And The Winners Are…
The last of the “Sweet 16” has punched their ticket to the GLT main draw, which will be released August 5. Competing teams are some of FUMBBL’s best, with a little bit of pure speed and a hefty dose of brute force. One thing is for sure: bring your lucky coin because overtime was not enough in many of these qualifiers.
Let the prognostications begin, where our experts, Plorg and Prinz, lay out their picks for the those who will move to the Elite 8. All FUMBBLers are invited to post their own comments and show our “experts” the error of their ways.
The 16 qualifiers include the usual suspects: 5 orc, 3 chaos, 2 skaven, and 1 each of wood elves, dark elves, necromantic, dwarf, chaos dwarf and undead. That is a lot of av9 folks. High elves win the surprise MIA award. Those of you planning on preparing for the next major might be interested to know that average TR of the 16 qualifiers is a smidge over of 267 at press time. The average final score in those qualifying rounds was about 2-1, so the classic formula, with only the dark elves scoring 4 times. Ironically the wood elves won 1-0.
A little information about our fair contestants:
Qualifier I Winner: Horde of Horca, an Orc team coached by dadoz won the final after coming up large on the coin toss following a 2-2 overtime scoreline against Mr_Launcher’s famous Wood Elves Forest Fools. The Horde also ended the hopes of Rijssiej’s Orc team Erhnamgeddon after another 2-2 overtime affair determined by a coin toss. dadoz must be living right! He won the first round in a hard fought affair with Meech’s Necromantic team Commercial Corruption.
Qualifier II Winner: Flix used his admin client to take his Orc team Skull Crushas past Hindsberg’s Khemri Greatest Ever, in yet another 2-2 overtime affair determined by a coin toss. The defiant Orcs outgunned Gary_Gygax’s Elf team Final Achievement 3-2 in round two after opening with a 2-0 thumping of Sysiphos’ Chaos team Isenburg Ironhoofs in the opening round.
Qualifier III Winner: Frankenstein’s Dwarf team Kraut Surfers hung 10 while defeating Gitzbang’s Skaven team Voices from the Dark 2-1. The Kraut Surfers conquered JackDaniels’ Chaos Dwarf team Discworld United 2-1 in round 2 and handily defeated Topper28’s human team Body Like a Battleaxe 3-0 in the opening stanza.
Qualifier IV Winner: ankkh’s Skaven Hifflitik's Runners ran circles around Idolen’s Wood Elf team Oakwood Protectors in the final before winning 3-0. In the second round, the feisty rats sent Reventlov’s High Elf team Ulthan Nobles into exile with a 2-1 victory. The Runner’s proved immune to Frankie’s Lizardmen Cherry Flavored Venom with a 4-2 victory to start the round.
Qualifier V Winner: Sandune’s Orc team Greenskin Horde cleaned out the pretty boys in a 3-0 victory over fork’s Chaos Dwarf team Darkstar Dandies, proving once again that Orcs do not like high fashion. In their second round game against Mossbeard’s Orcs, Crazytalk Tribe, the Greenskin Horde decided pillow talk was more appropriate while posting a 2-0 victory. While not allowing a goal during their qualifier run, Sandune’s squad told McCloud “there can be only one—and you are not it this time”, in his 3-0 victory over his Chaos Dwarf team the Jemaline Concordium.
Qualifier VI Winner: In an all-Orc final, JB’s Butcher Boyz made cutlets out of MadTias’ Teef Rippers. In an offensive explosion, the Boyz defeated OldBugMan’s Wood Elf team Defenders of the Oak 3-2 in round two. As it turns out, the Boyz were lucky to get that far after drawing 1-1 in overtime with Lodnar’s nasty Dwarven squad Fireblood’s Followers and advancing only after a lucky coin toss.
Qualifier VII Winner: Pmg clinched his Evil Hand Orc team in victory after Menikmati’s Undead Rotten Convenience forfeited the final round, denying the spectators a chance to watch what looked to be a very competitive match on paper.. Showing the Evil Hand does indeed prefer the Undead, he hand-jived his way by pred_dachande’s Undead An Appalling Lack of Character team 2-1 in round two. Olivia Newton John would have been proud. Pmg added his name to the long list of GLT lucky coin toss winners in round one after drawing against Balkir’s Chaos teamBleeder’s.
Qualifier VIII Winner: CopyCat’s Chaos team Traitors! Mutants! Commies! continued the trend of bashy winners while scoring a major upset over Oventa’s touted Wood Elf team Liras Leveler. In the prior round, Copycat showed that champions no longer reside in New England, with a 2-1 axing of Kenty’s Human team Patriots of Foxboro. Copycat initialized his tri-fecta of victories of excellent coaches by taking out PeteW’s Chaos team Magical Mismatch 1-0 in the opening stanza.
Qualifier IX Winner: Malthor’s TR giants (no not those TR giants), the Wood Elf Athel Loren Guardians, put a new tombstone over Nafets’ Undead Graveyard Saints to close out the qualifier finals. The Guardians had just come off a 5-0 obliteration of Timppa81’s Lizardmen Tlaxtlan Cruzaders in round two. The speedy Woodies opened with a 4-1 destruction of Booahl’s Lizardmen My First and Last.
Qualifier X Winner: Cloggy’s Chaos Dwarf team Doomy Diggers team completed a very impressive finals by impeaching the impressive Dark Elf Team Frederick III coached by Zatoc’s in a 2-1 result. The second round was an all Chaos Dwarf battle for supremacy, with Cloggy sending ibar’s tall-hatted ones Karrantza home early. The Diggers ensured at least one Orc team wouldn’t make the GLT, posting a 1-0 defeat of Warmduscher’s greenskins 419 Scam.
Qualifier XI Winner: Dominik’s Chaos monsters Scharfe Biester further mitigated the Orc dominace by scoring a 2-1 decision over Lewdgrip’s greenskins Lungentorpedos. In the second round, Dominik’s team proved Biester than deferr’s Chaos team Juan Barajon II. Uber’s Dark Elf team, the NFL Pro Bowlers learned the meaning of this year’s trend of bash over flash, losing 2-1 to Dominik.
Qualifier XII Winner: Faramir’s punched the only Undead ticket into the main draw with his Untote leben laenger defeating bloodelf’s Chaos team Ancient Horned Ones with a 2-1 victory. In a round 2 showdown where no one had a pulse but the referee, Untote advanced over demoler’s Undead Death Dynamo Fantastic, apparently by forfeit. Faramir started the qualifier with a 3-0 spanking of jimjo’s Orcs, the Red Dragon Gladiators.
Qualifier XIII Winner: Overdose’s Dark Elf team Agile cats for a change took the qualifier finals scoring crown with a 4-0 watershed game over Jokaero’s Dwarves. The round prior, Overdose had already proven he could handle the Dwarven menace with a 3-0 victory over tribalsinner’s bearded ones, Grundle. Overdose romped it home as well in the first round, and didn’t allow a score throughout the qualifier, in out-gunning skavenboy's Skaven Run En Gunners 5-0. Quite a qualifier.
Qualifier XIV Winner: kwèk brought the only Necromantic team into the GLT main draw, advancing in a very hard-fought 1-1 coin toss against PurpleChest’s Chaos Dwarf team Short Wild Purple. kwèk also stopped any further Orc dominance by stopping peikko’s greenskins Timmy and Lords of the Underwold, 2-1 in the second round. torsoboy’s Skaven Pancake Park Privateers put up a struggle, but fell in the end to kwek’s claws, 2-1 in the opening round.
Qualifier XV Winner: Bendrig brought the fourth and final av7 team into the main draw when his unpronouncable Skaven Dovie’andi se tovya sagain posted a 2-1 decision over DaNi_BcN’s Dark Elf team, the Naggaroth Dark Daggers. Like so many games before, Bendrig rode the coin toss, GLT’s newest religion, into the finals over ansalon4’s Orc team Eggon’s Prayer following a 1-1 overtime coin toss. Scoring was not an issue in the first round for Dovie, however, as they put up a 5-1 final against Kekskommander’s Humans Maveriks.
Qualifier XVI Winner: Buur won the last chance sweepstakes 1-0 with his Chaos team Haanbold Piger, proving that Synn’s Norse team Fluffy Kittens and More can indeed be cuddly at times. Buur faced another famous opponent and legendary team in his second round edging of AFK_Eagle’s and his Skaven Weapon Masters. Never bring a knife to a gunfight. Haanbold began the qualifier like they ended it, 1-0. This time over Mithrilpoint’s Orcs, the Northwest Negotiators.
