Gamefinder and it's problems
*First blog , please be indulgent*

As an reasonably seasoned player , I have started to recognize some problems both in the Ranked gamefinder and blackbox: Blackbox being almost empty and finding an opponent is incredibly hard for someone with an ''uncommon timezone'' and the Ranked being that almost no one wants to play bashy teams , creating somewhat of a drought in late matches. I know some people will tell me to go to hell because i enjoy playing bashy teams , but alas this blog entry will not cover that point. I am someone who will play against any teams , providing there is not an enormous difference in tv but some coaches will cherrypick to a point where I cannot find any games between 1AM server time to 5AM server time , even though i see some coaches searching for games.

Do any of you have an idea on how i could find more games or i should just give up on playing during late nights ?

your only team on GF right now is

Dankest Chaos Kill-Team

Houston, I think we may have identified the problem.
Posted by asteflix on 2015-12-29 03:52:27
True , it probably has to do with that :P
Posted by harvestmouse on 2015-12-29 04:06:36
I wouldn't play that team in ranked, and I know I don't cherry pick anymore. You have 3 Ranked teams; Orcs, Nurgle and Chaos......and you're looking for games with them between 1am and 5am....simply you'd need to get lucky, especially with your build philosophy.

To clarify the above response to your post...
Your ranked league team has a clawpomb player: very few people will play that when they have the choice to face another team.

I have learnt to keep my clawpomb players exclusively for the black box (although I coach agile races there too) because I know the situation will be exactly like the one you describe.

Switch to orcs (not even mentioning elves) in ranked games and you will see the difference very quickly.

As to the fact that you cannot get blackbox games easily, unfortunately even for a player in a more common timezone like me (GMT), I sometimes struggle to get an opponent at any times of the day/week and thus have to let 3-4 slots pass by until I have a match arranged.

Good luck.

I've edited this a couple of times, now I've had a good look. The 'problem' with GF is that it's doing it's job, filtering out the B.S teams.

It's not just the CPOMBer (though yeah it's a major issue), there are other factors. There is a lot of MB in the team (talking the developed Chaos team here) and only 11 players and a big bank.

What does this tell me? Firstly he is really watching the TV, so is looking for teams with less skills/more players. In other words most teams' best 11 will be inferior to your teams best 11. Secondly he's confident about not being outnumbered. This tells me the plan is to remove players so that his 11 won't be an issue.

Then look at the team name, and the goal in the bio....I mean WTF, you really expect to get games. The surprise to me is that you've got so many.

So that's the game basically, you try to remove players with endless CPOMB blitzes, I try to ride out the storm. Not that entertaining, not great for building teams. Not very fair if I turn up with a 14 man roster. So yeah, count me out if I'm on GF.

So there isn't a problem with GF. You're basically trying to play Ranked with a Box team, that's admittedly out to kill and struggling to get games.
Posted by pythrr on 2015-12-29 04:49:38
^^ yeah, not a lot of upside in agreeing to play vs that team.
Posted by NerdBird on 2015-12-29 04:57:04
lol. If you want to find games more frequently, play box. But yeah, in ranked pretty much what everyone else said. The only other teams that are going to play you in ranked are NOOBS or minmaxed teams. Would you play vs a min-maxed Chorf team?

I wouldn't even need to look at your team beyond the yellow box to know I would not play. I get it you are new and it is much easier to survive playing this way but it seriously diminishes the quality of the game for a lot of people. Even if they win, they come away damaged. Think about it.

Posted by NerdBird on 2015-12-29 05:02:10
And now I looked at your Team Bio; trying to kill one of every race. If you are going to play this kind of META game you need to take the games that come...they will be fewer.

Posted by Rbthma on 2015-12-29 05:02:29
^^yup, doesn't look like an enjoyable match(talking about Dankest Chaos Kill-Team) from a few viewpoints-you're obviously out to kill the other team & the fluff isn't there either. Just what incentive are you offering to your opponent to take the match?
Also, how come you haven't played vs. Nurgle or Chaos(1 match)? Pretty sure that would be an easy match up to find yet you've managed to play 4 times vs. goblins & 2 vs. halflings...is it a bash team that refuses to play vs. other bash teams?
Posted by NerdBird on 2015-12-29 05:05:32
To sum up your blog entry:

"People will not give me cherries so I can kill all their menz!"
Posted by asteflix on 2015-12-29 05:19:19
Thanks a lot for all of your feedback , and whilst it is true that my team bio+ development is not helping, i am currently training my elves in Cyanide BloodBowl , just not confident enough to bring them to fumbbl where coaches are better :)
Posted by asteflix on 2015-12-29 05:23:36
To sum up my problem ,

I like to play Box-like teams , but cannot play Box due to the lack of players. So I am forced to play in Ranked where teams do not my against the team that is Box-like
Posted by zakatan on 2015-12-29 06:02:58
A lot of people play R because they don't like the B meta. So yeah, bringing the B meta to R might result in not getting many games.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2015-12-29 06:08:01
Yes, that is the problem. However you are looking at it from a skewed angle. Basically; Box doesn't allow game dodging. This has meant that players can build teams how they like. This is the unhealthy part of box, some of the team building. So instead of looking at it like that's the way teams should be built and it's the dodgers of ranked avoiding it. Look at it the other way, where that style of team building (ok yours isn't awful) isn't good for the game and shouldn't get games.

Looking at Box builds and thinking this is the norm, is the problem here. If you want games in ranked, build healthier all round teams. Or if you want to follow in the Darkbones tracks, then you need a nifty theme team.

@Asteflix,
I understand the desire to play killer teams in Ranked, but it makes it a LOT harder to get matches. If you still want Ranked matches with your killer teams, I'd suggest applying for any of the scheduled Smacks.
Posted by awambawamb on 2015-12-29 08:58:29
You could try entering a league where you WILL get games, probably one per week, and you are free to build the team the way you want while still getting games.
feel free to ask for a place in KPL (tomb guardians with non-secret SAWS, +1 to foul, spiked ball, Ag3 or 4 skeletons, gangfouling) or in the NSL (no player retirement, randomly assigned race) HUBBA, OBBA, OLC or some other big group... be carful of the house rules tho, most are fine tuned to lure the unaware in hilarious positions.
Posted by JigerJones on 2015-12-29 09:23:58
The thing I have noticed is some of the bashy teams won't play other bashy type teams. I enjoy using bashy teams too, especially my Chaos cause I want to get them built toward a tourney run. I usually end up taking a bad matchup with another of my teams cause I am impatient. Some seem willing to sit on GF for hours waiting on the "right" game. Which reminds me of the old game finding system somewhat lol
Posted by Timetis on 2015-12-29 09:31:23
I find it surprising the general consensus (thank nuffle there is also harvestmouse) here seems to be, heck, even what we teach newer coaches, that it is actually FINE to bring bs /just kill teams to the box.

Using terms as "box-like", "I've learned to keep my cpombers in the box" really tick me off. Box is luckily much more than "dank killteams" hammering into one another.

Getting games more easily shouldn't be a reason to play something that's just fun for one player.
Posted by Timetis on 2015-12-29 09:35:59
So, bring those elves to the box, put up a fifteen man chaos team with a fun theme.

To get games people need to want to play you.

Take it as a cue when they don't that its the way you build your teams, and not the way in which games are arranged that is the issue here.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2015-12-29 11:02:17
Unfortunately it's true though Timetis. Box suffers due to the lameness of R coaches.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2015-12-29 11:34:53
Well of course there is truth in that. Both divisions have their problems.
Posted by zhraia on 2015-12-29 11:34:55
Drop your coach ranking to 145, make a hafling team without trees, write "will play dwarfs" and "will not use inducements" in your bio, and watch the fun match ups roll in.

Or just play a few different teams in both B and R
Posted by Harad on 2015-12-29 11:58:19
You say you like to play box like teams? Like high elves? Or pro elves? These teams are in the box :)
What I think you mean is that you like to play heavy bash. You can get games against these teams too in ranked. My heavy bash teams will be happy to play yours. I imagine you wouldn't accept as my teams are stronger and I wouldn't blame you. The difficulty normally is that people want to play heavy bash against a less heavy bash team.
I would estimate I get 20 offers of games my opponents wouldn't accept for every one that they would.
Posted by ianuk77 on 2015-12-29 12:39:40
I play for fun and I mostly lose anyway. So as it takes an hour or so out of my day per game I can't see the benefit of playing a team like this, I get nothing from it. Just seems to my admittedly noob mind that you just want to stamp on other people's sandcastles whilst they watch.

Here is your main issue. You play at North America night time hours.

#1 Ranked play only has a very small # of coaches on GF at any one time, they see bash and they most likely just turn it down straight up.

#2 Box is dead. You will be lucky to find 2 coaches in que on any activation.

SO, what do you do?

Well, if your schedule allows it you need to play at around 2-6PM Central US time, that way you are activating or looking at prime night time hours for Europe. That will help a lot.

IF

You like to play heavy bash, well, then you need to apply for Scheduled Smacks or Black Box Brawls. BUT that means you most likely will be matched up against Euro players so once again you have a time zone issue.

Bottom Line

North American players I have found are heavy League coaches and that is where you need to go to find constant game action. Also I find that the loudest group of coaches who bitch and moan about R/B/CRP/CPOMB and life are mainly found in North America. Thus the league focus in North America.

I get quite a lot of Box matches in my time zone and I play the same hours as this gentleman. I follow MrT's suit and just hit his forum post "Box NA is a Go Go" or something to that fact and then people jump right in. Saying its dead is incorrect, when it flourishes for the ones using it. I don't play every night, but I go on there and watch part of a match every night. I rarely watch Ranked, because all I see is <Star+playing >Experienced. The games are boring to watch.

Now towards playing, start a Ranked Forum that says you are looking for a bashy game and I'm sure some of the same minded people may come from Box and challenge your team. Otherwise join us and just hit MrTs forum post. The hard core Box guys barely ever activate in the Ranked Gamefinder. We get less games in there than in Box.

On the next note: I think it's time to start an instant Smack in the NA time zones. I'll start a forum post about it sometime tonight.

when people complain about gf it's usually because they've forgotten the world doesn't revolve around them. As previously mentioned, the problem with GF is that it's doing its job...filtering out BS games.

You have to offer your opponent a reason to play you. they are not your Teddy Ruxpin Bear.
Posted by Roland on 2015-12-29 20:16:50
This is not just a problem for killer chaos, my orcs with no PO and only two MB rarely get games at all.
And they don't even have a good winning record!

Reality suffers from not every coach being as fantastic as Jimmy.

I suggest you enter a Box team in the minor (Black Box Brawl) that is scheduled every Wednesday around 22:00ish server time.

PM your opponent & arrange a time to play that suits you both.

For an added bonus, sign up as many teams as you think you can safely play in one week. It's possible that some or even all of them may draw a match. With some work, your week of games, using your favorite teams, will be booked up.

As Keggie said, hit up the North American Black Box thread and GO GO GO.
Posted by Uedder on 2015-12-29 23:42:14
Gotta be patient with gamefinder.

I don't think your chaos team is that bad. In fact, I played it with my high elves.

I would also be more than happy to play it with goblins or halflings.
Posted by BillBrasky on 2015-12-30 03:09:25
Kinda looks like you only activated once.

Your peak time was pretty good tonight (December 30 around 01:00 server time)
