what about including this information in the e-mail that's sent when you register to confirm your password?

everyone needs to open that, it's not a burden for the servers and you will have it there stored for future reference.

Good point Zak.

Yes, many will not read, but some will. Retention of new members will always be the hard part. You are always going to have people sign up and then play a few games (or none) and leave. Even if the extra PM helps increase the retention of new registrations from 10% to 15% you are making strides. Every little bit makes a difference.

Sounds like a better idea to me zak.

Though again, has anyone ever read a confirm password e-mail, or does everyone just auto click the link for activation without thought.

I think the best things we can do are-

1, go over the user guide again and make it as idiot proof as possible, written in as few words as possible.

2, Ask someone with admin access to the forums to clean them up, get rid of all outdated stickies, stick a load of stuff in archives. Then sticky some new useful threads which we can create with, FAQs etc.....

or example, for the league forum, remove the outdate stickied threads and replace with league FAQ which has questions and answers for setting up leagues, joining leagues, what the league division is for etc...

and do this for each of the forum sections.

TBH the forum main page looks very bloated to me anyway really, I think there is only the need for about 10 sections max as apposed to the 20 we currently have.

Here is a draft. Not brilliant(!) but something to start with and change at least:

Welcome coach ***** (coach name inserted if possible).

Whether you are a diehard Fantasy Football coach or new to the genre we would like to help you get started on your path to fun and glory.

The help section on the top right has a wealth of information including on how to's, the random number generator and strategy guides. There is a search function in the help on the bottom right. To setup your first team open the quick start guide in another window. This is a very useful resource:
http://fumbbl.com/help:CRP

If you are not sure of the full game rules then please search for the CRP rulebook on Games Workshop's website. Invaluable for learning about skills and rosters etc.

If you have problems then a good port of call is the community chat room. Click on community at the top of the site and then chat. If you don't have irq select to start the java chat. Many coaches will offer advice there in the fumbbl main room but with a site problem you can ask a question in the fumbbladmin channel. If there is no response in 15 minutes then submit a support ticket: http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=support

But if you think you have found a bug please check this list first in case it is already there!:
http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=bugs

For game disconnection issues read this:
http://fumbbl.com/help:DisconnectionProblems

There is a lot of experienced coaches on here, so you may not get an instant winning streak when you start but learn from them when you can. This is a fantastic game, good luck!

Wouldnt mention bugs in the welcome email or the disconnection problems, first impressions are very important. Its like saying welcome to the site is has problems.

its also too long.

Maybe this should be included so that people know what to expect?

I've removed bugs and disconnection, and added 145.

try something like this -

Welcome to FUMBBL

FUMBBL is a site dedicated to playing and discussing the game Blood Bowl. Whether you're a veteran or a total newcomer; FUMBBL caters for coaches of all experience levels; the site is free, all you need is Java installed on your PC.

The latest version of the games rules can be found here.

If you have any questions about getting started check out the FAQs in the help section (will add link here when FAQ is re-done), or feel free to ask in the forums. There is also a wealth of great information in the help section for you to peruse at your pleasure.

Make sure you have read the site rules and fully understand them; Fumbbl is a moderated site and it is important that the site rules are upheld for everyone's enjoyment of the game.

Here's my take. I've tried to keep it reasonably short while providing the necessary information.

Welcome to FUMMBL.

FUMBBL is a site dedicated to playing and discussing the game Blood Bowl, whether you're a veteran or a total newcomer. The site is free, all you need is Java installed on your PC.

If you want to jump straight into the fray, the Quick Start Guide has instructions on creating a team and finding a game.

If you are new to the game, the 145 Club offers a good place to start playing in a more relaxed environment.

If you want to get involved in the community, FUMBBL has an irc server and on-site forums, which can be found through the navigation bar.

More information about the site can be found in the help section, including a tutorial to using the client and a FAQ section.

There are a lot of experienced coaches on here, so you may not get an instant winning streak when you start but learn from them when you can. This is a fantastic game, good luck!
