ZOMG.

How awesome would that be if professional football leagues adopted a Blue Card? It would require an extra time-keeping ref just to let players know when they can go back into the game, though.

How awsome would it be if the game had camera refs, temporary bans, accurate clocking of the breaks and extra time, penalty shots from 15 meters, and ball technology to determine accurately a goal and the ball going out of bounds and ideally even camera technology to determine offside?

Is there really any reason not to have the best technology to make a game as accurate as possible short of making game manipulation easier?

yes. it's called being a sport - with all the human aspects - and not a computer simulation.

think how boring it would be to watch if there was nothing to complain about

Game manipulation is pretty important.

phytrr, that's the FIFA argument, somehow feels very made up.

After all, it's not like you can take the human element out of the game. You still need a referee to evaluate actions and fouls and decide what to sanction how.

Right now the situation is more that a referee can make a lot of game deciding calls to the point were he can even control the final score of a game.

Lets look at a regular corner kick. Within the penalty area there are 4 players of each team dragging each others trikots and shoving each other around.

The referee has now three options: Ignore everything (best call), decide attacker foul (resulting in a free kick for the goali), or decide for a defender foul resulting in a penalty shot (worst call).

Since overall all three decisions are terrible, the ref has to essentially wing it every time. Because he has to wing it, nobody can really blame him for deciding these situations however the hell he wants rather than based on objective criteria. Simply by adding tools to his arsenal to address situations, player skill already becomes a much more important aspect of the game.

From the player side the current situation results in that the players who drag each other get a too significant advantage to not to do it when you already know that the referee will likely not do something about it.
The player is therefore in a helpless dilemma: If he abides by the rules he's going to have too much of a disadvantage to have a good shot at winning. If he doesn't abide by the rules the referee might call him out at any given time. It's a lose lose situation.

But how would technology change the three options available to him in that case? It's not like he needs it to be able to see what's happening, he already knows it is.

Technology wasn't the only suggestion. Was kinda going in on the blue card thing etc. But technology is also a step to improve the accuracy of the decision making on a professional level. If you have the choice between a more accurate decision and a less accurate decision, the argument that people will be more upset and engaged over inaccurate decisions, doesn't seem like a good enough argument to me, to encourage false decisions.

If you look for instance at the US viewers you see that these things rather keep them away from the sport. So I'm not convinced that false decisions are a necessity to get media attention. We have the same issues mostly in aesthetical sports, ice-dancing, high diving, boxing, but I think there is a reason why these sports attract less media coverage than they could too.
A boxing fight that is decided by three refs based on how esthetical it looked just doesn't appeal to me either.
But then we could go the other way and decide a football game based on how pretty both teams looked rather than goals. Guess I just prefer hard facts, kinda think most people do.
