I love pro elves too, and have come to appreciate them much more than dark or wood elves. The lineman discount is pretty insignificant. Although it allows you to run a deep, unskilled roster fairly cheaply (that's nice!), the positionals are expensive and you quickly make up the difference in linemen with the catchers and blitzers. Compared to high elves, for example, if you have 2 blitzers and 4 catchers then you save 60k, which is enough for 6 linemen. So maybe you have 7 linemen on your pro elf team and you've saved 10k.
There is also the eventual fact that, once your linos hit two skills, you're still only saving 10k and you're losing out on important stats. This is especially noticeable compared to wood elves; 110k for 7347 blodge, or 100k for 6347 blodge? No brainer.
Pro elves really shine in the mega stars with chumps format. The linemen suffer but the positionals benefit. It's easier than with any other elf team to run a deep bench, and with 1 skill pro elf linemen really shine compared to other elves. For 80k you can have an elf with kick, dirty player, dodge, wrestle, or strip ball. Since pro elf linemen rarely last past their first skill, they're a pretty good deal most of the time. More than any other elf team you can afford to roster 14 including 2 dirty players, which can really help keep the numbers more even.
It's often said that pro elves excel at offense but fail in defense. I think this isn't true. The same things that make them good at offense - high ma, NoS, catch, ss blitzers - also make them custom built to score on defense. Blitzers easily build to be annoying, ss into cages and dt or guard the ball. Catchers are so good at scoring that you can forgo the usual blodge/ss for wrestle, tackle, strip, and/or leap builds. NoS is the kind of skill that you always want to have but never want to take on a skill roll, and in combination with catch means that when you do get that one chance at the ball on defense, you often have the means to toss it to safety (with nos on the pass and the catch) and then run it out of reach.
Starting with NoS and catch also benefits catchers because of their blitzer like qualities. It's a rare situation where you confidently pass to your 1-2 man marked blitzer and then blitz with him to score.
Ultimately playing pro elves is about pacing, evaluation, and keeping calm in the midst of rampant ko's and/or casualties. If you play a tight game (I think of it as conservatively aggressive) you will rarely find that you are completely overwhelmed. If you position skillfully, one turn of good luck for you (or bad luck for your opponent) will find you up 2-0 on turn 4. |

1) Because not everyone had a chance to say what they wanted about this topic.
2) FUMBBL discourages starting a New Thread when there is already an Existing Thread on a subject.
3) To make you freak out over the most insignificant things.
4) Don't read it if you don't like it... and don't post in it if you want it to die.
Like Araz says... you are only making it worse. |

Other than the chaos-related teams, pro-elves are the only other team I have filled the box grid with thus far.
I enjoyed the cheap linos, and the dumpoff-nos combos. |

Pro Elves are the best bbteam considering scoring and passing even better than their wood elf cousins. But they start out without any blodge and a lot of av7 players which makes this team fragile.
And nobody is considering the box a place to play fragile teams. |

Which is bizzare, because Box is the easiest place to win with fragile teams! |

Actually, a lot of people see the value in trying to develop AV7 teams to counter high claw-teams. They just usually get discouraged by the sea of dwarf <1500 somewhere along the way. =) |
