The database server for FUMBBL (Borak) has grown old. More specifically, it was built in February of 2007. For a while now, I've been considering setting up a donation drive in order to gather enough funds to buy a replacement server. The idea is to build a replacement server before the current one breaks.
Now, being a database server, it's server that benefits most from CPU power, storage and memory. This, of course, means that it's more expensive than the other servers. In terms of power usage, Borak currently draws roughly double the power of any of the other servers.
Now, given the cost of replacing the server (my estimate is at around $2500 or so, varying a bit depending on configuration), I would like to offer some sort of incentive to those who would participate in a donation drive. This is where this thread comes in. I'd like to hear some ideas from you guys regarding what you would like in terms of incentive.
Now, given that merchandise is really complicated and not really profitable (none of the previous merch things have been profitable overall), I'd like to avoid making new things to send out (fees, taxes and shipping costs are pretty bad).
For those of you who are interested in hardware, I'm also open for suggestions on components close to roughly $2k in total cost (25% VAT in Sweden makes computer hardware expensive here). I'm mainly looking to build the server from parts on my own in order to keep noise down to a minimum. The machine must have redundant storage (I'm looking at a pair of small mirrored SSDs for system, and redundant drives for storage, 4TB total usable space minimum).

I would love an additional potion. 50 bucks ought to do it right?
Additionally, I love raffles. Depending on the laws concerning raffles where you live, you could raffle off some of the more 'OP' things like Sponges and Stones and whatnot where each dollar donated is an entry for the grand prize. |

oh agreed.
I would pay MUCH for a resurrection stone (I would bring back The Duke, from OBBA), but I think that would be TOO powerful. Dead is dead, and should remain so; there has to be some ultimate player risk. I like the potions and sponges, as they are not a total failsafe.
A a League player, I love the special players that one gets in KPL (for example), but I think we should limit the number of them in R or B, so we don't want to do a "everyone gets a uber-lizard-guardian-beast" type of donation drive.
Serious suggestion
The NAF crossover tournies have brought in a lot of new players to fumbbl, so perhaps a donation drive in connection with a NAF/fumbbl tourny?
Not sure what this would entail (a donation to enter a tournament? a donation to get something or other?), but this is an audience that is likely less familiar with the fumbbl-donation culture, and something that gets the new players on board would be useful. |

Potions=donations simples. However, what about donate a large sum and vote on your choice of custom teams for League? I can help out at all points there if needed. |

There is a possibility of me having a few finished versions of the Recordopedia Spluttanica - CRP edition, which I will pay for and post to the 5 biggest donors(printing costs prohibit me spending more as I'm also saving for our wedding next year), if that would help. |
