World Record
I mentioned the world record attempt exactly two months ago in my blog post below. Now he did it. Sunday morning, close to 7AM, FM Marc Lang finished his world record attempt in simultaneous blindfold chess on 46 boards in less than 24 hours - he finished with a spectacular 34,5 points (out of 46) and has after 64 years raised the world record mark in this discipline!
I was a lucky (and still tired) participant in this event and it was a phantastic experience. I was one of the lucky blokes to snatch half a point from him in a match that was way better than my normal level and I was pleased to hear that he was delighted about my draw offer at shortly past 5AM on sunday morning (after having played for almost 20 hours already). I was in a slightly better position, but I didn't consider the match winable given that he defends correctly. Also - my physical condition was miserable by then already and concentration went missing somewhere along the match ...
Marc lost only two matches where a knight or a rook went missing by a blunder - but he didn't lose the memory of a single match from his head and played very safely. He is a worthy record holder now and his performance was way beyond normality! Actually a bit freaky even. I talked to him this morning on the phone and he slept well and apparently (from all my damaged brain can assess) he still is a normal guy who had a lot of fun this weekend.
Also grandmasters have been there to watch, comment or the like by the way, e.g. GM Vlastimil Hort, GM Jan Gustafson, GM David Baramidze.
A very impressive thing. I doubt I will ever see anything of the like again.

I played a couple of games of blind chess against a friend once (although I was allowed to check the board every 20 moves) and that was quite difficult.
I have no idea how this chap managed to keep 46 boards in his head though! Even in my single game I was resorting to piece exchanges, just to make things easier to memorise.

Nice one. Once I and a friend played against a third friend where he was blindfolded.
We even had been drinking quite heavily and yet he beat us without blinking... Well couldnt tjeck for the blindfolds though ;)
Anyway he explained that he can have three chessboards in his brain where he can actually see them (what he said) and just played there.
But 46 games....
