FFB Client on Ubuntu 14.04
I've recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 on an old desktop, and tried to run a game. I had OpenJDK 7 installed and got to the screen where it says "blader4411 has entered game", but never proceeded beyond that. Anyone else have better luck playing on Ubuntu with OpenJDK, or is there a way to install Oracle's Java on Ubuntu?

I believe you have to switch the sound of in game to get it to work on Linux. There is a thread about this with answers, search function is your friend ;)

The way I remember it you need Oracle.

open jdk worked for me except the sound.... yeah, i found open jdk in the software center thingy too :) i used the commands in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8wHjmztdwc to install oracle's java, it's a terminal install (i know, yuck), but it's only three lines and about five minutes... the sound worked fine for a game or two and then stopped working... i did a dual install with os x 10.6.8 and ubuntu 14.04, and the first install was botched (i don't think i clicked the install updates option box the first time) so maybe the sound not working has something to do with the bad install. *shrugs* i'm satisfied with it except for the sound issues with video and java... i might try a reformat and reinstall at some point.

You need to reinstall the tape on the bridge of your bi-focals and restore the 3 pounds of hair product to your head. Finally, you should smear lard about your face area to increase the blemish, and blackhead production. If you follow these easy steps, your path to ultimate nerddom will be complete.

I've installed Oracle's Java now, and it works, but there's a white bar going through the bottom of the window where the chatbox is, so I can't chat on it at all. Not sure whats up with that :/

Also @BillBrask: what?

I use Oracle Java and i have the white bar of the bottom. I chat but i can't see what i write.

The white bar is annoying, you can't see the number of RR or apo, but with the mouse on the place of the icon in the white bar appears a little sign with the info.

No sound, too. The worst thing :/

Check the forums. I'm think there is a fix for that.

Here is how to fix it:

Bill is just calling Linux users massive geeks :p it wasn't that subtle really ;)

@bladder: if you don't feel like 'fixing' the white bar, you can left click on the chat display area and then hit tab, like dubiativ said, you can't see what you're typing, but you can chat.

that brasky would be really clever if he weren't such a pathetic drunk.

Grod's post worked for Ubuntu GNOME; doesn't sort things out for Unity but oh well. At least now it works :P

Sound problem is because of "stupid" pulsaudio. If you don't mind missing the volume control in the panel just purge pulseaudio from tour machine. After that everything works fine, at least on my setup.
(you can install Volti package if you really want the volume control in the panel). And Oracle java is the way to go I belive. Check my blog entry to insatll it, and keep it updated via a PPA. Hope this helps :D
