It must be done
Hello peeps,

Can I tell you a story? I wont go on too long.

Ive played Bloodbowl since 3rd edition was released, took a massive sebatical and stumbbled across FUMBBL after a 15ish year hiatus.

Ive always played Woodies but seeing as it had been so long, decided to play a team that was a little more bashy. Saw that the roster included Pact teams and was instantly inspired, Ive always liked the idea of mixed race teams so grabbed the chance.

The first thing I noticed was that my mates and I were clearly terrible coaches back in the day and that the game has moved and evolved so far since the Death Zone supplement was released. I was clearly nieve to believe that I would be able to compete after such a long absence, against such seasoned coaches and with a team that is as dis-advantaged as Pact.

None the less, I have endured and am becoming a better coach despite all these things or at least thats what I keep telling myself.

It has got to the stage however that I am starting to believe that I am doing something fundamentaly wrong. Ive played nearly 30ish games so am no longer a stranger to the format, I have a team that is for all intents and purposes pretty well skilled ( I believe) and done plenty of research on line in general and on site through the forum with regards to TV strategy, in game tactics skill selection etc etc.

If anybody has any pearls of wisdom, hard nosed advice or scathing critisism I would welcome the help.

It seemed I did go on a bit.

Cheers

3 big guy pact are awful. Stick with the undeads for a while.

Just replayed a couple of your last games.

Don't get too disheartened, you were lucked on from a great height in both of them (as I'm sure you know!). Some things to improve performance though:

1) STOP PASSING. In both games, you made a 4+ pass(with a pass reroll) to get the ball into the cage. Against the flings, you got away with it, against the necro, a lucky clear gave him the game. Just run the ball in...at least if you miss the handoff, it's surrounded by your players. If you have to pass, ensure it's at least a 3+.

2) Watch contact. You are only AV 8...leaving your entire team in contact to draw blocks could end up in some early KO's, which until you have 12 players will decide games.

3)On a similar vein, you have 11 players. Each one of those players is precious. Turn 8 foul with a loner cost you a player, at a point where you were 2-0 down and *really* needed to score twice in quick succession.

4) Plan for failure. Your tactics are fine, assuming you don't double skull/bd+double skull. The problem is, you don't have a backup plan, the turn order. Double skulls do happen, and when they come, they will lose you a game. Think before you block, think of the consequences of failing. If there's nothing you can do, great, but if there is a way to protect against failure, do it.

5) As the others say, 3 big guy pact suck royally. They are a fun team, but if you want a good winning record, drop a big guy(the mino), or play a different team.

Well you have the right attitude, so I think you'll be fine. I was in exactly the same position as you. A long lay off, and expecting to do better than I did.

With your record, obviously there are big fundamental problems with your game. However look at it like this; the perfect BB coach is a perfectly smooth ball, and you start out as a cube. Just look at the cube and keep knocking off the biggest edge. Sooner or later, you'll end up with something roundish.

Looking at your team, I think it's alright. 3 big guys can work, and as 2 of yours have block, I wouldn't oik them. The mino is the worst of the 3, and on your team he's the one with the best skills so...

Your skill choices have mainly been good. Pile on on the troll was a mistake I think, and pass on a marauder. He should go at some point in the near future.

Hey Dude fun game yesterday that should have been a win for you or at least a tie. Couple of things from playing you. Hitonagashi is right NEVER PASS unless its a last ditch atempt turn 8. All other times cage ur ball carrier and then hand off if absolutely necessary to another cage but with pact much better to pickup with the elf and run ALLLLLL the way to the end in a cage.

Secondly Positioning do all your none dice rolls first stand players up move into position assume your going to fail ALL dice rolls then start.

Dont relly on Big guys they suck there expensive and unreliable Keep them if you want but use them as road blocks more than players.

LEARN THE ODDS several times you complained that you had thrown x or y number of blocks against my flings and not caused cas. On a 2 d block against a player with dodge if you dont have block urself you will only take the fling down 11/36 times thats less than 1/3. Make the 3 d blocks preferable with some block. Then you chances go waaaay up.

There were other times where you were making 2 d blocks when there were more important less risky moves also. 2 d block will fail and you will go down 1/9 that dosent seem like much but its alot.

PAY ATTENTION: :D not useing a rr on a fling that was standing next to the td line was madness. You ogre kept useing stand firm to stay next to a tree that had taken root. Missing that the block/claw player was the best chance at felling the trees not the 1d blitz with no block on the block tree from the loner MINO :D

STALL. i know i guilted u into the early TD but you should say F u dude its part of the game. U should have caged that badboy up and gone fling hunting. As soon as i saw i had 3-4 turns to score i knew that as long as i did a slow drive the next half i could take 7-8 turns getting the td leaving you only 1 or 2 to score.

I know this is tough but you did ask. You right your fundementals are there but as you said in game "you dont want to play clawpomb" well then pact is not the team for you.

I know woodies are squishy but there are av8 elves out there they are as squishy as your mauraders and with all there ag 4 might be better suited to your play style.

Last note. Play lots of teams not just pact. The best way to learn how to beat a team is learning how to play with them only then do you realise where there glaring faults are.

Good luck dont be disheartened 1,200 games in and i only just recently broke 50/50 on win loose.

I think Chaos Pact is a really hard team to play well. So trying something else could work well.

Many thanks to everyone who has commented, Im feeling much more enthusiastic and has given me alot to think about.

Im definatly going to spend more time with another team, Undead to start then high or pro elf in a few weeks. (cant decide).

Defo going to drop a big guy as soon as i have cash enough to purchase a new maurader, It makes more sence to have a reliable player thats not picking his nose than a really stupid one laying on the ground. I am considering the Troll as he carries more neg skills and pileon has not proved to be so useful. althoug he did kill a Kroxigor with it! I know that the mino is generaly considered by most as a complete waste but i like him and as he now has block im sure he will prove his worth. leap of faith anyone?

Im still not convinced to embrace turn stalling and clawpombing for many reasons I wont go into here but im sure that Ill come round soon enough. maybe.

Once again, thanks to all who commented, I didnt expect so many articulated and well constructed replies so soon after posting.

Im sure youll hear from me again, especially if I start winning!
