was right, knew the Tangueros supporters, while they returned home merryly singing La cumparsita.

Having done that against a team with tons of blodgers, the Tangueros entered the fray against Pro Bowlers full of confidence: another elven team, with less armour, less blodge... And next-to-nothing worked out. They rarely break an armour roll and when they managed to, they only got stuns or knock outs. "That skaven was the bane of my team!", declared to the press the wining coach. Across the hall, his defeated colleague mumbled "so much of a bane, we still lost". Tough probably if it weren't for the skaven's timely interventions, the elves'd have scored even more touchdowns.

Ahead yet anoooother elven team: Saphery Poets. They might not be as developed as the previous opponents, but they have a talented coach that knows how to use his inducements and has experience well beyond the pacter coach.

Tangueros' will need a intense training program to deal with them. But then, tango is poetry in movement. We will see who stays on the pista dancing longer.

Do not mistake "more matchs played" with "and learned a ton out of them". You play better, make more sensible decisions in-game and know your way around your team. I depend mostly on big guys doing their work and being able to take a few of your guys out early on. Will try, nonetheless Wink

Dallas Reptiles 0 Butte Kickers 1

https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=3606986

This was a cracking game between the league's heaviest hitters and the stubborn Reptiles...in the end Butte Kickers emerged the deserved 1-0 winners, though there were many ups and downs during the match.

In the first half the Kickers were able to smash their way down-field for a relatively comfortable score- even though there were some minor hiccups such as unlikely Sauri dodging out and knocking down the rushing ball carrier! At the very end of the half the Reptiles had an outside chance for a score- the ball carrier did the hard work in avoiding the tacklers, but in the end was tackled by a resolute player with no specialist skill in tackling.

In the second half the Reptiles tried to hold a loose formation and move laterally to confuse coach OTS- who responded by tying up the line players with overloads, forcing coach Hayati to make a decision. This he did, opting for the right sideline- which coach OTS promptly shut down! Next the Reptiles were forced to redeploy their skink cage in the center, but the football carrier fell on a critical dodge and injured himself before they could do so! From there the game became quite the melee with coach OTS eventually emerging with the football. However, he was just short of being able to score again for a convincing 2-0 victory.

Throughout the match the Reptiles held up well against the onslaught of armor-breaking blocks and blitzes, but there were casualties- Ed “Two Tails” Jones was seriously injured with -1MA and Roger "the Dodger" Staubach was killed. Still, coach Hayati feels that the Reptiles got out of this game quite lightly, all things considered!

It was noted that Butte Kickers have only one specialist ball carrier, Larson the Claw, since the other was lost in their last match- coach Hayati thinks that he needs to be eliminated to stop this team!

Dallas Reptiles 1 White Rock Midnight 3

Coach Hayati had a "strategy" in this game- to use Helmut Wulf and his chainsaw to wreak maximum havoc and reduce White Rock Midnight to a manageable number of players for later on (he learned of this possibility from a recent loss against Goblins, where the chainsaw had been absolutely prolific). Unfortunately, on the very first action of the match, Helmut managed to break his ribs with his own chainsaw, leading to an immediate turnover and easy defensive score for coach licker! Not a great start for Dallas!

Dallas of course failed to score on their short drive following the score to take us to half time- but in the second half, good use of their Wizard allowed Dallas to squeeze in a very unlikely score to level the game at 1-1 after coach licker's team failed to push the pigskin out of bounds- and Bob "Bobbie" Hayes then recovered a very crowded football!

Next up, Dallas had an outside chance to knock down the Midnight ball carrier on the goal line, but he stayed up and was well pushed via a chain block for the inevitable 2-1 lead.

At this point Dallas went for broke and tried to score, knowing that failure would condemn them to a likely 3-1 defeat. And so it proved- a Diving Tackle proved their undoing and from there the highly skilled Dark Elves were able to show their superiority with yet another touchdown.

Dallas got a couple of skills out of the game, which was good. However, as coach Hayati noted, "We'd need about another 200 skills to compete against this team of super stars!" Maybe after another 200 games...
