Riverdale Greyskins
Retired [L] Shambling Undead

Lots of rumours have been circulating about the origins of the Riverdale Greyskins, and we might never know the whole truth. Fact is that they are - despite their only recent addition to the league - one of the oldest teams in the CFFL.
It was during recent excavations at the mouth of the Don river, performed in the process of housing constructions, when workers uncovered an ancient Indian burial place. To the delight of the quickly summoned archaeologists, it turned out to be a graveyard of a kind they had never seen before. Highly decorated tombs were covered with ornaments displaying an hitherto unknown sport, vaguely resembling the ancient ball game played by the pre-Columbian peoples of Central America. The researchers soon realized that they must have stumbled over the remains of a participating team. Likely sacrificed as a reward for winning a tournament of any sort.
One might imagine the surprise when the tombs were opened and it turned out the bodies were nearly perfectly conserved. But this was nothing to the surprise when these perfectly conserved bodies suddenly started moving and addressing the excavators. It soon became clear that this team, the mighty "Ishkuteu Rhisheyaakw", had not been sacrificed to please some irate deity. The reward for winning the tournament had been immortality, granted by powerful necromancers. With the slight catch that it would only last as long as they would keep on defending their title and accept all challenges.
Woken up from their centuries of sleep, the Rhisheyaakw insisted on meeting their opponents to prove their worthiness. Unable to understand that nobody had any idea of the rules of this game, that there was no stadium, no team and no challenger at all, the Rhisheyaakw members became more and more uneasy.
Just when the situation was about to escalate, one of the construction workers had the brilliant idea of guiding them to a nearby boodbowl pitch, where the third selection of a local Halfling team was throwing some balls. The empty eye sockets of the Undead started to glow when they became aware of the activities, and soon they had joined in the action. It has not been handed down what happened to the Halflings. But it was quickly clear that the "Ishkuteu Rhisheyaakw" were naturals.
It wasn't long until they were put under a contract by a nifty business man who rebranded them as the easier-to-merchandise "Riverdale Greyskins" and signed them up for the local league. Ever since then the Greyskins have been extremely successful. Malicious tongues say it is because they still think that they are playing for their lives.
None so far.
Necromantic Transactions
The first Zombie to join the team was Fernand Kashama. Fernand, former member of the Winnipeg Claw Bombers, was recruited by Ramtut III himself after a heated argument.
In the last seconds of the match against the Calgary Vanquishers, Thrall Crappy decided to end his miserable life as a walking blood bank and, with some encouragement by King Neferfelablok, joined the team as a free spirit.
Convinced by High Priest Hurtyare, Chaos Warrior Bo chose to leave the Winnipeg Claw Bombers and join his former and now again team mate, sad Chaos Warrior turned happy Zombie Fernand. Welcome, Bo Smith!
Once more, High Priest Hurtyare underscores his role as the Greyskins' top recruiter and persuades linerat Charlie 'the Ghost' Highway of the Vulcan Face-Eaters to do justice to his name and turn into an actual undead. The spooking has begone for Zombie Charlie!
High Priest Hurtyare again! The match against the North York Bears was already over and the stadium half empty, when he caught the opponent's team flat-footed. A blitz, a punch on the head, and the next time Marauder Quincy woke up, his brain was flowing out of his ears. Deprived of all cerebral functions, he now serves as the team punching bag.
At the end of a disappointing match against Quebec Carnival, King Neferfelablok proved to lineelf Martin Fastfist that his fists are fast, too. Since the Greyskins fans despise elves even after their death, zombie Martin was disposed of immediately.
As a novum, new Riverdale member Dundar Heede was not recruited by a block, but a well placed boot by Bo Smith, himself a former Winnipeg player, in a match against the Hope Hop-A-Longs.
Following the foot steps of former Thrall Crappy from the Calgary Vanquishers, Chuck decided to also switch sides after a heated discussion with King Neferfelablok II.
With Kimberly, expert catcher of the BC Felions, High Priest Smakhyare finally recruited a new female team member to balance the male-dominated zombie division of the Greyskins.
It took more than fourteen months, but finally another recruit joined the Riverdale ranks. In fact, Lassie outcompeted two of her former team mates, who also gave their lives hoping to become a new member of the Greyskins! Dundar Heede's kick to her head provided her with the motivation she needed to leave the Calgary Vanquishers.
