Describe NaggarothNightwings here.
Like the Middenheim Marauders and the Dwarf Warhammerers, the Nightwings are a franchise that has suffered a split. However, where the previously 2 mentioned franchises split duly to the collapse of the NAF and the rise of the touring scene, this was only partly to blame for the downsizing of the Nightwings.
Originally, the school of thought with Dark Elven teams, was to play a similar style to other Elven teams. This was only natural, as when the race was young, there was very little difference between the 2 races. However as the race changed and developed a bitter and twisted character of it's own, so the Blood Bowl style compensated for this.
At first, it was noticeable that Dark Elf teams started to increase the amount of blitzers that played. Preferring a bloodier and heavier form on Blood Bowl, compared to their fair hearted cousins, this was only natural. Then slowly and slightly controversially catchers were dropped and throwers started to be replaced by runners on a lot of teams.
This was only true for some teams however, some wished (like the cowboys) to continue with throwers and catchers, where some (like a smaller, new franchise also based in Naggaroth) wished to go even further, and totally revolutionise the Dark Elf play style, by adding assassins and witch elves.
The fact this small franchise was also based in Naggaroth, lead to tension with the Nightwings. The Nightwings are extremely old school, and the new franchise, very revolutionary. The Nightwings' hadn't changed their play style at all, and they had the same formation (2 throwers/4 catchers/2 blitzers) as the very first Dark Elf teams all that time ago. This was seen by many (and all outside the large city of Naggaroth) to be repulsive as a stereo typical good elf way of playing, rather than the original Dark Elf way.
This lead to rather heretical and misanthropic propaganda campaign that the Nightwings were actually High Elves in hiding, a petty slur made up by rival franchises to damage their fanbase. The unfounded tabloid slander did it's job though, and the Nightwings fanbase and purses were hit hard.
The 2 big gainers from this were their arch rivals, the Darkside Cowboys (whose style is rather conventional itself, but is accepted due their blood thirsty nature) and the younger, smaller Naggaroth franchise. A large part of the Naggaroth Nightwings supporters and sponsors (some say as much as 60%) became disillusioned with the Nightwings and went to support the newer franchise. To rub salt further into the wound, the newer franchise renamed themselves 'Naggaroth Nightmares; Naggaroth's premier Blood Bowl team'.
Although disastrous, this wasn't a killer blow for the Nightwings though, as the huge steepled city of Naggaroth is plenty big enough for 2 franchises, and being in the high profile NAF kept them as the better team according to pundits. This all changed though, with the collapse of the NAF. The newer Nightmares grabbed at the chance to join the independent touring circuit, and just as they are traditional in their team make up and play style, so are their views on where to game. It was inevitable that the stuck in their ways Nightwings, of course stayed in the struggling NAF, and the owned stadium structure. Where as always the revolutionaries; the Nightmares sold their stadium to the city and leapt out into the new world of professional touring and city based tournament circuit.
The rest is of course history. The NAF has faltered with lack of funds and trust, where as the Touring scene has grown in popularity, and with that the so has the coin flipped for the revolutionaries and the traditionalists of Naggaroth. The Nightmares fortunes have skyrocketed, and the Nightwings are no longer considered the top tier team they once were.
(note to self, in the nightmares section add 'and with that the nightmares truly did become nightmares (for the nightwings).
