I'd say making BloodBowl about the background and development of your team is a good a reason as any to play.
Many of us aren't going to challenge the major tournaments by continuously winning, so if the story of your team is what brings you contentment, then that's a great place to be

Writing background is fun to do. Keep it up!
Of course you don't know if the player is going to last long or skill well so you might re use the background if they die early..

In case you weren't aware... there's a badge (https://fumbbl.com/note/razmus/Badges2020) for having a character with a 1000 or more words describing a character's backstory...

A big hug and a cold beer for those who give their teams proper back ground.

Writing backgrounds give you a great reason to use the players wisely and not put them needlessly in harms way. For more in depth in sights into the game I strongly suggest looking into the 145 Club where new coaches can find plenty of experienced people to connect with before being unleashed into the wild of Competitive play. (There is currently a Blog about the 145 Club for an easy link.)
Take care.
