Hi there.

I have experimented with assigning new icons to certain players on my teams and had quite some fun using a complete new set of downloaded (and partially redesigned) icons on my Orc-team.

It all worked fine according to the guide-tread "Custom-Icons for dummies ...", thats to say I set up a custom folder for each race that included the properly renamed icons and pointed the respective players to the correct icon in the icons.ini

e.g:

SLIM JIM=custom/Orcs_icons_r/BO1.gif

Hence giving my first Blackorc a kewl new icon ...

----

So far so good.
Now the problem I got:

(Just telling you all of the above to make clear that I definately got the basics down and didn't screw up on some stupid pathfinding issue or something.)

Now, I wanted to give the two niggling-rats on my Skaven-team a new icon so I now right away whom to place on the LoS Wink

IT DOESN'T WORK THOUGH !!!

These guys appear as "L" symbols in the client and it seems there is nothing I can do about it.

I also tried the following things to check on any odd problems that might have occured:

1. assigning a path/icon which I know for sure is working on another team (the Blackorc-path above for example)
-> failure!

2. assigning an original unmodified icon (sklineman1.gif) which I had previously COPIED to my custom-skaven folder
-> failure!

3. setting up a copy of the complete original icons folder (pics/icons) in my custom folder and moving the new icon to this folder, then assigning properly: custom/icons_orig/sklineman_redesign.gif
-> failure!

4. assigning an original unmodified icon (sklineman1.gif or ANY other) from the copied original folder as described under "3."
-> it works!!

5. trying all of the above with more than just the two linerats on my skaven team
-> same results for any position/player

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THOSE SKAVEN?

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME OUT HERE?

Im not 100% sure what you have tried so far, but if you want to assign unique icons for specific players, not just positions, then you need to set up a [PLAYERS] section in your icons.ini file.

this has been snipped from the readme file for the client:

----------------------------------------------------------------
61. Icons.ini [PLAYERS] Section
----------------------------------------------------------------
New for 8.6+ you can add a [PLAYERS] section to the icons.ini
file. This section is for assigning specific icons to
players based on their names. As each player is loaded from
the roster the program first checks the [PLAYERS] section of
icons.ini to see if there is a specific icons assigned to
this player. If yes, then the specified icon is used.

Yeah, I did that of course and like I said:

It's already working just fine for a complete Orc-team and a couple players on my other teams.

Something is wrong with the Skaven-teams however.
(or maybe only my specific Skaven-team)

I can tell there must be some misc error because the client apparently got the idea of me assigning a new icon to those specific players. Otherwise he wouldn't display them as "L".
I am 99,9% sure that the paths I tried were correct as well.

Why oh why wont he do it then??

Here is the link to my team. Just in case it helps:

just a thought without ever having tried this myself, is there a size limit to the icon image file?

I believe there is which is probably why some people have created icons for the large and small pitches in this section.

This can't be the problem either though, because I tried completetly unmodified, original icons from the "medium" category as well.
Also, I dont mess around with the pic-dimensions/characteristics when alternating it.

I just copy/paste an original icon to my custom-folder and paint some parts of the icon differently while not even changing the colour-scheme.
(Which sucks on the Skaven because they apparently only feature different shades of brown and grey ... What does "RGP" or "indexed" colours mean anyways?)

When I do it I don't bother with a different folder. That could be the problem. And I also assume you have the an, b and ban images as well (or at least the an)?

So when doing a custom icon, e.g. Image

I would put the following in my icons.ini folder:

[PLAYERS]

SOW THE PIG=pigbeast1.gif

Hm ... Yeah I did copy/paste and rename the "an" icon as well.
(Didn't repaint it though.)

I might give this one a shot even though as pointed out above:

It is working perfectly on any other team, even with an extra custom-folder and subfolder.

E.g.:

[PLAYERS]

SOW THE PIG=custom/pigteam/pigbeast1.gif

(pigbeast1an.gif existent in this very folder that is ...)

Nope. Doesn't work either:

[PLAYERS]

SOLEY LONGCLAW=niggleskaven.gif

niggleskaven.gif simply being a copy of the original sklineman1.gif and its "an"-icon as well

I dont think JavaNuffle wants my Skaven to be customized Crying or Very sad *sob

Sounds like you've just made a minor typo in Icons.ini to me. Try renaming the icon to something really simple and correcting the icon.ini accordingly.

Or try amending it to niggleskaven1.gif.

Also have you actually labelled the icon .gif rather than it just simply being a gif file?

No typing error but no labelling as .gif either.

It does carry the proper "addy" (.gif) when looked at in the detailed overview of the explorer however.

---

Instead it is kind of official:

MY ACADEMY SKAVEN TEAM IS BUGGED and apparently wont accept any custom-icons.

I went and created a new skaven team in "R" and tried assigning the exact same icon to a player on the new team:

IT WORKS! ... just like that.

Am I going to try out wether the team actually will accept custom-icons whenever I create a new team from now on? And if not retire the team immediately?

I would really like to know what kind of "bug" can jam a particular team ...

I love how he explains the difficulty of getting the shading right when creating a new icon for the Client ... Thanks for that link! Wink

@ G-Force:

No it's not.
I would gladly swap this weird incompatibility of my team for a general "not being able to customize academy-teams" though, simply because I just hate random bugs.

On a related matter:

Anybody feel like explaining the importance of
"RVG"/"indexed" colour-mode when using GIMP
to manipulate or create icons?
