European Friends
Dear European Friends,
I'm sorry, it turns out us Brits are bigoted, racist, self obsessed and totally stupid to the point that idiot politicians claiming "our Independence Day" actually get voted for.
I hope this won't lead to Brits being kicked out of leagues but I understand if it does, I hope we'll still be allowed to play in your tt tournaments and you'll want to play in ours.
Sorry again, I truly am.
I like Europe I think there's lots of groovy things going on there, and was planning a huge tour when retired but looks like that will be more difficult now too.

Very sad times

If you have any strong feelings on the subject I wish you would share them. ;)
Posted by ttorvatn on 2016-06-24 08:46:23
Don't worry. The establishment, the politicians and the technocrats will find ways to subdue the opinions of mere voters, or at the very least a way to get around the problem they represent...;)
Posted by Cloggy on 2016-06-24 08:52:58
That's exactly the kind of thinking that led to this disastrous vote ttorvatn. People feeling threatened and unheard being encouraged to feel even more so by politicians who don't give a damn about the good of the population as long as they gain some power.

Looking forward to the next Scottish referendum now. I'll bet they are now wishing they'd had the sense to leave the UK :)

Rated 6, wished you would've given that speech yesterday. :)
Posted by Badoek on 2016-06-24 09:14:36
hissa, being a bit over-dramatic there.

Let's see how bad it's going to hurt. But first the actual leaving has to be negotiated. When Greenland left, that took a few years so we're in for a treat. Especially since Greenland is an overseas territory so can still use their connection to Denmark to access the EU-market, which isn't the case for the UK.
Posted by hissa-lives on 2016-06-24 09:59:30
I'd just have liked to have been part of the reforms that were hinted at in the last few days, bit too little too late for us and hope that the rest of Europe gets benefit from any reforms. Hopefully we will be sensible enough to negotiate properly, cause you know, more expensive miniatures is something nobody wants! ;-)

Posted by Medon on 2016-06-24 10:38:30
Screw economics. We human beings should be more than some mindless ants in an economic hive. Idealistic arguments are way more important than economic ones. But also from an idealistic point of view you Brits were more than welcome to stay in the union and contribute :-) (by the way, what will be the next step, will Scotland 'Scexit' the UK and join the EU? And Northern Ireland?)
Posted by hissa-lives on 2016-06-24 11:01:26
2016 has been a total a***hole of a year, far as I'm concerned it can just end already

Posted by koadah on 2016-06-24 11:23:27
But to be honest, calling people racist & bigoted because they want to control immigration just shows that you don't know jack shit about racism.

For sure, there are loads of racist and bigoted people around but don't be such an idiot.
Posted by hissa-lives on 2016-06-24 11:30:37
@Koadah, it's ok that bit was tongue in cheek. Most people aren't like that and it was a very small majority, I think it swung that was because of mis-information areound migration and the whole £350m a week rubbish. Shame but we have to live with the decision. A trump-johnson alliance in the world can only be a bad thing!
Posted by koadah on 2016-06-24 11:48:00
A bit tongue in cheek but that is pretty much what the remain campaign were trying to tell us.
Posted by Wreckage on 2016-06-24 12:24:03
Uhm, migration control is THE core demand of any racist.

And it is usually accompanied with very little understanding about actual migratory numbers and driven by abstract and mindless fear. It seems especially fitting in a case like this where Britain didn't play its part as so often in the supernatural body it is/was part of, never helped to mitigate the refugee situation in Greece and Italy, not even in regard to the refugees from countries they are currently fighting wars in and anyways wasn't going to either in the future. Just as it has never done anything not out of self-interest.

In light of that how can the argument of refugees invading Britain be described any differently than racist and bigoted? It's not true, but it is always a fine argument for a racist who prefers to be among people who are exactly like him. And yes sure if you have such an overwhelming abstract fear of foreigners, if THAT was the reason you voted for the Brexit because of the refugee crisis it very much makes you a racist.

I see this as one big "f*ck you" to greedy and narrowminded politicians, who for some years has stopped listening to the voters and do what ever they want to in their own little palace of opinion.
Uncertain times are ahead, but trade will continue, as both Britain and EU need eachother for that.
Only time will tell what is up next. (A Danish exit aswell I hope!)

@cloggy.. hope you noticed the smiley... I have a lot of opinions about this, so send me a PM if you or anyone else want to discuss this in more detail, as I will be more than happy to share my thoughts, and also love to hear anyone elses :)

And just to refer to the original blog, I think we definitely should not throw the Brits out of any Leagues, but maybe this could occasion them being given some smaller disadvantages? Forced to play the game without looking at the Board, perhaps... ;) I play in Leagues with brits I have lost to more than once, so... just kidding, of course :)

I love to play you all; Brits or not, pro or against EU and whatever other political positions you have :)

I do find it strange how anyone voting has been labelled a racist, but then some people seek to intimidate and belittle anyone that doesn't agree with their view point.

Europe (led in part by Germany) has made many mistakes and some of those mistakes have been economic. Personally, I would prefer the UK to be able to deal with it's own issues as it needs to.

So, if people prefer (for their own sanity) to believe I am racist for wanting the UK to take back control and maintain it's own army, it's own financial policies and it's own laws, then I believe that says more about those individuals then it does about me.
Posted by Medon on 2016-06-24 14:51:31
Why should the Welsh, Irish and Scots obey the laws of the Brits? Take back control. It's time for an Eyrxit, Welxit and Scoxit. And why should Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle listen to London laws? It's time to take back control! Time for a Manchexit, Leexit and Newxit as well! Back to the Feodal system of many kingdoms. The people were only really in control back then in the year 999. Until that king Arthur united the whole bunch. He probably was of German ancestry too.
Posted by Brainsaw on 2016-06-24 15:29:23
Thats exactly it: People were NEVER in control!

The most important aspect about the EU is the Peace Keeping one. No one can deny that. If the EU fails, we will sooner or later face other problems than economic or idealistic ones.
Posted by Arktoris on 2016-06-24 17:48:30
relax.

Britain was a very successful nation before the EU, it'll be successful after it. Just follow your grandparents on how they did things.
Posted by hissa-lives on 2016-06-24 18:13:21
Guaranteed to cheer me up, no internet, no telly, everything rationed, fear of being blown up every day, lights out after dark, no money, I think I'd rather not do things how my grandparents did if it's all the same thanks. I'd prefer to learn from those mistakes and move to working together and be excellent to each other! :-)
Actually that has relaxed me a bit!
Posted by PurpleChest on 2016-06-24 18:27:35
The problem is if i follow how my grandfather did things I need to join the army, invade india and steal its natural resources, using them to shore up the Uk economy.

I'm pretty sure India isnt going to let me do that again.

Definition of Racism

"the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

•prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

******************

So wanting immigration reform or shutting down immigration is not racist based on the definition. You could say it is xenophobic or bigoted or stupid or prejudice but it is not Racist to say to stop immigration.

Anti immigration arguments are mainly rooted in cultural issues of what ever country we are speaking of. Some countries immigration is a national security issue and a cultural issue.
Posted by thoralf on 2016-06-24 18:36:25
And what's your definition of culture, PainState?

I hope you do realize where this is going.
Posted by PainState on 2016-06-24 18:37:19
Definition of Culture

"
the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time

2

: a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc."

Posted by Silent_Hastati on 2016-06-24 18:50:41
As an American, I'll just warn you that immediatly calling your political opposition racist, bigoted, short sighted, and so on instead of actually understanding their reasons is how you end up with a system as broken as ours.
Posted by thoralf on 2016-06-24 18:55:22
So the word "racism" is incorrect because we'd need to invent the word "culturism."

Fascinating.

Now, what's your definition of religion, Painstate?
Posted by thoralf on 2016-06-24 18:57:51
Oh, and as a Canadian, I'll just warn that UK is older than the US of A, and may very have invented concern trolling as a foreign policy.
Posted by PainState on 2016-06-24 18:58:23
Well, at this point thoralf I leave it up to you to answer you own questions.

Here is how I did it. I checked Websters online dictionary and copied and pasted the answer.

So I leave it to you to finish this off.
Posted by thoralf on 2016-06-24 19:08:54
My pleasure, Painstate. Compare and contrast:

(1) The beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time

(2) an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group

The first is the definition you picked from the Webster for "culture" and the second is the one I picked for "religion."

Sometimes, it's hard to distinguish race, culture, and religion.

But yeah, "xenophobic" would have been more accurate.
Posted by Jeffro on 2016-06-24 19:33:26
Amen to this clarification, thoralf... I see it all as Nationalism. Same with Trump. I don't think he's racist... I think he's an ignorant Nationalistic buffoon ;D

I might remember well ...

Some things in life are bad they can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewin' on life's gristle, don't grumble give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.

And always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life

I'm very curious about what's going to come.
I mean it seems to me people's votes have so little effect on politics decisions.
For the better or the worse i hope this vote will have a real impact, would be very depressing otherwise.
Posted by Mr_Foulscumm on 2016-06-24 20:42:38
Doesn't Buddha disagrees with your friend. :)

No one knows what will happen. Not a single person. But people like to freak out, so they will. I'll just do my own shit and let them get on with their Chicken Little routine.
Posted by thoralf on 2016-06-24 22:09:47
Nationalism may imply neither xenophobia nor bigotry, Jeffro.

While we could try to correct Sen. Lindsay Graham for accusing teh Donald of “opportunistic race-baiting, bigotry (and) xenophobia,” (which I believe was followed by "other than that he's a good nominee"), the sentiment is conveyed well enough. Countering it with dictionary games would have been silly.

Now, if you excuse me, I still got pounds to short.
Posted by Uedder on 2016-06-25 03:03:37
I wouldn't be overly dramatic. Everyone's welcome in Europe if you want to drop by.

I understand how you're feeling beaten up, but it's not like you're missing the party of the century anyway.

People will keep living their lives and the world will keep spinning. It will just take longer queues at the airport, that's all most likely.

Cheers!

"The problem is if i follow how my grandfather did things I need to join the army, invade india and steal its natural resources, using them to shore up the Uk economy."

as if you haven't been doing that all along? You just swapped India for China and your kids.

Bottomline: GB today is a pale shadow of its former self. And with a birth rate < 2 kids...you're dying off.

so you have a decision. Either cut the crap and evolve into the adults your grandparents were, or just stay on the PC path, let Darwinism finish its course, and vanish.

your decision.

Talking about migration control and racism.

Is it racist to pay bilions of euros to Turkey to give us the Syrians refugees and lock up any other immigrants in camps? I think it is. And that's exactly what the UE is doing.

In no way securing the borders is racist, as long as it's equal for anyone. If it was then every country in the world would be racist, because if I leave the UE without my passport, then I'm not going anywhere.

You sure can let anyone in accross your borders, but you need a PLAN for these people. Help them settle in, have a prospect of life.
Right now they cross the meditarrean risking their lives, if they survive they are locked in some immigration camp (or let on the loose so hopefully they cross our own borders and become someone else's problem) and have no perspective whatsoever, other than to work illegally. Add to that the fact that EU economy isn't exactly flourishing.

When people complain about immigration control it's not plain racism. Sometimes it is, but most times it's "What are we doing? What's the plan?".

So, yes. What's the plan? Looks like there isn't one, and that's why many countries - including France and Germany - closed off their own borders.

You want these people in? You gotta make sure they don't die while coming here and they have a chance at getting a job and mix in our society. Otherwise you're just generating humanitarian tragedies and social tensions for years to come.

Posted by hissa-lives on 2016-06-25 10:34:40
Ok, we can all agree that the EU isn't what it was intended to be, but it is what it is, we deal with this pile of stuff then move onto the next one. Let's unite over a fantastic game and community!
Time to put this to bed now, let's concentrate on fun and frivolity :-)

Posted by uzkulak on 2016-06-25 16:26:47
Yeah, ashamed to be British right now :(

Sadly this referendum has really exposed all the divisions in our society.

The young (under 40s), Scottish, Northern Irish, graduates and Londoners all voted with large majorities to remain in the EU, while (generalising) everyone else voted to leave - also with large majorities. Those divisions have been encouraged by certain aspects of both campaigns and often brought out the worst in people.

Some of the maps are quite striking: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36616028

There is a real danger now of those divisions causing issues - starting with what looks increasingly likely for Scotland leaving the UK and even hundreds of thousands of people signing a petition for London to declare independence! Let alone resentment amonst the young people who already feel let down by the baby boomers generation. Our politicians need to get on top of this and look to reunite our society.
Posted by Mr_Foulscumm on 2016-06-25 21:42:05
Yeah damn those old people that got you in and then got you out. Damn them all!

That being said: Britain is the 2nd largest economy in Europe, so why could it never managed on its own (where on its own equals still being part of the world). People need to take a shill pill. It's not like the EU has ever been a shining beacon of democracy. You'll be fine. :)
