“Hoo boy.
First, I'd like to thank my opponent, gildor. He was gracious and sporting, and despite each of us having personal issues come up forcing us to reschedule a number of times, we conquered filthy time zones and made it happen!
I came in thinking despite the races involved, that I would be able to keep up my end of the bash at this TR. This ended up being true, in terms of numbers, but the timing didn't favor me. The game started with me kicking, and him getting the ref (10ff per side). First turn rip foul failed his apo. In response, I rip fouled his dp on my first turn... apo succeeds. That's bad. I tried to hang in there, but ko's started piling up, and I wasn't able to put guys down, much less get in position to foul 'em. I made a half-decent effort at the end of the half, but he still managed a pretty easy td.
We both laughed at the t8 'blitz' rolled on the kickoff table for him... he had nobody in range to do anything, and I was feeling good that the majority of my ko's came back... So of course he rolled blitz on the opening kick of the 2nd half as well, which put me in a real bind. I futzed around and got the ball and my catcher free, and made a mad dash to the end zone. 8v8, with my half of the pitch flooded with chaos, it seemed like leaving it up to blodge was my best odds of a tying score. No good. He didn't need a rr to pow my catcher, who was ko'd on the play.
The throw-in was miraculously caught by a blitzer in traffic, so I did my best to free him, but the ko's were stacking up once again, and I didn't have any hope of screening, much less caging. He eventually snagged the ball and ran away with it, leaving my 4 remaining players in the dust. A late niggle on a throwaway block made me feel a bit better, but feelings don't win matches ;)
All in all, a good match. I'm disappointed with the result, of course, but I'm pleased I at least drew a good coach for my first tourney game, and we didn't have any client issues, or scheduling problems that couldn't be worked out before the round 1 deadline.
