Jack in the Box
Every time I get deep in the box, I remember why I left the time before.

The Jacks.

The Jacks are the natural evolution of a random pairing system in a game where teams can be focused on killing other teams as a method of victory. The Jacks enjoy this style of play, and that is of course, completely fine.

It's when Jack is trying to enforce his style of enjoyment on me that I begin to get irritated. He gloats when he kills players or forces a team into retirement even if and ESPECIALLY when his opponent is clearly not enjoying it. He fouls to the end of the game and hunts down the best players when he is winning, and has buzz terms ready for opponents that are not enjoying this like a Jack, like 'pixel hugger,' 'go play ranked,' and 'it's BLOOD bowl.'

Jack has a ludicrously long profile defending his style of play ahead of time. Why? Because in real tabletop blood bowl, or any medium where most people had the freedom to choose their opponent, they wouldn't go anywhere near Jack. His lair, by process of elimination, is the one where people must stumble in rather than be invited.

Jack is an expert at missing the point. He drives away new, passive, or nice players because he believes they aren't in tune with the game. He can't see that if he played like he did in the physical setting, with the same belligerent rub-your-nose-in-it attitude he uses online, people would get sick of him by halftime.

I guess I'm trying to say that I think that the same internet bully-boyism that destroys civility in every other online game has a powerfully annoying presence in the box. I wish it didn't.

To the one Jack who will believe this is directed to him and him alone because I left after a game with him, and undoubtedly attempt to champion the Jacks, I will try my best to say that this is directed to about 10 different people in the Box, not you specifically.

Flame on.

Edit: I forgot to add: BillBrasky you are awesome and I regret never managing to beat you.

This is why I will be rich the day I invent a way to stab people in the face over the internet. :D

Why to people insist in believing that no-one would focus on team destruction, revel in the death of the opposition and gloat over every casualty in real life?
Every TT game I've ever played or watched has been entirely like this. Smack talk, T16 fouls, the lot.
I think a lot of fumbblers would be suprised by my local playgroups.

I belive this is where I need to quote Purplechest: "My goal is to game in a way that makes me happy, and to try not to even imply, let alone state, that anyones elses choices of how to game are in any way lesser than mine."

Easy to say, a bit harder to live by ;)

There may be one or two undesirables in Blackbox, but they are not as common place as your blog might suggest.

Also, I find it a bit strange that you complain about 'killer' teams, when your main teams were Claw/DP Chaos and Orcs.

Having said that, it's a shame to lose another player from the box, especially as I seem to remember enjoying my games against you.

Duke. I love killer teams as well as I love elves. That's not what the post is about.

@Natakutoo
Sounds like your friends aren't a friendly group.

It's one thing to have a scorched earth team like chaos or khemri and play them to win. Playing primarily to ruin other teams is just being a douche though, IMO.

Box or not, you find those guys out there. Just a bit more common in the box due the ostracism that engenders in ranked.

Usual bollocks from a coach that expects everyone to play HIS way. A classic example of someome forgetting it's a GAME. How presumtuous is it to assume how someone plays? BTW, sorry about killing 2 of your payers during your last B game off BLOCKS. My dice were brutal.

@maysrill
I'd say they are very friendly, they just like the rough and tumble aspect of the game along with a solid side order of smack talk. Have a beer, play the game, enjoy the carnage and go home with no hurt feelings. They'd never say you were wrong for preferring to score TDs and not liking to foul as much as possible, and you'd be complimented on your victories. But they'd love fouling your recievers to death just the same and say so.

Still missing the point, Calcium. I wasn't expecting otherwise anyways, mate.

I might have misunderstood your post slightly then. I do not see an issue in people making killer teams, although my Rats have gone through more rebuilds than I can count.

As for the 'social' aspect, I wrote a blog a while back suggesting some of the manners have gone from the Blackbox, so I guess you might be talking on similar lines. It is not a large quantity of coaches, but there are certainly a few who have allowed their social graces to drop, as well as one or two who were already avoided when they played in Ranked.

@natakutoo - thats the way I used to enjoy the game. However within our social group it was fine and nothing was misinterpreted as abusive or wrong.
It is a different story if your playing in that fashion against someone over the internet - social boundaries have not been set and what you may consider to be ok is seen in a different way by your opponent.

anyway that is taking us away from what relezite is trying to say, which is he is fine with the different style but is not happy that people try to force him to have that attitude as well. At least thats how i read it.

=D Quit rubbing my nose in it, exactly!
Posted by Relezite on 2010-02-19 20:04:57
I also think that Jack's style of play makes most girls/casual gamers quit bloodbowl before they really get into it.
Posted by Calcium on 2010-02-19 21:06:10
I missed the bit where I was rubbing your nose in it. It's all rather pathetic, labelling anyone in this manner. has it ever occured to you that lots of coaches love playing in this manner?
Posted by Frankenstein on 2010-02-19 21:58:24
I think Calcium is pretty cool, actually. Don't know what has upset you so much, probably some kind of misunderstanding.

Incidentally, games such as Blood Bowl are usually not interesting for casual gamers / girls in general, hasn't got much to do with "Jack's" particular behaviour.

I bet Jack's very pissed at this blog.....
Posted by koga49 on 2010-02-19 23:23:44
he has been offline for 13 weeks. think jack may have already hit the road.

i am not sure i did say:

'My goal is to game in a way that makes me happy, and to try not to even imply, let alone state, that anyones elses choices of how to game are in any way lesser than mine'

but i really wish i did. As it sounds pretty good to me .

It was probably inappropriate of me to strike out like this. I believe all this, and it's why I don't want to play in the box anymore, but the blog doesn't really serve any purpose except to try to ruin somebody's day, ie, 'get their goat.'
