Black Cup VIII: round 1

Black Box Revelation redefined the concept of a Pyrrhic victory.

Three treemen, a wizard and a bunch of fouling halflings caused more havoc than expected among the elven lines. Lack of rerolls due to the chef added another level of complexity, especially in the second half, when the one and only reroll was spent in the first turn after double skulls. Luckily the halflings went down very easily as well, including starplayer Puggy Baconbreath who kicked himself out of the game after a failed dodge.

By turn 5 in the second half I thought it was over. But then an opportunity arose and even though we only had two players left, a wardancer managed to leap through the defense and have a 1d shot at the ball. The carrier went down. Next turn a failed GFI for the final score failed, taking the game to overtime.

We won the toss, but only had 4 players left. The halflings also had only 5, including 3 treemen. Even though I lost two more players, I managed to run past the trees and scored the winning touchdown.

Next round I'll face chaos dwarfs or nurgle. I have 4 players and 7 journeymen...

As usually when I can't decide what team I want to join with, if any, I sign up some stunty team. I don't expect that get passed the first game, but it happens. Usually I end up against some dwarf or chaos in the first round of any BB major, so to my surprise I was up against Wood Elf. At least against dwarves I can keep up with them, but against elves, my tiny stunty legs will have a hard time. To boot, 2 stuntykilled wardancers was worrying me.

Choosing inducements was easy. If I had to chose again (knowing how it went), I'd only drop the babe for a magic card or something.
I started receiving, and Puggy ran right up to an elf a cut it down. A few turn later Puggy bought it, but I had my 3 tree cage, ,and was walking slowly towards the end zone. As more and more halflings left the field, and the first half wasn't even half over, I thought "screw it", it's much more defense. I tossed the ballcarrier, and he ran happily in the first TD.

Now that I was on defense, I could concentrate on the only thing that would help me.. injurying elves. It went above all expectations. I injured elves left and right, and not even one halfling was sent off. I couldn't stop them scoring in the first half, but in the second half, I started with a fireball, taking out their ballcarrier (thrower) and a second elf. I surrounded the ball as one does. And stuck around. My opponent had only 1 RR in the second half, thanks to my chef, and he blew that in the first turn. This meant that everything he did was risky, and it paid off.

Alas I became too hubris, and didn't protect my ballcarrier. One of the elves last players (a wardancer), managed a 1db block against him, which evened out the field. I had one chance left, and all the RR I could've wished for. Of course it had to be the GFI to get to the endzone that failed... twice.

In overtime. My opponent received the ball, so it was quite hopeless. But I continued my tactic, and got most of the elves of the pitch. But I my legs were short, and the elves were fast.

bram won deservedly, but I had had fun, which is the most important. I believe that several of the spectators also were amused.
