I play BB, for real.
This week end I shall play my first real life BB since I was 14.

I am going to the UK Team Championship in York. Train booked, cardboard box packed and space under bridge reserved.

I have agreed to join Team Fantastic, with some noobs called PeteW, Malmir and Endzone. Their expectations seem high. There is a decent chance I embarrass myself hugely, as frankly that's 3 pretty decent coaches.

So help me FUMBBL, you're my only hope. What do I need to remember? What do I need to change? What will I find odd, different, strange and uncomfortable? Will they mind if I stand on a chair and look at the board from above, and sideways?

Seriously, your tips would be appreciated as PeteW expects excellence and, with one of the days being a Sunday, mighty may be his wrath if i let the team down.

All tips welcome.

heh. funny post. you are obviously a great coach, but one little thing. Remember the turnmarker!
I don't know the rules about this in the teamchallenge, but forgetting the turnmarker can mess up the game. So when you get your turn. Remember to move the turnmarker as the first thing.
Posted by Cloggy on 2018-01-16 14:10:20
You are TOAST my good man. People are gonna laugh their arses off as you try to score touchdowns on the righthand sideline :)
Posted by Harad on 2018-01-16 14:36:34
You have to make the noises yourself.
Posted by Purplegoo on 2018-01-16 14:40:31
1. Buy me a beer.

2. Accept a beer from me.

3. Profit.

You’ll be fine. People are welcoming, it’s the same game. Until you’ve rolled dice, you can take stuff back, just don’t move all 11 guys and then try and remember where they started!

I look forward to this being the weekend the addiction started, looking forward to saying hello. :)
Posted by Purplegoo on 2018-01-16 14:42:22
(Forwards backwards is a good idea, by the way. When a player does a thing, rotate him 180. At the end of your turn, make sure they’re all facing the same way. Which way is unimportant)

Having been a mainly FUMBBL player who has only dabbled in table top, I would suggest that you will come up against people who have memorised the weather and kick off tables and are used to doing the odds in their heads in a flash...

I got very used to the FUMBBL client "doing it all for me" and my brain got lazy. Just say "I only play FUMBBL" and you will mostly get sympathy for being a bit slow :) ... unless that's just me! :)

As people said, try to remember the turn marker. Mark your moved players. And it would also be good if you had skill rings or something similar to mark the players with additional skills.

If people ask to share dice, you should agree.

It also does not hurt to clarify how you handle crooked dice (rerolling all dice or only the crooked ones, when do you consider a die crooked etc).

But usually people are nice and forthcoming, so you will be fine. Following purplegoo's beer advice is also a good starting point ;-)

cu in a few days!!

Take some pictures. ;)
Posted by PeteW on 2018-01-16 15:09:31
I turn sideways and then put them all to face the front at the end. I can't handle the alternating forwards/backwards thing.

I also say outloud, "Right. My turn 5." at the start of each turn which is a verbal prompt to move my marker. At the end of my turn I say, "Okay, I'm done, that's your turn 6." to prompt them to move their's.

Everyone will be really nice, so don't worry about that.

Try not to roll your dice onto the floor - you may as well wear a Tshirt with "Noob" written on it.

Ooo - and make sure you agree at the start that all dice have to be flat on the board (or whatever) but just agree, as cocked dice arguments are always unpleasant.

No-one will have cheaty dice. You will believe they do at some point over the weekend. But they don't.

Some people believe EVERYONE has cheaty dice and will always demand to share dice. They may have smelly hands. Deal with it and share the dice.

Don't be too slow. Get a chessclock app in case you are.

Try to win. Have fun. (In that order.)
Posted by PeteW on 2018-01-16 15:10:55
Damn. Posted at same time as Candlejack. But what he said.

Oh - and I have models, dice, templates and skill rings for you, so at least you will look like you know what you are doing...
Posted by LucaAnt on 2018-01-16 15:48:47
Try to have fun and being smiley even when dice are against you man :)
Posted by PurpleChest on 2018-01-16 16:20:19
skill rings? I dont really do jewelry. Maybe an earing when i was young, but thats it.
Posted by Rags on 2018-01-16 16:40:44
With TT, there is no client to remember your team's, and more so your opposition team's. skills and stats and for you. It's a bit like Diving Tackle in fumbbl - even when coaches specifically mark up DT opposition, it's still easily forgotten until too late. With TT it's like that for every skill!

Of course you won't forget block and dodge, or indeed most skills when actually in use, but organising your team and planning your turns effectively against oppositions skillset takes a bit of getting used to.
Posted by ThierryM on 2018-01-16 17:11:46
- Colored elastic loops = your brain will suffer less as they are used to mark added skills (if any).
- Bring also water and a few pills to kill any headaches that might show up (noise in the room, overheatting brain from tense games, etc)
- bring some change to buy a drink to your "opponents", shall you win or loose !

Corner a wild animal at your own peril ;)
Posted by Arktoris on 2018-01-16 18:12:37
the biggest change to TT is clock management. 4 minutes goes by real fast when you're rolling all those dice by hand.

So do not take every "easy" block and move first or you're ballcarrier may get stuck out int he open.
Posted by Arktoris on 2018-01-16 18:13:20
oh...and practice moving the turn marker. failing to do so is an illegal procedure and will either cost you a reroll...or a turnover (yikes!).
Posted by Candlejack on 2018-01-16 18:19:37
no 4 minute rules in place at tournaments (at least none that i know) just time limit for the game. you can play your turns just as you do online because some will always be quicker so you should be fine unless you are endzone...
Posted by Wozzaa on 2018-01-16 18:30:07
@Harad with the best advise!!
Posted by DUBitativ on 2018-01-16 19:16:36
In the TT tourneys and leagues of my zone all trust in others and we usually don't share the dices. In addition, the organization give two 6d and suggest playing with them. Even I will never share my classy fumbbl dices!

In other side, I love to throw the dice but some people of my zone use a drive cup. It's useful to not throw off the table or know down minis and avoid the crocked ones.

Enjoy the experience! It's great!
Posted by DUBitativ on 2018-01-16 19:17:29
Sorry, they use a dice cup.
Posted by Dhaktokh on 2018-01-16 19:23:39
This is your chance!

TRASH TALK THE AUDIENCE!
Give em all our silence from the years on fumbbl without the chance to harass them back!! So you really get to know what they say.

And oh, bring signs with /boo /stomp and so on, to start a flame war.
The rest is easy.

Posted by ramchop on 2018-01-16 19:25:16
People change their minds and move players back to their original positions. If no dice have been rolled this is generally accepted as ok. It threw me a bit first time I re-entered the world of TT. "Wait? what? can you do that?"

I strongly suggest a practice game first. Time can get away from you if you're new, and games running overtime are a headache for the good souls who run tournies.

Enjoy! TT tournies are great fun
Posted by Verminardo on 2018-01-16 19:35:29
Turn marker and the forward backward thing are good shouts. Also, maybe review some of the stuff you never had to do by yourself on Fumbbl, like crowd throw-ins or how to figure out Gate and Fame.

About the turn time, I've actually found that I was faster than most table top coaches as I had more practice, but maybe that won't apply to that particular tourney you're going to. At any rate Endzone will be in trouble. XD

Good luck and have fun!
Posted by Verminardo on 2018-01-16 19:36:07
P.S.: What are you playing?

Hahaha good one wasn't it.
Posted by Jeffro on 2018-01-16 20:03:59
You're going to have a blast... and as much as I love FUMBBL - tabletop is where it's at.

Everyone already pointed out the biggest differences and they all center on the physical nature of moving your turn marker, turning your models, and of course rolling your own dice.

I agree completely with PeteW in that starting with the models facing the opposition and turning them 180deg when they are done with their action is best. Then turn them all back around at the end (signifying your turn being done). That part can be done while your opponent moves (saving time) and isn't confusing to either (as can happen when you switch back and forth).

Get a dice cup, too. Nobody can argue about palming dice, and it's speedier because you don't have dice rolling all over the place. If you're sharing dice, that's another good way to signify your turn is done - hand over the dice in a cup.

Have fun, though! Your teammates are already good enough to win on their own ;)
Posted by Verminardo on 2018-01-16 20:21:24
Also, remember to say out loud "Blitz", "Pass", "Hand Over", or "Foul", before you move your player. Most coaches I've met haven't been super strict about this but it can't hurt.
Posted by PurpleChest on 2018-01-16 20:43:01
Turn Marker: Gotcha.
Turning Models: Seems sensible
Practise Game: PeteW already insisted upon it.
Speed: I think I'm a reasonably fast coach, even with real actual dice should be Ok i hope.
Skill Rings: Really hope opponents have them, remembering their skills sounds like a pain.
Taking back moves if no dice rolled: Ok, sounds weird but OK. Will try not to punch people and call them cheats.

Throw ins, Gate and Fame: Will have to read the rules, always meant to do that.
Dice Cup: i have a dice box, always used to (AD&D) put the dice in it, shake, put down and open, then read dice. So I am sure I can adjust to a cup. Shake in cup then roll onto board? or shake slam down then lift (like liar dice)?

Audience: Finally I shall know who is booing me? I'm betting it turns out it was PeteW all along.
Posted by Jeffro on 2018-01-16 20:44:37
Shake in the cup and slam on a coaster or the like (away from models if possible ;) Always fun to slam something!
Posted by PurpleChest on 2018-01-16 20:46:26
Dice rerolling: so any dice not 100% flat i can expect people to want rerolled?
Announcing moves: Will do, cn you say 'i will smash that player in the face' instead of 'blitz' and 'ground blitz' instead of 'foul'?

Many thanks for all the tips, really genuinely helpful. We should maybe archive all these in a forum thread somewhere. And feel free to keep them coming.

About dice rerolling. Some will want them rerolled, others will put one die on top of the other and if the top one slides off you'll have to reroll it.

Don't agree to use the illegal procedure rule, both coaches have to agree to use it for it to be in place. If you're not used to IRL you'll loose/or give your opponent rerolls really quickly ;).

Don't forget to declare blitz, pass action, hand off and foul. I guess some coaches could be picky about that.

I usually have a reference sheet just to quickly look through a rule if needed. Either of these seem fine. Skim through them first though.

About skillrings. Don't count on opponents having them for you. Get some rubberbands in different colours or something. Or borrow from a teammate. Its also nice for you to have the same colours on your players all tourney.

Note that many TT tourneys says that if skills can be seen then opponent should be allowed to mark your players in a way that does not damage the mini. So better get this sorted yourself beforehand.

You should have a lot of fun.
I found just remembering to turn figures a certain way at the end of their action, to show you have used them, took a while to get accustomed to. A practice game would help. Doesn't need to be against a great player, just something to remind yourself of the flow of the game in tabletop.
Have a drink and snack to hand.
Remain calm when the rolls go awry.
Celebrate TDs greatly.
Though players are usually friendly you will likely meet someone who curses like crazy or claims they are a very good player, or grunts in disgust if things aren't going well, or has foul breath.

Oh yes and the FUMBBL dice having the symbol on the 1 confuses folks. Maybe no harm in that in a competition. :)

Ah another thing is, that it is generally accepted that you can measure/count the passing distances at any time even before you declare the action or even while you are moving another player. So don't be confused about that. And usually people use the passing table instead of the ruler.

Illegal procedure will not be used, so no need to worry about it.

I have a bag of skill rings that we give to opponents.

Yes, always declare a Blitz especially.

:)

Good! Illegal procedure is the worst most anal rule. Hate it. :D

It cost me a game or two when I played my first TT games.

I do not expect to be passing. But you never know.

When you score your first touchdown (it will happen!), rip off your outer shirt, exposing the purple T-shirt underneath, jump up on the table, and scream "GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES!".

That will set the right mood going forward for the tourney, and provide some nice memories! :)
Posted by PurpleChest on 2018-01-17 18:13:40
righto, can do.

On 2nd TD, take off your T-shirt and wave it around like a helycopter!
Posted by Seventyone on 2018-01-17 22:33:22
on any TD scored against you shout "Its a conSPIROcy" and then assemble your team into the super mega bunker

Good luck, try not to worry about making procedural mistakes.

Yeah, holding people strictly to that rule on their first game is rather d***ish unless everyone is new.

but playing without the time limit or illegal procedure is the same thing as bowling with the guard rails up. Yeah, you bowled a 220...but once people see the guard rails...no one's gonna care.

It would be a rare TT tournament that had individual turn limits. You typically have 2 and a half hours for a match. So 4 minutes can be an average turn.
Posted by pythrr on 2018-01-18 23:05:06
jesus, no one invokes 4 mins or turn-counter turnovers do they? i've never seen hat. people are less assholey in real life.

enjoy.

punch chewy for me should he turn up

it's rare to find a tournament that plays vanilla rules. They're usually full of house rules...just to smooth things along.

I'm talking about actual local leagues. You walk into my league boasting your NAF ranking and trophies...but that timer keeps kicking your banjo...sorry...but you're not as good as you think you are.

And that's the reason why so many hate the timer/IP. When you suffer a turnover by them...that was all you...can't blame the dice. Some people's egos can't handle that.
Posted by pythrr on 2018-01-19 00:56:25
nah, cos it's dickish. then again, i pay stupidly fast, so the timer is never an issue for me. but i wouldn't enforce it on any unless they were so so slow every turn.... and as for illegal proceedure... gods no. just remind them.

/waves my NAF trophy around a bit!

I've really re-found, or re-kindled my love of Blood Bowl by finding and joining a local Table Top league. It really does give you a great perspective on the way coaches approach the game in person.

Network. You may be meeting a LOT of the coaches for the first time, many of which I'd gather play here. The first turn you get to play, you'll be nervous and sweaty-palmed, but that should go away by turn 4.

You've been a top coach and a joy to watch play for a number of years here, PC. Just because you're playing it in a different format doesn't change the good coach that you are.

Heck, with a team like PeteW, Endzone, you and Malmir, I would've named your team something like The Ultimate Mr. Men. That team has some serious luck behind it.

One thing I do in TT, I always leave my pile of re-rolls off to the side (making sure my opponent knows how many I have to start play), and then put my RR marker on the turn I use it. I keep a better idea in my head then of when and how exactly I'm using my RR's. Maybe that's just me, but I find I manage them better if I see where I'm using them.

So, how did it go?`Was it fun playing tabletop?
