Unofficial FUMBBL naming rules
Dear coaches of FUMBBL,

I've decided to create a list of things I know are not allowed in team/player names, but are not listed under the rules section of the website. If anyone knows other "unofficial" naming rules, please post a comment.

Under the rules section of the site, the only rule directly pertaining to team names is:

"All players and teams must be named. Make an effort figuring out names. We don't want silly names like 'Lineman 1' or offensive names. Use your judgement."

So here are the unofficial rules I've observed through observation/painful experience.

1. No obscenity/racism. This is what they mean by "offensive". Boring names are the only thing that offends me, but I don't pay for this site!

2: no using ALL CAPSLOCK
(ex: http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=team&op=view&team_id=385672)

3: no using "l33t" speak
(ex: http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=team&op=view&team_id=618552 - check the graveyard for what the names were like)

That's all I have got so far.

You just gave me an excellent name for my next Wood Elf team: The Prince and the Pooper!

Wardancers would be Prince Groaner and Valiant Poopchute...

... Unofficially, all names should be as cool as that! ;)

This is all pretty obvious, no need to spell it out. Just put a little more effort into your names, and try to make them sound like actual players from a fantasy world, not names that came from the mind of a retarded child!

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAPSLOCK TEAM?
Posted by JanMattys on 2010-05-18 11:03:17
This blog and this player http://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=player&player_id=7501760 are about naming rules that have been in effect since (at least) 2005.

No need for snarky comments when you're the one breaking the rules, really.

I was the one who changed the names after another coach reported the team. I'll take this opportunity to adress a few points that have been raised.

1. As has been pointed out by several coaches, the team naming rules have been around for quite some time. They're neither, as you seem to think, new or unofficial.

2. Every time you submit a newly created team for approval this text appears

* * * Important Notice * * *

Before you activate your team, please make sure your team complies with our Team Naming Rules (this is a link to the naming rules)

Failure to follow these rules may result in your account being suspended for some time, depending on the severity of the transgression. The staff and the community are constantly monitoring teams and we do take this seriously. So, please make sure your team is in accordance with the rules before activating it.

3. It really isn't the administrations job to coddle people who are too lazy to read the quite clear, very simply rules laid out. We assume people are reasonably intelligent people with the ability to read. You've agreed to obey the rules, it is your responsibility to read them. I do not think this is too much to ask.

4.It is true I changed the names without consulting the coach first. All I did, however, was replace the 1337-speak signs with real letters (M instead of |\/|, o instead of 0 etc.). If you feel this grossly violated your team concept, theme or ability to be creative then that is a shame. If your only team concept/theme was to violate established site rules, that's an even bigger shame.

I don't see why team's names can't begin with the word "the." Considering all of the esoteric team names on the site, there are plenty of instances where "the" would be perfectly appropriate.

I understand Prince Valiant perfectly well!

I created a Goblin test team for FFB called "Loud Rotten Bastards 6" ... or LRB6 to make it obvious.
I found it renamed, without notice, to "Loud Rotten 6".

Fortunately I found a smarter Admin in the chat who allowed to call them "Buggers" instead of "Bastards".

I wonder if this player would be renamed
Stefan Kuntz
Problem is: according to the rules, he would have to be renamed. But, this is a real and totally inoffensive name of one of the EURO1996 champions.
Just as no Team or player may be called Pajero, even if it is a team of car names only.

Rules are rules and you have to draw a line somewhere between total fascism and total anarchy.

Complaining about false positives when the general rule makes sense is stupid. You know why the rule is there. You know the rule makes sense. You also know that, even if you are technically right on a specific case, you are suffering a (very minor) inconvenience for the greater good of rules consistency and overall site friendliness.

Why is dealing with it SO difficult? Geez...

YEAH!... and what does Zombie have against retarded children anyway?!?
Posted by maysrill on 2010-05-18 16:06:48
I've made dozens of teams and a proportionate ton of players, and never had any of them rejected.

It's not hard if you're not going out of your way to be a weasel about sneaking something through.

Good news, theres too much teams with leet/number names.
Posted by Arktoris on 2010-05-19 02:41:01
hi fenric,

I think "the" is not allowed as a team name start because result files use the first three letters of a team name bridged with a "vs". They don't want a flood of thevsthe result zip files. Anyway, that's my guess.

personally the team names that annoy me the most are "sentences for names". especially when the sentences run into other player names...to me that much like lineman1 lineman2. and sentence names are usually not names, but stupid statements about miscellaneous subjects.

Venting (i.e. this blog) felt really good. I tried to do it as politely as possible, but let's be realistic: I wasn't in a wonderful mood.

In the mean time, I'll try to remember that I am a weasel, sneak, lazy, snarky...did I miss any names I was called? The (over) reactions in this comment section are very amusing, thanks as always gentlemen of fumbbl.

An entirely sincere thanks for the response from Leijonet. I realize it is not the admin's obligation to contact me, but it was extremely jarring seeing the names changed without any notice. Also my thanks to everyone who pointed out the specific links to rules that I could not find in my moment of frustration. Hopefully this blog spares some other lazy sneaky snarky weasel noob from making my mistake(s) :-)
