Quest for greatness, step 2; Patience
There are many good coaches who are able to pull off very spectacular plays. The problem is that every time one of those plays fail, we might loose a game. To become a consistent high ranking coach (CR>180) it's necessary to minimize the number of times a dice roll can cost you the game. By minimizing risks it is also possible to conserve rerolls longer and thus save them for a vital 2+ dodge or go for it.

A good example of patient playing is a game where I managed to beat PurpleChest who probably can be considered one of the best coaches of fumbbl. His view on pie can be seriously questioned but he is definately a quite good coach. The replay can be found here. Two things are evident from the replay 1) PurpleChest got a huge amount of patience, 2) My fur is much nicer than his.

PurpleChest sets up his defense in T3-5 such a way that it is impossible for me to break through, by completely focusing on keeping his players between me and his endzone he get enough players to make sure that I have to knock down two players to create an open route to the endzone. This of course made it impossible for me to advance into scoring range since Nuffle only allows one blitz action per turn.

This is why patience and a good fur is important. Combing your fur allow you to keep yourself occupied while the opponent is making his moves. Thereby it is less likely that you get bored and make risky moves in order to score quickly. A rasher player (like me without a comb) would probably have moved into contact with his players and hoped to bash through in the next turn.

For me my patience and intense combing paid off. By moving around (without attacking) I forced PurpleChest to constantly adjust his defence. After two turns of perfect defence he made a mistake that allowed me to blitz through for the cruical 1-0 touchdown. I am fairly certain that if I had been more stressed it is likely that he would have been able to penetrate my loose cage and steal the ball like he did in 2nd half. Coaches who wishes to learn something by my ramblins should look at T6 of the replay and try to spot where PurpleChest made the mistake.

In 2nd half I was initially focused on attempting to keep him on the defensive by pretending to be attacking. My major objective was actually to stall until at least a draw could be secure. In T5 I got abit too eager as I thought I could score and instead accidently exposed my ballcarrier. Luckily managed to recify my mistake and retake the ball and even had a scoring opportunity in T6. I did however not want to repeat my mistake and was out of rerolls. It was pretty much a 2/3 chance that I would score and a 1/3 that he would get the ball if I decided to make the pass. Therefore I instead chose to form a cage and hope for the 1-0 victory.

In the end he managed to break the cage anyway but did so in a position where he had to succede with several dicerolls in order to be able to score. Luckily Napoleons old saying "Nuffle is on the side with the most fur" held true and he failed one of them.

It should be noted that I wrote this becuase I wasn't tired enough to go to sleep. Sadly I got tired somewhere half through and decided to finish it anyway, it was intended to be light hearted but I had to edit out most of the tongue in cheek comments due to bad grammar. I will probably redo the whole entry some time in the future so any good comments are likely to be incorporated into the text.

I can't wait to watch the replay, but I had one question just from reading the very entertaining description:

How can coaches/teams without fur apply this lesson to themselves?

Fur is definately the cheapest option but there are also other possibilities. Buying a 2nd monitor to watch Family Guy is a good idea. All the jokes are interchangeable and completely unrelated to the plot so you don't actually have to focus on the show, you just listen for them to say "Remember when..." and then you laugh abit.
