Saurian Travesties
P [B] Lizardmen

Ok, so I got stuck watching a few lizardman games. I liked what I saw, so I thought I'd give them a try. After a 9+ month hiatus (and returning to see that gobbos still don't have bombers or proper ball&chains) I decided to give lizzies a go. After reading a few write ups on team designs I figured I'd totally ignore everything I read. 6 Saurii? Almost no re-rolls? Bugger that, I just wanted Super Gobs. So that's what I went for. 5 Saurii, 6 Skinks and 4 RR. I'm hoping the extra RR basically pays for itself in RR'ing team winnings. I also hope I can win a game or two with this team. I really am bloody hopeless at this game :)

Game 1: Vs Norse
Result: Lost 0:1

A good game that showed me just how flexible these SOB's are. At one moment I was caging, the next loose-fielding, the next trying to run like hell to back field. The scary thing was, I never felt that I COULDN'T do any of these things at any time. OK, so maybe it's a bit easier to outmanoveour Norse than other teams (which I didn't by-the-way) but still. Caging? Me? Who only plays gobbos? Yep, just about did it anyway..... :)

Things learnt (or to learn): I must learn how to cage for crying out loud. Seriously, it's bread and butter for BB and I still messed it up. I also have to actually look at what block dice I'm pressing. One misclick in the early stages probably cost me the game.

Things I'm proud of: I actually felt that for most of the game my opponent didn't have it easy. He had a horrible start dice-wise (rock to the head kick-off and some bad block rolls early), scored mid-first-half and then had to fight pretty much every turn so I didn't draw it. OK, I'm probably biased, he might have been playing on auto-pilot for all I know. But one good pass late or one less mis-click early and I would have had him. For a draw. Yep, it's pretty sad when you consider a draw an accomplishment. I do BTW :)

Still, the team now has one journeyman until my now-slightly-slower skink comes back and a Saurus with block. Compared to my memories of goblins, I think I'm in love. And I was really lucky with goblins.

Oh, and I completely forgot to save my RR for team winnings. 20k of, errrmmmm, zorkmids? Serves me right.

Game 2: Vs Orcs
Result: 3:0 Win

Yep, it happens to the worst of us. Nope, I didn't play well. My opponent didn't play badly. There was just such an outstanding string of dodges and blocks in my favour along with horrible armour rolls for my opponent(and injury rolls right after) that half the time I just knocked him down and out. Then there was the blitz result at the start of second half. It wasn't his fault. Skinks are damn fast. He was also a pretty new player I think (against me with all of my 10 or so games in LRB6 of experience). Poor bugger fouled out my loner.

Things Learnt: Damn lizzies are quick. Really quick. I'm glad that I took my four RRs, but I didn't really need them by second half. Just burnt them quick (was already 3-0 and up on CAS by then). The game should have been 4-0 but I tried to give a saurus a TD. Hopefully I learnt to not be a bad winner. The dice, the kick-off table, pretty much everything really screwed my opponent over. At least I had the decency not to gloat. Much. Booyah! My first win. I just wish that I felt that I deserved it more.

Things I'm proud of: Fouling the bejesus out of his BO early, busting up so much orc armour and reasonable target selection and strategy. Sort of. Oh, and trying not to be an a-hole when winning. It really wasn't my skill that got me this one.

70k(apothecary), a 5+5 on a skink(went for Block), some nicely spread around SPPs and a little more knowledge about BB. I learnt how to win. Thankyou Nuffle, it couldn't have happened without you.

Game 3: Vs Necromantic
Result: Lost 0:1

Oh how I hate undead. Especially Necromantic teams. Regeneration is a killer (for me). I kind of rely on the odd casaulty here and there to help my ST advantage. You don't get them half as often (or exactly half as often, really) as you do against others when playing against undead. Hurting the opponents players covers up my lack of playing abilities, and gives me some much needed SPP on my saurus. The person I played was pretty good at playing as well. So, yep, I lost.

In my defense it came down to his last turn on a 3+ pick-up roll. If he hadn't made that roll, we would have drawn. He deserved the win (I was outplayed by miles), but still, a 33% chance of tying isn't a bad result in my mind.

I have also retained my keenly honed goblinoid sense that the word "Stunty" means "Completely and Utterly Expendable". Which skinks actually are in my eyes. They're 60k, they come for free as journeymen and they're almost completely skilled from the word go. "Loner" probably will open my eyes to the idiocy of such thoughts. But come-on. They're like goblins with +2MA for +20k and you can get them for free. What's not to like?

It also turns out that one of my skinks is immortal. Or at least for this game. I was on the backfoot, trying to desperately sack his ball carrier (which I tend to do all game anyway, regardless of strategy or actual chance of success) and who should step up to the plate for a go at it? Depv the Immortal. He's tougher than nails, faster than lightning and dodgier than a dodgy thing. 2DB against him when blitzing? He'll do it. Three times in a row (and finally succeeded on a both-down at the end). 3DB from the enemy? Pah! It'll just push him back a bit. A mine field of tackle-zones? It's like dancing on acid to him. The guy is a freak. Damn I hope he survives next match. An honorable mention goes out to Tig as well for starting the ball rolling on suicide-skink-squad duties.

Things learnt: Ok, skinks aren't immortal. I was really lucky to not get half my team hurt or killed this game. I was actually a lot luckier than my opponent on injuries. My opponent also made a few errors and could have caged Depv out of there easily, but damn was it entertaining. It went to the wire. I'll have to learn to play better, cage better, run better and not play BB like a game of "kill-the-man-with-the-ball". Again, I lucked out. Only a 0:1 defeat, it probably should have been worse. I also learnt the joy of last turn CAS SPPs. A couple of points never goes to waste on a saurus.

Things I'm proud of: I managed to hold up a necromantic team for far longer than I usually can. He could have scored earlier, but was running down the clock in the second half, but I wasted a good bit of his time in first half (after another unsuccessful caging attempt by me). I'm also proud of Depv. Actually, that's all I'm really proud of. Just Depv. He's a bloody legend.

Another measely 20k, so I'm saving it. I'll probably grab another saurus after next game. The apothecary saved one of my guys nicely in this game. Money well spent.

Watch the replay. See Depv dodge. Dodge Depv, dodge. See Depv block. Block Depv, block. See Depv get knocked down, pushed back, run a country mile, block again and damn near save me from defeat. See Depv be Depv. Depv is a legend and he's only got 2 SPPs :)

About turn 3 of second half and onwards he proves it.

*****Interim Report on Team******

I like Lizardmen. They're fast, they're pretty hard hitting and they're fun. Goblin type fun, but with reliability to back it up. Looking at how my team is developing I guess it's an alright time to set some future goals and plan a bit of development.

Saurus
-------
Just going to go for plenty of block and guard on these guys. It should hopefully up my kill rate a bit. Once I've got 3 guards, I'll mix in some mighty blow and then maybe some piling-on. I'm not sure about the PO. Saurus are quick for blockers/linemen and I've found them a lot more useful standing up. Still, it is "the" combo for players these days. I just might ignore that completely because I don't tend to play lizardmen how they're "meant" to be played. To me they're just scaly goblins with some decent linemen thrown in. That's how I intend on doing it, whether it's successful or not. I'll buy another saurus after next game, giving me the full roster. I might mix it up a bit between my current 5+6 roster and a 6+5 roster depending on my opponent. I sort of want to try a 4+7 roster against another stunty team at some time if I manage to get another skink on my roster before they all die horribly.

Skinks
------
I've already got a blodger and I might chuck a bit of side-step around if I need to suck up some SPPs. I actually really wanted to pick guard for my doubles skill on that guy, a highly mobile assist would probably suit my style of play well. Although blodge is amazing and will hopefully let this player survive long enough to get some more skills. I haven't used him properly yet (Depv might need a holiday at some point). I intend on developing 2 skinks (my blodger and another) just to suck up SPPs. Everyone says you shouldn't score with skinks but sometimes it's unavoidable. May as well whack all my TDs on one or two of them so my TV doesn't blow out too much. The rest will hopefully stay pretty low. Skinks are amazing straight out of the box, with everything you could want out of such a player from the word go(except Ag4). I wouldn't mind trying for a passer/catcher combo, but with stunty it is a pretty bad choice, and two-three dodges is probably a safer way to gain 8 squares. I've got 6 of the little blighters, so once I grab another saurus I'll have a reserve. I'll need it.

Kroxigor
--------
I haven't really considered buying a krox and probably won't. For an amazingly reliable team, it seems a waste of cash just to get ST5 and MB. Trolls are the thing that cost goblins games, but goblins need them for their strength. Lizardmen don't really need krox. I think I'd rather have more RRs than a point-sink that isn't much better than a Block/Guard/MB saurus. Yes, I fear nega-traits. Who knows, between free skink journeymen and AV9 saurii I might end up with some spare cash at some time. The krox is a maybe, but probably not option.
--------------------------------------------------

****Another Interim Report****

I just read what I wrote. Screw that. It sounds like I know what I'm talking about. It sounds like I actually think my players will survive more than the next game. It sounds boring, really, really boring. I'll ACTUALLY just try and have fun. Gameplan is "play the next game and have fun." Possible even !!FUN!!, in the dwarf fortress sense of the word. Aren't skinks just little ball-thieving kobolds anyway?

So, current development goals. 1: Try and win. 2: Try and make sure my skinks do some statiscally unrealistic things. 3: Get guard on a skink if I ever get doubles again. Never ask on IRC what I should do. 4: Have a heap of fun and crack some heads while doing it (this is the most important one).

Game 4: Vs Undead.
Result 1-2 Loss

Yep, I really do hate undead. Stupid undead. This time it wasn't regeneration that saved him (although there was an early roll he made), it was the fact that he had an absolutely massive roster. Four reserves at this level? That's the most I'ver seen except on Goblins or Halfings. And fouls ahoy, he used them well. I got the brown stuff kicked right out of a lot of players. My opponent played well, played to his strengths and won fairly. It was pretty much all over by the beginning of the second half (I'd taken some casaulties and he still had a ten-man roster). My "normal" weird dodge and block results evening out to "actually normal and average" didn't help. Everything that every player did was pretty much what you'd expect, or slightly worse in many cases. It had to happen some time......

Normal sux. I didn't even do anything I thought was cool. Bleh. Oh, and suicide skinks can be hurt. It also turns out Depv can be hurt. Knocked out at least. Still, it took two 3DBs, a 2DB against and a +3 foul to do it. Not bad I guess. I really should have taken another 2DB against chance instead of moving a saurus (who fell over anyway whilst dodging and wasted a RR).

Things I learnt: I really hate undead teams. I knew this already, I just hate them more now. I also learnt that you can't necessarily rely on razzle-dazzle moves to pull you out of a bad position. I will still do so though, because it's fun. I'll actually probably use weird, unlikely moves even when a normal, "safe" thing would have worked just as well. It's fun. I also learnt not to foul. Ever. I need my skinks too much and I can't even think of a saurus being sent off by the ref. In the first 7 fouling attempts we had 6 send-offs (two of them mine). So the fouling button should never be used by me. Skinks are so handy on the field that there's very few other players that it would be worthwhile risking it for. This is the first time I've had a bit of a beef with fouling really. My opponent was a bit "happy" with them, even when the game was essentially over in the second half. But then again, that's what his team was based around as a strategy on the pitch. It was called "To Foul" for crying out loud, so it's not as though I couldn't see it coming. No one died, only one "missed next game" result, heaps of bans from it. So fair game I say.

Things I'm proud of: I pulled a nice rope-a-dope touch-down in the first half. Went pretty smoothly really. Took a few casaulties doing it, but fortunately no one died . I'll have to remember to put some more saurii in decent blocking/caging positions so I can slow down my play a lot more. Time on the clock when receiving the kick-off is not my friend. I'll have to learn to run that clock right down so my opponent can't score in return.

Depv's current hits (and misses) whilst on suicide duty: 6x3DB, 2x2DB, 4x2DB opponents choice and a +3 foul. 9 "useful" dodge rolls. 1 KO received. There's probably a lot more. I'll see just how much the poor bugger can take.

40k winnings, got my 6th saurus (which is good, because one is missing next game) and got a skill on a skink. I chose side-step just for the hell of it. Next game? Hopefully not another damn regenning pack of bastards.......

Game 5: Vs Norse
Result: Lost 1-3

It was horrible. It was a therapy session. It taught me a lot about psychology and what pixels mean to me. Fortunately they mean very little. They're pixels on a computer screen, it's just a game, and a fun one at that. What am I on about?

Picture my poor little skink, who's innocently minding his own business, in no danger what-so-ever of going anywhere near the ball. All of a sudden a big, burly, oiled-up man appears and blocks him. He takes the hit, rolls into a slightly foetal defensive ball and thinks it's all over. Then the slightly lisping bearded man jumps on him, smothering him, grabbing him, grabbing in places that no skink should be grabbed. Another five men swiftly surround the poor skink. He begins crying. Then the gang fouling began..........

That pretty much describes how this game went. I'd just recently watched this coach play against someone else, so I knew what I was in for. It was actually a bit of a laugh really. I got butchered, I got stomped, I got fouled to high heaven. But I didn't really care. It wasn't that bad of a game. The chat window makes all the difference between a good game and a bad game. I had a lot of fun regardless. The game that I watched my opponent play, his opponent was anti-fouling, where as I see it as just another part of the game. Sometimes the ref is partial to partially dressed men it appears :)

Time to rebuild my team, but I'm pretty sure they can come back stronger than before.

Things I learnt: Don't ever really care about your players. Bad things happen to them. It's called Blood Bowl for a reson, these things happen. I also learnt to lose quite gracefully, even when the dice aren't helping me. I was out-played badly but never lost my cool. I lost the game, but my mojo is still safely intact from oiled-up Norsemen. I also learnt to NEVER think an apothecary is actually a good use of money. From a fractured skull to dead? Thanks doc, I'll take the fractured skull. I also learned to use the chat window, it puts you in a good mood. Laugh, congratulate, even swear a bit (in context of course), but have fun. I'm playing against a person, we're playing for fun. The chat window lets you do that, no matter how the game is going for you.

Things I'm proud of: My skinks armour and injury rolls. This doesn't look like a good result, but it's not as bad as it could have been. I'm kind of also proud that I'm not going to retire the team. There will be a rebuilding phase, but this hasn't set me back all that much. Oh, and I'm proud of making jokes at the Norse's expensive. You can take the piss out of the team, not the player.

Depv's hits and misses: Ok, Depv didn't do much this game. One 2DB opponents choice and one +1 foul (with DP) made him badly hurt. Still, he's not dead yet, so in my eyes he's still immortal (although not invulnerable sadly). I should have used him more instead of wasting a RR on saurus dodging (which failed, AGAIN). So 6x3DB, 2x2DB, 5x2DB opponents choice, 10 dodges, one +3 foul and one +1DP foul.

60k winnings, a couple of free journeymen (until everyone comes back), some injuries and a doubles roll on Vrrrrsk (a blodging Saurus. Yayy!) which should come into its own with BT. It'll keep him upright a bit more too. So far he has 3MVPs, so the jury must like him as much as I like Depv.

I thought this game would be my hold-over game until I had my full roster back, but it looks like it will be next one as well. Still, at least I can try out my awesome 4+7 roster idea and get to save a few bucks on journeymen. I hope the jury still loves Vrrrrsk for the MVP.

Game 6: Vs Chaos Dwarves
Result: Lost 0-3

Nope, didn't learn nothing. Didn't do nothing. Ok, I did learn a tiny bit. Got my arse kicked, but wasn't really trying. Meh, RL issues, my missus just finished work.

Things I learnt: Tackle sort of nullifies dodge, blodge and other stuff. Block does the rest. You don't need to play non-engagement BB to keep your players safe. I didn't go screaming at him, I got my arse kicked, but I didn't go hide in a corner either. Everyone's back and raring to go!

Things I'm proud of: No one died, no one got injured, everyone is back. 4+7 rosters don't work nearly as well as you'd imagine. Depv is on holidays, he didn't do much this game. Neither did anyone. The jury still REALLY loves Vrrrrsk. 4MVPs from 6 games. Nice.

20k, nothing spent, nothing gained (except my whole team back), nothing learnt. I'm sort of eyeing off that krox now though.

Yep, quick report. It's BB, they happen sometimes.
