Meh.....
7 losses, 2 draws and 1 win in last ten games. And the games BEFORE that weren't much better...

I seem to be on a downwards spiral. My tactics lack imagination or flair, I am increasingly resorting to trying simplistic, 'smash my way through' tactics and thus being outplayed. I instinctively play 'Bash' style teams but aren't much good at them. Although I am mentally capable of playing strategically (I do so in other games quite effectively) I seem unable to use that part of my brain regularly enough playing BB.

Inducement games seem to be a nightmare for me with none of them (apart from halfling master chef) ever working.

My Khemri team in the KPL is a disaster, barely offering a competitive game.

145 league helps but due to timings, I have not been able to get enough games as I would have liked.

I thought I would try Blackbox for variety but my first game I lose by concession going 1-0 with 2 dead dorfs in first half. Team now retired. I fear more disasterous games if I attempt blackbox again right now..

Increasingly I seem to be mentally resigned to losing earlier and earlier in games and thus 'switching off' a bit. I have no confidence really with this game at the moment. But I don't like to just give up and walk away.I don't mind losing. I just despair at playing games where it feels like I can't even do anything competitive/interesting/productive etc in them.

So wise FUMBBL folk - what DO I do to break this pattern? Any useful advice? Is this normal? Am I just playing the wrong game?

Just play low TV amazons or pact in the box for a while. I hear it makes you feel like a man again.... ;P

But you don't get to choose in the Box.....

No no. You make a zon or pact team and cheese the team up and keep the tv low.

Look at kfoged's zons or smallman's pact or CD.

What some of the top coaches play (e.g., legendary coaches in game finder), think about what you would do in the situation and then watch what they do instead and understand why it was better or smarter. In our own games, start trying to anticipate what your opponent will do and then think about how to make it more difficult. When they surprise you and do something different (sometimes smarter), you learn from that. Maybe that's a tactic you can reproduce in other situations?

The main thing is learning to play in such a way that one or two bad rolls will not destroy you. Whenever possible, always move players before rolling, always think about your positioning with respect to the ball or to protecting the ball carrier before you roll any dice. You don't want a 1, 1 to mean you automatically lose the game when you could have instead setup in a way that a 1, 1 would be unfortunate but you'd still have a chance, etc.

Thanks for advice :) I am ok with trying to get the non dice moves done first etc and thinking about positioning, what my opponent will do etc. I just need to be better at it I guess :)

watch your own replay on some games.

you see things that you never saw when actually playing that game.

Not one to offer advice with my record, but I would say it looks like you play mostly Orc, a race that's not suited to strategy as much as other races(say elves).Orc's rely on blocking, which is mostly dice related, while races with more movement and agility offer more non-blocking movement options.

I put in a post on the forum thread looking at one of your matches. The thing I love about BB is there's always something to learn & I hope it helps. I would say that you shouldn't focus so much on winning though - have some fun! I went through a period where I was worried too much about my CR - after playing AKARenton's Dirty Cranberries (all zombie team) I decided to play my own version & just enjoy the game. It's also good to try and become a better coach, but don't forget the fun part.

Try not doing anything for 30 seconds before starting your turn. Use the time to plot and think

Some pieces of advice (maybe someone already wrote those, i didn't read every answer) :

- try to play easier, plug and play teams like Humans, Orcs, Dark Elves. Exotic teams like Khemri are harder to handle

- the turnover is your worst enemy. Try to plan your actions from the less risky (moving players, getting assists, protect your ball carrier) to the riskiest. Don't play your loner(s) first.

- spectate games from experienced coaches

- protect your ball carrier, especially if you like to play bashy teams, who will generalyl be less likely to recover it if it's stolen

- using a reroll on a roll that doesn't cause a turnover is generally a bad idea, especially at low TV when you can't afford to have 3 or 4 RRs.

- watch out for crowd surfing, especially if the opponent has a Frenzy player

- and of course, have fun :)
