Age of Sigmar
Has anyone tried this yet?

In an unprecedented move (for GW) they've decided to release all the rules for free.

The pre-orders on the boxed set are available and it looks like it's Space Marines vs Chaos Space Marines again. Wait a minute...

I've read through the rules and a couple of the War Scrolls, so here are my first thoughts:
1) It's definitely not, and is far too simplistic to be, Warhammer. To this end I think 8th editions will be Warhammer's CRP. It could have happened to worse editions to be fair, I quite like 8th.
2) It might actually be fun in it's own right. I think it could be a pretty good story-telling game. Quite good for quick campaigns. and short encounters.

I still think it's a strange decision though, not to replace Warhammer so much as to replace it with this. It's not even Medieval 40k. There's a pretty long-standing tradition of 40k being their 'entry' game and more adult players playing Warhammer. It's like they took their most complex game and re-positioned it below 40k as 'super accessible easy to understand game' and now 40k will be the more grown-up of the 2. Age of Sigmar has a massive 4 pages of rules, and about some of that is taken up with mostly useless tables for terrain features, triumphs, diagrams showing how to split a table in half etc. I think it takes 'rules light' to a whole other level.

I'm hoping to give it a go in the next few weeks, so I'll try and post some feedback after that.

I think it's at least worth a read, if only because GW are giving something away :D

When you write "Warhammer" you mean Warhammer fantasy battle, and not the RPG (originally a figure fighting system) right?

Gw is dead for me ,the last good warhammer was 5th edition .Stick with Man o War and Titan legions thats the real gems in my playbook. And the prices for the new minis are just silly.

Heh. I've seen that before, but it still made me laugh. And yes I mean WFB.

I find it funny also that this clearly divisive topic has 3 comments and no ratings :D

There, I rated AoS, not this blog :)

It seems it is now a skirmish or smaller army game. Strange. Apparently formation or base size no longer matters either. Warhammer FB sales must really have been declining to go so drastic and go against the old core gamers.

Some of the new Empire and Chaos models do look a bit 40k esque but without the guns. Oh reading further I see it is not even set on the Warhammer World... The old 40k history does not make sense if this stuff is meant to be on the same timeline. Before they were always totally separate.
Wow and there is now only 4 factions so all sorts of races can fight together. Could be fun but certainly will give less uniform armies.

I'll let everyone know a little secret, ...I have no idea about anything to do with Warhammer, 40K, Space Marines or this Age of Sigmar stuff. And that makes me happy.

I just glanced at the rules and haven't looked at the armies, but it seems pretty similar to the Hobbit/LotR game GW makes. That's a huge departure from "traditional" warhammer but not really a bad thing. I think the Hobbit is GW's best (currently supported) game.

The game plays horribly. It should really be named "Age of All Menz Group Hug".

It's an Only Once game.

Command Ability: Everyone Has Their Price
If Greasus Goldtooth uses this ability, select an enemy unit anywhere on the battlefield and choose one of the effects listed below:
- The unit cannot move in its next turn.
- The unit cannot move, attack or cast spells in its next turn.
- All models in the unit immediately flee.
- The unit changes sides and immediately comes under your control.

Then, offer your opponent a bribe (this can be anything you want to offer). If your opponent accepts your bribe, the chosen effect takes place – otherwise, nothing happens. Players are free to haggle over the offered bribe, or propose a counter-offer...

I foresee this will degenerate... errr....

There's also the one where you have to pretend to ride an imaginary horse to get re-rolls to hit.

One where you have to dance to get a re-roll to hit (if you get your opponent to dance as well you get to re-roll the wound as well).

One where you have to talk to the miniature to get a re-roll to hit (if it talks back you also get a re-roll to wound).

Faithweaver can change a dice roll to anything you want.

etc, etc.

All the old armies are pretty much there as a joke.

I wonder how long it will take for some knucklehead suggests we need to keep up with the times and adapt to the 'new style'?

The thing you have to remember with these games, is that a playerbase ages and can be replaced. Imagine the playerbase is a jug of Belgian ale but there is no more Belgian Ale left to replace what is drunk, we'll have to top it up with Special Brew instead. At first it's a Belgian Ale and the Belgian Ale will complain about having special brew in it. However the longer time goes on and the less Ale that's left, the less the complaints will be heard.

So if GW can survive the original backlash, they can dilute the complaints until it's just old men grumbling. We've seen it time and time again, even here.

For me the biggest problem with Warhammer, was the pricing. When it started, figures were cheap, but really nice. So you could build armies for not so much of an outlay. Massive price hikes, the refusal to cheaper but toxic metals (due to companies having to be more responsible and taking the age restriction off of blisters) meant more price hikes. Simply meaning building the big armies that was Warhammer meant an outlay similar to buying a cheap car.....ridiculous.

We can still buy historical figures pretty cheaply. I always felt that warhammer should have been in 20mm, you still have the detail at this size, and with the talents over at citadel, I'm sure they could have produced some amazing stuff. I think too many people have just lost interest in it.

So, in recent times stuff has become crazier and crazier as they tried to lure the punters in with the wacky. I'll guess we'll just have to see what happens now. It'll be a hard pill to swallow for the dedicated WFB players, that's for sure.

On a truely selfish note, I'm annoyed on two levels:
1) I have in the last year or so been collecting a high elf army and very slowly painting them... More for realising a childhood ambition of doing so and improving my painting ability as I go...
2) combine that fact that I've never actually played a game of Warhammer Fantasy Battle and seemingly never will now :(

I did buy the island of blood rule book and high elf army book on eBay before I was even aware of all this AoS stuff so I could potentially play one day. I suppose I just got lulled into the idea that it would always be there to play. I should have known as Specialist games were ditched by GW so Blood bowl lives on for me here and in the occasional Naf tournament.

Makes me wonder, interest in bloodbowl increased when Cyanide launched... And new coaches came here, capturing a new generation, but where will players go when Warhammer Total War comes out? Think they will go play AoS?

Then again, instead of AoS we could have had news that GW had gone bankrupt and see nothing ever again. Maybe another company would have gained the rights to Warhammer FB... Hmmm.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2015-07-08 08:43:44
Well..........we might be at an age where a set of rules with various lists through out the ages will be produced independently. Not so much a competitive set, but a set for everybody to dust off their WFB miniatures and enjoy a game together. I'd like to see that.

Finally read the rules. Man are they terrible. No point values? Fail.
Posted by mister__joshua on 2015-07-08 12:28:06
I'm hoping that with Age of Sigmar's release Creative Assembly will have free reign over 'Old Warhammer' for the Total War games. As much as I enjoy Warhammer I'm totally fine with Total War becoming the definitive Warhammer world experience. I think they could do a great job with it.
Posted by MattDakka on 2015-07-08 15:23:51
@Wotfudboy: if you have like-minded friends to play with, you can ever play WHFB 8th edition.
Even Blood Bowl is no more supported but people still play it, you could also play Mordheim, Kings of War or Warhammer Total War online.
I feel your frustration, I would be very upset if while collecting an army suddenly GW stopped making WHFB.
Posted by Mr_Foulscumm on 2015-07-08 17:07:14
Aye, people who play Blood Bowl shouldn't really get all to worried about a game "dying". I'll keep playing 8th, because I enjoy it. :)
Posted by garyt1 on 2015-07-08 21:25:16
No points values? How do you decide how much to use in a battle?
Oh my, it's by ranked style picking except if you turn up to a club for a game you would be at the mercy of whoever is around and how fair they/you are.

They've been going through corporate turmoil and I'm guessing this is their hail mary when it comes to keeping up the (franchise, I think) model they currently have. The internet's rise to predominance (for sales and gaming), the drop in disposable income, it's been a crap decade or two for'em.

Also their talent can now leave and compete once they make a name for themselves, because start up costs are so low.
