Born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1928, Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna studied medicine before traveling around South America, observing conditions that spurred his Marxist beliefs. He aided Fidel Castro in overturning the Batista government in the late 1950s, and then held key political offices during Castro's regime. Guevara later engaged in guerrilla action elsewhere, including in Bolivia, where he was captured and executed in 1967.

Toussaint L’Ouverture was a former slave who rose to become the leader of the only successful slave revolt in modern history, the Haitian Revolution. The initial slave uprising was quelled within several days, but ongoing fighting between the slaves, free blacks, and planters continued. Although he was a free man, L’Ouverture joined the slave insurgency and quickly became one of the insurgency’s leaders. By 1801, although Saint Dominque remained ostensibly a French colony, L’Ouverture was ruling it as an independent state. He drafted a constitution in which he reiterated the 1794 abolition of slavery and appointed himself governor for “the rest of his glorious life."
In 1803 Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life, but a few months later, Napolean invited Toussaint to come to a negotiating meeting will full safe conduct. When he arrived, he was arrested, and putting him on a ship headed for France. Napoleon ordered that Toussaint be placed in a prison dungeon in the mountains, and murdered by means of cold, starvation, and neglect. Toussaint died in prison, but others carried on the fight for freedom.

Simón Bolívar was a South American soldier who was instrumental in the continent's revolutions against the Spanish empire. Born into wealth, Bolívar was sent to Spain for his education, soon deciding to immerse himself in the political sphere in Europe. After France invaded Spain in 1808, he became involved in the resistance movement and played a key role in the Spanish American fight for independence. In 1825, the "Republic of Bolivia" was created in honour of the inspirational leader, hailed by many as El Libertador (The Liberator). He died on December 17, 1830 in Colombia.

Beaumarchais was born Pierre-Augustin Caron in the Rue Saint-Denis, Paris on 24 January 1732, the only boy among the six surviving children of André-Charles Caron, a watchmaker. In 1755, he married Madeleine-Catherine Aubertin, who helped him secure a royal office. Shortly after his marriage, he adopted the name "Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais", believing the name sounded grander and more aristocratic.
After his wife's death, he was appointed to teach King Louis XV's daughter the harp and became a musical advisor to the royal family. He debuted as a playwright with Eugénie in 1767, and rose to fame with the Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro.
As an agent of Louis XVI he conducted spying missions across Europe, and established a shell company to secretly traffick arms, munitions and supplies to American revolutionaries.
Despite being a wealthy man and possessed of noble titles, he supported the French Revolution and pledged his allegiance to the new government. He was briefly and falsely declared émigré, and spent two years exiled in Germany before returning to Paris and living the remainder of his life in relative peace.

Petra Herrera was a Soldadera, who fought in the Mexican Revolution, initially under the pseudonym “Pedro Herrera”. Petra was an aggressive fighter, who took on leadership roles and responsibilities, commanding a force of 200 men. Upon establishing a strong reputation amongst her peers, Herrera revealed her identity as a woman.
Herrera had an especially notable role in the second battle of Torreón, fighting alongside 400 other women. She further demonstrated her leadership capabilities by forming her own brigade of female soldiers. As acknowledgement of her accomplishments she was made a colonel.
She later served as a spy for the Carrancistas, a northern revolutionary army in Chihuahua, and was in disguise as a bartender in Jiménez when she was fatally shot by a group of drunken men.

Phoolan Devi, the "Bandit Queen," is remembered as both a champion of India's poor and one of the modern nation's most infamous outlaws. Following an early, nonconsensual marriage and several sexual abductions, Devi began a streak of violent robberies across northern and central India, targeting upper castes. In 1981 she led her gang of bandits to massacre more than 20 men in the high-caste village where her former lover was killed. Devi negotiated her sentence with the Indian government to 11 years in jail. Within two years of her release, she was elected to Parliament. While some say she did little to improve the lower castes' plight during her two terms in office, her opposition to the caste system made Devi a symbol for the rights of the poor and the oppressed.

Phoolan was recognised as a Regional Rising Star in Season LXV, for her 113 turns on the pitch.

In 1926, Augusto César Sandino emerged as a guerrilla leader, and organized an army which fought against the US military in Nicaragua. The following year, the revolutionary raged a war against the US, which he stated as their enemy. He even declined to accept the terms and conditions of the ‘Espino Negro’ Accord. In 1933, the US Marines withdrew from Nicaragua. Six years of continuous rebellion had freed Nicaragua from the grip of the US army.
