Blitz 'Dem - GDR Edition #2; Issue #1

'Blitz 'Dem', the preeminent periodical for all things Blood Bowl, having been published by diligent grotz since 1964 IC, brings you the key facts from the opening Gameweek of the inaugural season of the Greenskins Draft Rumble.

= GAMEWEEK 1 ROUND-UP =
The second season of the Greenskins Draft Rumble has commenced with plenty of new faces and new franchises competing for the title. And the opening week was just as stunning as the end of the previous season!

= STAR PLAYER POINTS =
There were five players who recorded more than 5 SPP:

6 SPP - Wrath (Iron Crag Claws); Orzog Shugdurbam (Nordland Skullsmasherz); Hazel Nuts (Grom Peak Scrappers)
7 SPP - Moose Groinstamp (Drakwald 'Ardboyz); Dazlug Mudshredda (Altdorf Bloodhounds)

= CASUALTIES =
Not one player managed to inflict more than 1 casualty, which is, on one hand, a sorry state of affairs. On the other, it's nice to see that responsibility being shared across the team.

= BLOCKS =
Seven players delivered 10+ blocks in their games. This suggests some teams are using one heavy hitter and avoiding being in contact with too many opponents.

11 blocks - Ruk Toegrinder (Karak Norn Crusherz); Leg Snapper (Iron Crag Clawz); Head Stompa (Iron Crag Clawz)
12 blocks - Ghazghkull Thraka (Drakwald 'Ardboyz); Arm Snapper (Averland Bat-Squigs); Dakkul Beastmaw; Grotz Eargrinda (both Nordland Skullsmasherz)

= TOUCHDOWNS =
Two players laid down a marker on the scoring charts in Gameweek 1 - Hazel Nuts became the first player to score for two separate franchises! In Season I, he crossed the line 3 times in 3 games for the Badlands Black Feathers, before falling out with the coach and being let go. This Season, for the Grom Peak Scrappers, he scored twice in their opening game. Orzog Shugdurbam scored 2 touchdowns in 2 matches for the Nordland Skullsmasherz and repeated the feat for the third time against Champions Cup holders, Karaz Azgaraz Fanatics.

2 touchdowns - Orzog Shugdurbam (Nordland Skullsmasherz); Hazel Nuts (Grom Peak Scrappers)

= FOULS =
A tentative start here, with just three players committing more than 2 fouls. However, it is worth noting that Mudspitta of the Skullsmasherz managed to kill record SPP scorer and Season I MVP runner-up Journey Ruth. It is bravery and guile like that which will make Mudspitta a legends (or villain) in the annals of the league.

2 fouls - Madelyn Pierce (Karak Norn Crusherz); Borgu Flingbone; Slugg Bonekrakka (both Dragonback Squigs)
3 fouls - Skabzit Mudspitta (Nordland Skullsmasherz)

= RUSHING YARDS =
Eight players surpassed 30 rushing yards in one game, with two setting new league records! Orzog Shugdurbam must have thought he would have eclipsed the 41 yard record set by himself last season, only for Dazlugg Mudshredda of the Bloodhounds to achieve an incredible 50 yards! Well done, that man.

23 yards - Hazel Nuts (Grom Peak Scrappers)
24 yards - Durg Nightfang (Averland Bat-Squigs)
37 yards - Miranda Slender (Tilean Sea Piratz)
44 yards - Orzog Shugdurbam (Nordland Skullsmasherz)
50 yards - Dazlugg Mudshredda (Altdorf Bloodhounds)

= PASSING YARDS =
A single-digit trend continues, with nobody looking likely to surpass the 8 yard record set last season.

3 yards - Grunk Gorefang (Karak Azgaraz Fanatics); Karson Barbo (Karak Norn Crusherz)

= AWARD WINNERS =
Each Gameweek, there will be awards for some notable players and coaches:

MVP
Orzog Shugdurbam has to be pleased with himself. Briefly, increasing his own record for Rushing Yards. Scoring twice in a crucial season opener which saw his Skullsmasherz gain revenge over the Fanatics. All that whilst avoiding a revved up Fanatics, looking for physical retribution for the loss of their own iconic star. Powerful stuff in GW1.

Golden Clipboard
TheRedoubt (Altdorf Bloodhounds)
Coach Redoubt made a strong start to his GDR career with a statement win over the Mount Gunbad Big 'Uns, who are led by the experienced Kozilek. The Bloodhounds managed to win despite conceding in T4 and playing much of the first half with 10 men, after losing Skorhag Facewhakka in T5, but scored in T8 and T16 to see off the threat of the Big 'Uns.

Best Result

MATCHSCORESCORERS
Drakwald 'Ardboyz1'Moose' Groinstamp
Grom Peak Scrappers2Hazel Nuts x2
A strong start for the Scrappers with an opening day win over the Super Shield winners. The Scrappers suffered 2 KOs and a T8 touchdown before earning their own pair of knock-outs and a T14 equaliser. The 'Ardboyz fluffed their lines and Hazel Nuts ran in a clutch buzzer-beater in T17! The 'Ardboyz can take heart from the violence inflicted on their opponents but will rue the way they failed to see out the game.
= IN MEMORIAM =
For every winner, there must be a loser and, to give them their (final) moment in the limelight, we recognise those players who left us this week:

‣ Journey Ruth (Karak Azgaraz Fanatics) - the Nordland Skullsmasherz got their revenge for their defeat in last season Champions Cup Final by eliminating the Fanatics' star Blitzer, a game in which Ruth scored. One of the biggest losses to the league and a blow to the Fanatics hopes of retaining their title.
‣ Carson Moira (Bretonnia Brutes) - the Blitzer committed one block and one foul and then was permanently retired.
‣ Skorhag Facewhakka (Altdorf Bloodhounds) - a rookie Blitzer and the last player to join the roster. Also, the first to leave it.
