My favourites are Philip K. Dick, and Stanislaw Lem, but there are a lot more: Tolkien, Pratchett, ...

Harry Harrison (Stainless Stell Rat, anyone?) and Michael A. Stackpole, both big names in light entertainment science-fiction novels.

Steven Erikson is an excellent fantasy writer - I highly recommend people track down his Malazan Book of the Fallen series if you're looking for a good read. From the number of team themes I see along these lines, he's definitely becoming more popular as well.

Fiest
McCaffery
Kate Elliott
but without doubt the best of the best : Orsen Scott Card, he is Awesome.

Pratchet and R.Jorden started of well but suck more than a Troll thrower these days... Should have given up while you had some respect left guys.

John Irving has written some great books (admitedly I've only read Hotel New Hampshire and Cider House Rules)
I'm currently reading some books by Philip Roth which really manages to dig out awsome depth in his books.
Frank Herbert's dune was a fantastically written book as well but the follow ups prety much sucked sand...

There's a lot of other out there but I just have to say:

Tolkien really is an awful writer... Don't get me wrong - the universe in which the books take place is fantastic and the impact he had was enourmous. The story line is good as well. But as an author Tolkien really isn't worth the paper the Fellowship of the Ring is written on...

mark...z...danielewski....

i'm a very avid stephen king fan, own most of his works, save for some of the very early stuff, and while some of his works scared the holy bajeezus out of me...no writer, other than mr danielewski has ever given me a panic attack from his writing....house of leaves...i recommend it...to everyone....such an incredible work of art...and believe me it's more than just a story...go find it at a bookstore and you'll see why....*incredible*

Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett is probably my favorite book. Another book I liked was the Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. But they're both non-fiction so I'm not sure if it counts.
