Dukes of Earthquake Valley
The Dukes had been in real trouble two years ago.
The seven-day-old pair of pants I hadn't able to wash were a reminder of my long journey to reach this spot; the eternal waiting for my coach from a fissure in the ground and a collapsed hill. I hadn't expected, after such a long journey, to arrive in a valley in Ulthuan such as this. The halo of destruction around the valley was offset by the optimism of the elves and other locals busy taking away the debris and trying to rebuild. Can they really be using this valley to give them an advantage during home matches? I knew that there was supposedly an opulent stadium, but upon seeing it I discover it is far from opulent.
My horse coach stopped near a medium azure building, finely decorated with gold inlays and ivory sculptures, situated in the centre of the town. Sheimel Intandon was at the door, waiting.
BL: What a warm welcome! Are you Sheimel?
SI: Who exactly are you? Doesn't seem that you're carrying the astrogranite and mammoth fangs I requested from Tilea.
BL:: I'm Ms. Bradrid Largegranite, of the SCRIBBL, we have an interview. Sampittu told me the exact place of his team. Are you free to begin?
SI: Well I don't have much time at the moment but I'm okay for a couple of lightning fast questions.
Sheimel leads me into his office. It is lit by a hundread candles and full of hunt trophies, golden trophies and ivory snake sculpts. In the center of the room there is a pedestal with an azure broken espalier and a golden incision with a date.
BL:: That doesn't seem a conventional piece of furniture?
SI: You better keep your hands off of that.
BL:: What exactly is it?
SI: What remains of my team, after THAT night, no one was ever prepared for it. I'm really not in the mood to talk about this and besides, it shows weaknesses to opposition. If it was your last question...
BL: Okay, no mention of this. I'd like you to just talk about the upcoming SCRIBBL Climax qualifiers. What are your expectations?
SI: Well, we've trained a lot, but we don't have to prove we're better than the boneheading and creeping opposition in our group, if we can call it like that. You can argue we had a really harsh regional season after the Clay Medal but it was just... you know... training.
BL: The first match against the muscled ogres wasn't that good mister Intadon
SI: It's only the first game, we are acclimating, and will never congratulate the empty muscular heads...or in general any players use their feet not exclusively on the ball, what roughness, are we a serious league?
BL: Why so many different races in this sunny place of Ulthuan?
SI: They simply come from neighbouring regions, some tribes were attracted by the roar they have heard. They settled in and began to interpret the great earthquake as a divine sign and gradually adore it until it became a cult. Together with all this they helped a lot in the works pushed by this faith. Labour at no cost is something that always please me and the other dukes. They also put blood bowl teams together and up to now have not given problems. We'll be thinking of tomorrow for the rest.
BL: Very kind Mr. Intandon, did you know the other teams of the league? Are you afraid of any of them in particular?
SI: Seems that you're not listening to my words. I don't have time to think about that at the moment with the reconstruction and other issues and especially I really don't need to know anything. I can't ask for better guys, we have yet to aquire an award and this is really a lot for the situation that we are living in. Before you arrived I called for the captain Heni Heturin, as it is he who handles the team's plans for the opposition but I really don't know where he is.
BL: I can try to find him, if you like...?
Suddenly I felt strange, like a light weight and an almost imperceptible air movement stirred in the room
SI: You didn't notice ehm?
I felt an hand on my shoulder and a whisper: "Don't move"
The hand passed me a little mirror through which I observed my face, nothing new, if it were not for a spiked ball twirling and balancing on one of my hairs. It made me boggle while Heturin caught the ball with the middle finger keeping the rotation
SI: Ahah yes, here is Heturin and that ball was on your head from the moment you sat, some minutes ago. You can go talk about boring tactics things with him, I'm very busy.
HH: Come i'll show the pitch, as you asked for
Heni took me through a long, damp stone tunnel, which ended in white ivory stairs. As soon as my eyes fell back into the light I found myself facing a green lawn, so bright it hurt my eyes, interrupted only in my attention by the continuous spinning of the ball on Heni's finger. I started to understand why he has been one of the best passer and ball handlers of the entire league. I noticed also that there were no real stands in front of me, just grass, green to make you go crazy, I've never seen anything so pure.
I turned for a moment and only then realized what I had behind me, a huge tribune in blue and ivory granite, with small armchairs covered with ermine fur. I also noticed that the sides were really unaligned and slightly crumbled.
HH: If you are asking yourself, yes, three thousand seat stadium, all like the stand you see, this is the only thing that the earthquake left us; coach is providing the materials and after the reconstruction of the town, we will build a decent stadium for the next CIBBL seasons.
