You, the tin foil hat wearers
Firstly, for those that don't know. I was a member of staff on this site for.......what 3 years. I will confirm to my knowledge the following are accurate regarding the RNG:

1. There are no known hacks that I am aware of since around (2008), on an old client where those hacks were fixed.
2. There is nothing that makes the dice biased in anyway. Nothing to do with your account, donating, admin special privileges...nothing. There is an admin client, but that's purely for doing admin tasks. The RNG and the site are not one thing, it would have to be a deliberate sabotage to make a bias, and Christer would not do that.
3. There is nothing wrong with the RNG. It's as near as perfect as an RNG could be.

Even if the RNG was massively out, how would you even know? You could tell by playing a dozen or 2 dozen games a week? That simply is not the case, and still wouldn't have much of an affect on your gaming. Without doing a large sample test (which is done by the way) you would not know.

So I find it incredibly frustrating when coaches complain about the RNG because of 2 reasons.

1. The outright stupidity.
2. The ungratefulness that you play on a free site and question the work put in, without checking first (i.e. a large sample test).

Instead of complaining, look at it like this:

If you're a guest at somebodies dinner table. Don't complain that the food is inedible because you are too stupid to use a knife and fork.

Yes, you could work on it, get some tips, practise or even take some lessons. But the reality is, you are still too stupid to use a knife and fork. And if you are too stupid to use a knife and fork, you aren't going to get your fair share of the food.

Stick to pizza or hamburgers.

(Edit)
Just had a positive conversation with the guy that prompted me to post this blog. I appreciated his responsible candidness. Also please note, I am not saying you shouldn't feel frustrated at getting bad dice. I think we all do, but that's the game and just that.

Hi.

1. What is RNG? Random Number Generator?
2. Why this post? Had some bad experiences with opponents lately?

I'm not asking to this to be against your post, I'm just currious as to why you post this.

Can we stick to fish and chips?
Posted by Antithesisoftime on 2015-11-29 23:22:07
On that other blog, I wasn't complaining.
A Fickle RNG is an accurate one that is working in perfect order. Streakiness in fact proves it works as intended, considering how many games are played on Fumbbl

@Specialone

1. Random Number Generator is correct.
2. I believe this is in response to a recent forum thread which has now been locked.

@HM - It wound me up also. I missed getting my final say in the thread due to it being locked.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying "You shouldn't get fed up with the dice." We all do, but that's not the RNG's fault. That's the game.

"Fickle" is a negative adjective that suggests being 'choosy'. The RNG is in no way 'choosy'. Bad choice of words and a bad blog to post anything about the RNG, imo.
Posted by PaddyMick on 2015-11-29 23:50:40
Nuffle is fickle. RNG is not real obvs

Pffft. Typical admin/past admin insider blather.

So there is no admin client? Really?

Ever tried comparing your results for the two weeks after you have just donated at least $20 to results from weeks that are more than a month from your last donation?

Jus sayin.

I seem to get better Virtual Dice right after my Gold donation spot turns Silver. I think its meant to trick me into thinking of paying more money because of I am so happy with the system. I am on to your scheme now Fumbbl, cant fool me!

Never thought I'd say this (gulp):

I agree 100% with Harvestmouse.

Well, there's 2 different things. People refer to the RNG as the method by which the die results are obtained. This is the correct reference, and HM addressed this perfectly. The other is as a measure of how luck-dependent a game is. People will refer to hearthstone or bloodbowl as 'very RNG'. This does not relate to the RNG itself, but merely to the degree in which it can drive a match. Most people whining about this seriously underestimate the skill component in blood bowl, but it IS true that a match can go a rookie's way due to a timely blitz! or quad skull. Part of this is due to the flakiness of the game's probability distributions (by design), which are captured no better or worse by fumbbl's RNG as it is by rolling real dice.
Posted by gibby33 on 2015-11-30 00:31:29
Am I the only one that thought that you were still one of the Fumbbl admins? XD

When did you step down?
Posted by spubbbba on 2015-11-30 00:37:06
I'm not 100% convinced that forum thread wasn't a case of trolling.
Posted by pythrr on 2015-11-30 00:51:58
RNG = CIA plot.
Posted by ArrestedDevelopment on 2015-11-30 01:22:43
It's embarrassing that a post like this might actually be necessary for some people. For both of the points made.

Thanks to Christer and all involved in Fumbbl's creation and continued existence.

Nuffle does what Nuffle wills, all is chaos and randomness. Praise Nuffle, and his earthly representative the ARRengy, for their wisdom is unbounded and they do loveth greatly the fouls of the 16th turn. A d6.

I run a free dice game site for Yahtzee and we get all the same kind of comments... I have not really experienced that here but I can say that on our website the strongest complaints tend to come from people with pretty average-looking ratings and scores.

I can see that it is hard to believe that it's possible to keep rolling quadskulls or in my case to have around 70 skill upgrades only one of which was +STR yet others have several players on the same team with two STR upgrades each.

That's life, as annoying as it is.

I like the scientist saying, if it can possibly happen, then it will.

^^ therefore i had no choice but to write that you are a tool box, so it is not my fault! ;)

> Ever tried comparing your results for the two weeks after you have just donated at least $20 to results from weeks that are more than a month from your last donation?

I've donated two weeks ago or so. Since then:

- my Lizzies suffered 4 CAS against WEs
- my Nurgles suffered 4 CAS against Humans
- my Elves suffered 5 CAS against Orcs (OK, that one's kinda normal)
- my Humans suffered 5 CAS against HEs

http://fumbbl.com/p/matches?c=thoralf

Does it mean I should stop donating?

;-)

A million monkeys bashing on typewriters = Shakespeare.
A million Fumbbl games = 3.5, all the time, every time.
Would vote this blog π if it let me.

Actually, they wear fedoras.
Posted by coombz on 2015-11-30 04:17:18
I kind of sympathise...

but if you keep on getting aggravated by the fact that stupid people exist and say/do stupid things...you're gonna be in a state of stress and rage pretty much your entire life :)

Who, the monkeys?

PSA: Please don't wear fedoras. Only in the comfort & privacy of your home, surrounded by consenting adults, is it okay to wear a fedora.
Posted by pythrr on 2015-11-30 07:08:19
Does the fedora have to give consent too?
Posted by harvestmouse on 2015-11-30 07:18:34
@gibby33 In 2012 maybe or 2013.
Posted by Badoek on 2015-11-30 10:24:13
That topic was somewhat amusing. I feel sorry that more than one admin (or even the one) even had to read that stuff though. I can understand people getting a wrong idea about how the game, the client and the site works but the attitude was just plain wrong and apparently unfixable for us. Maybe somebody will be able to explain IRL. Or not. Moving on!
Posted by Kam on 2015-11-30 13:09:17
You realize the only thing some people will remember is "there is an admin client"? :D
Posted by ImpactedAnimal on 2015-11-30 15:26:40
It's a weird world when you first join with people ccoming from many different walks of life to fumbbl and it is, imo, human nature to look for something to blame that is not yourself for things such as losing matches on fumbbl.

I think part of the disgruntlement can come from the fact that the standard of play here is higher than a lot of places (e.g. cyanide open leagues) so people find it hard to deal with the fact that the learning curve will be steep and paaved with many humuliating defeats...
After over 1000 games i still have a losing record but it is slightly less bad... My long winded point here, if there is one, is that if your skill is less high, variance can punish you even more as you need more dice rolls to work out your way in order to win.

Invariably where there are lots of rolls dependent on one another we only remember the ones we fail ;)

Cheers for the article HM!

I agree with ImpactedAnimal in this. I think guys aren't used to the caliber on here and expect to walk through guys like they do in their own TT leagues or other BB means. Most Failures are not by dice, they are by situations you put yourself in, having to depend on dice. If that makes any sense. Experience takes away the randomness.

I'd stick to carbonara.
Posted by Naru1981 on 2015-12-01 10:50:00
so how do we use the admin client then? ;)
