Drewfus Darknose was not a dwarf that was accustomed to being in a bad mood, but today he was most definitely not in the Ancestor's favour. He had just received news of an attack on his Brother's caravan on the road from Zorn Uzkul. The family wares were lost and his investment for the year was being digested in the belly of some godforsaken tribe of Orcs.

Pulling his cloak around his shoulders, he trudged through the throng of Kazad-dum's busy trading hall. The otherwise sleepy settlement at the base of the Kurak Peak really came alive during the Spring Equinox as travellers made their way across the Red Eye Mountains, and the Mitterfruhl Festival was the highlight of the season. All manner of traders, mercenaries, chancers, rogues, fortune seekers and... what is that? Who on earth are they?

"Come one, come all!" came the cry from atop a barrel of Bugman's Ale.

The haughty looking dwarf, adorned in a black and amber tabard, bronze shoulderplates with the number 3 embossed in shimmering tinplate, stood in front of a group of his similarly adorned kin. Two brooding Slayers prowled at his feet, shooting wild-eyed stares at anyone foolish enough to meet their gaze. A rather more nimble and spritely dwarf (if there ever was such a thing) was trotting up and down the line, spinning an oval gilded ball between his fingers.

A Blood Bowl team? Here in Kazad-dum? Surely not...

"My name is Glyndwr Copperfist, Captain of the Kazad-dum Tinplate Company Blood Bowl team", said the dwarf, gesturing to the motley bunch lined up before him.

"We are all former employees of the nearby tin mine, lamentably and recently lost to the Wounded Knee tribe of Greenskins. A more fouler and blasphemous insult to Grungni as was ever inflicted upon the Old World"

The Slayers snarled. Drewfus felt his fist tighten. All that money. Gone.

"Far be it from us dwarves to rest on our behinds, we have formed up to cast out from these lands and make our mark in the world by the greatest test on two - or sometimes four - legs, the CIBBL Blood Bowl league!"

The crowd gave a laugh. This bunch? In the CIBBL?

"However, we require one more to complete our number. Who here has the courage and skill to face the Old World on the Blood Bowl pitch and put Kazad-dum on the map, where it belongs? Training, kit, bereavement policies and travel insurance will be provided. Who among you has th..."

Drewfus stopped listening, gazed down the line and picked out the linemen. They were easy to spot. Their faces resembled blind smithy’s thumbnails, but he had made his mind up. There was nothing left for him in Kazad-dum. His Grandfather, Drogni Darknose, had told him tales of the famous Dwarfen Giants team. Who knows, one day his family’s name might be up in lights, instead of lying in the dirt on the road at Zorn Uzkul.

He strode forward, trying to avoid the Slayer's gaze. They weren't the most sociable of dwarves, at the best of times.

“Where do I sign, and where’s my kit?”
