Season’s Climax

It’s summertime, and boy do we have a treat for you! The SCRIBBL Climax tourney will be in full swing next year, and the qualifiers will decide the first ten participants in the most exciting tourney of the CIBBL system! Well, aside from the Autumn crunch-time divisions, but you get the idea. While the selection process for the remaining ten is still shrouded in mystery, and Bilfrindal won’t let me look through his notes, that cranky old gnome (an n.d.r. would be good here), there is no doubt that this is a golden opportunity for many teams to get into this prestigious competition.
So today we’re going to take a look at the team in each qualifier, and see which teams are looking forward to summer and who is instead sweating just by looking at the board. I’ve divided each tourney in three brackets, rather than making a ranking because the talent level is fairly balanced across the board: the Competitors, which would be very disappointed if they aren’t close to the top at the end of Summer; the Hopefuls, which are looking to give the top of the tourney a hard time while being maybe less consistent than the competition; and the Dark Horses, which might need some things to go right to be a factor for the qualification but can’t be dismissed right on.
Qualifier I: Death’s Row
Qualifier I contains some of the most dangerous, exciting and somehow less storied teams of the upper echelon of CIBBL. The teams are a fine selection of the most brutal bashers and flashiest ballers, with many marquee matchups highlighting a primetime-worth collection of players.
The Competitors
Way of the Dragon
Making their mark on the Sylvania division at long last, the Way of the Dragon look to carry over their positive momentum on to Spring, and, after years of toiling in the shadow of Carol I, Draco Dracovich is now arguably the biggest star in the league. The Blood Dragons have traditionally been slow burners, usually faltering through spring before turning into machines when autumn comes. If they are so competitive this early and they confirm the trend, who can stand in their way?
The year so far
4-1-0, 1st place in the Sylvania regionals with solid wins over the Tower of the Necromancer and on Strigos Elită in Carol I’s farewell game.
What’s hot
The Way has clearly the best 1-2 punch in the league. Draco Dracovich is an elite sacker with extremely high mobility and a passion for the opponent’s blood, averaging 1 casualty a game in his 38 games career – so no presentation needed! While less comfortable under the spotlight, though, Igor Igorivich is even more of a threat. This vampire is a scoring machine, but he’s shown he can also pass (11 completions is no joke) and can open most cages for a blitz with his highly efficient hypnogaze. These two players are not only all-time CIBBL greats – they are phenomenal together, as they complement each other so well on both offense and defence.
What’s not
The third member of the vampire trio has always been kind of a sore point for the WoD. That place is currently occupied by Dracul Draculesti, which is a very green prospect and will need time to develop, especially with Draco and Igor hogging the limelight. The two stars have been relatively durable, neither of them missing more than 2 games in their career. But should one fall, it’s hard to see Dracul stepping in immediately, and that might hurt their chances of qualification, especially in a close-contested qualifier.
Player to watch
With Dracul struggling to put up numbers, the Way needs the supporting cast to step in. The hitting game is already a strong point of the Blood Dragons, but the team can count on agile lineman Oda to give that extra oomph to the offence and be an unexpected scoring threat for the opponent, an option that coach Nextflux will use with increasing frequency.
Key stat
145 – Rush paces of Igor Igorivich this Spring. Only one other player on the team has more than 10 rush paces on the team, the thrall Oda, most of them after catching a pass from the vampire.
