pact @ swl 48
Where to start? Well, for one, there is a distinct lack of Pact resources available - apart from the "clawpomb all mans los" kind, that is.

Secondly, I figure I might be able to improve my game by retaining some things in writing, as opposed to just memory.

The second game of this season was against Tomay's Nurgle. At some point during the start he made the comment that my Pact must struggle against elves, because there are no skills to deal with them. Would that were the greatest of my problems.

This is also the second game this season that I dove into without any real plan. Having had a quick glimpse at the Nurgle pre-game told me that he had enough Block, more Guard than me, a couple of playmaker goats and a single can-opener.

With that in mind, I figured I'd do the usual horse-around mid, get a couple of KOs with the big guys maybe, lose some guys but buy enough lateral space to bullshit my way into a td somehow around turn six or seven. Passing was not really on the table, but since my rat now has Blodge + Two Heads, running the ball would be the best option anyway.

Nothing like the best laid plans of mice. Environmental variables in the first turn resulted in a premature turn over, followed by the now-exposed Mino getting (predictably) blitzed off the pitch, and the complete loss of momentum for the drive. The would-be pocked drive on the bottom of the pitch was a no-go, and with it, out went my only real 'plan' for the half.

Tomay did a good job pressuring the ball through a broken flank, and for the second time this season I had to blow the Wizard to recover the ball deep in my own half. The rat nearly came through, streaking away with the ball into the Nurgle half, but since I'd almost bled dry by that point, only the Ogre was around to cover him.

Notes to self:

a) read the opponent's players, and see which one has (the key skill, in this case ->) Wrestle, instead of "oh yea, looks about right, that'll do"

b) replace the Ogre with a non move-busted one. One point of MA makes a big difference

Anyway, rat gets wrestled down, AG4 goats, blah blah blah...

Beyond this point, the game played out pretty predictably. Defensive drives went poorly because again I over-thought my opponent. If a Nurgle player looks to be setting up for a drive into the top side of the pitch - HE ISN'T GOING TO BAIT & SWITCH YOU. The speed is simply not there.

Play Tweedledumb & Tweedledee in the center with overlapping Guard, and play the Mino centered in behind. Once you see which way the drive is going, plug the cow into there, and zerg rush the gaps with Marauders. No need to be fancy. Leave the rat and elf to cover the wide zones/space.

At least, the upshot was that the Goblin managed to bullshit his way into two touchdowns including a Throw Teammate, earning himself Two Heads for his troubles. Will need to start him more often.

Final score 2 - 3, and a Marauder to be replaced.

Lessons learned:

1) read, pay attention, execute

2) protect the bloody cow. Even if you manage to foul out the can opener

3) Ogre and Troll are roadblocks, but they need to hit, and they need to hit AV8. Make this happen

4) have a (backup) plan

I think the misclick at the start of the game was what really cost you.

On defense, the key is to not let anyone penetrate too far into your zone and leave you chasing back towards your own TZ. This is always going to be hard, but your team is getting better.

Don't expect too much of big guys, they are notoriously unreliable. If they don't roll doubles for block after their 2nd skill, get rid of them and start again (if you have the cash).

I'd suggest concentrating on guard and tackle as well as developing a can opener of your own.

You played well and seem to be getting better than you were for your first season, so thats good. Its a tough team.
