So...

There is a word oft said amongst the Dwarfs of the Old World.

It can be heard mumbled in the deep places beneath the lands of men, and called out over the whistling wind on the tallest snow-capped peaks of the Worldspine Mountains. It comes as quickly to the lips of dying Dwarf warriors as it does to raucous Dwarf merrymakers. It is a curse and a prayer, a question and an answer.

As the astute will already have guessed, that word is "beer".

And amongst the many varieties of Dwarf beer, Gibbo's Beardy Brew is the most famous. No ordinary grog, the flavour of this velvety dark ale is generally considered by those rare few who have tasted it to be the finest of any comestible in the known world.

So highly prized is the Beardy amongst the Dwarf people that it has been at times worth literally more than its weight in gold. It may be no exaggeration to say that Gibbo's Beardy Brew is, alongside Steam Power and the art of Ridiculous Grudgery, one of the most significant contributions of the Dwarfish people to the advancement of world civilisation. It is well accepted amongst Dwarf historians that the Beardy Brew has been present on the table at every great truce and treaty in Dwarf history – can this be a coincidence?

No.

However, the preternaturally tasty Brew is a two-sided coin. As many treaties have been broken as have been forged over a few frosty Beardys, often by a simple mishap - an overly enthusiastic drinker taking his fill from the wrong tankard, a spillage over a recently-signed accord, a confusion over whose round it is.

Worse yet was what men call the "Great Strife of 1130", but what every Dwarf knows by the more descriptive title of Eleven Thirsty. A year’s worth of Beardy was stolen from the Brewery in an Orc raid. The mayhem that ensued is one of the most shameful chapters in Dwarf history, indeed only the prodigious numbers of trollslayers that were born in the chaos of that fateful year allow the Dwarf people to forgive themselves for that barbarous time.

Fortunately, the Orc raiding party was later found dead from alcohol poisoning, and the majority of the Brew recovered. Order was restored, and Dwarf society rejoiced with a great outpouring of merriment. A Public holiday was declared, and amnesty for all those who had transgressed the law during the riots. Dwarfs who only a day ago had been locked in mortal combat mumbled tearful apologies and embraced in the street (and anyone who knows anything about Dwarfs will recognise the rarity of such an event).

However, amongst the rejoicing, wiser heads took a dim view of the situation. Had not the Brew been the cause of all this? What of next time, when more than just a year’s Brew was lost?

It is said that when he heard the news, the Great Brewer Gibbo scratched his beard and said grimly – “Bar’s closed.”

And he meant it, for he took his brewers far from the Dwarf strongholds and established a new Brewery, a hidden fortress whose location would be a jealously kept secret and where the powers of the Beardy could be guarded and controlled.

Gibbo’s Beardy Brew is now dispatched by the descendants of the Great Brewer only where they see fit. It sometimes comes to alehouses, sometimes to the parlay-tables of generals, sometimes to kings and sometimes to paupers – but always where it will do lawful good, and never again the chaotic evil of Eleven Thirsty.

But who keeps the Beardy stuff safe from prying eyes? The heroes of Gibbo’s legacy – Dwarfs of the toughest mettle sworn to protect the Brewery and its dark secrets at all costs. Chosen from the among the bravest and most iron-willed of Dwarf warriors, they are a brotherhood founded on the highest ideals and committed utterly to the guiding principle that no Dwarf shall ever be Thirsty again.

Warriors of the most fearsome might and single-minded dedication, they are the banshee's wail to their foes and an answered prayer to their friends.

They are Gibbo’s Beardy Blokes.

Between drinks, they play Bloodbowl.
