The Barrel Brigade was formed by the Honourable Society of the Ring, to remind the other races of Middle Earth of the courage, strength and spirit of hobbits.

It also serves as an avenue for thrilling and dangerous deeds for those young hobbits with a thirst for adventure during times of peace.
A source of adventure that never requires being late for, or worse, missing a meal.

The funding of the Society and the team is a closely guarded secret. It is rumoured that funds are made available both by the Took and the Master of Buckland. And of course that some comes from the inexhaustible store of gold and jools buried in the Hill at Bag End.
The players, though not well paid are of course very well fed. The biggest cost of running the team is the very generous pensions paid to seriously injured players, or to the families of the deceased.
Such a pension is easily enough to count as 'riches' to many hobbits.
