Waystone Outcasts: CIBBL Year 8 Autumn - Season Review

CIBBL Year 8 Autumn - Season Review

With another year in the books, CIBBL roving reporter Calamity Codswallop reviews the latest season for everyone's favourite aerial showboaters, the Waystone Outcasts.
Their long tenure and recent good form had seen them compete all the way up in the Bronze league in Year 8. They found themselves amongst some stiff opposition:

Dark Room Delights (Slaanesh)
Dökkálfar Dreki (Black Ark)
Kara Nightinglaes (Amazon)
Karak Azog Outlaws (Goblins)
Rotfall Ironworks Rocketeers (Clan Skryre)
Scions of Nerferata (Lahmian Vampire)
Wolf Lands Slavers (Hobgoblin Slavers)

A brief overview of each match, with the big play highlight, can be found below.

Game 1 vs Dark Room Delights (Slaanesh)
match link
The Delights are one of the hottest teams in CIBBL with a 19/5/2 record, and pipped as favourites to win the group, so a tough test for the Outcasts to open the season.

The Delights receive and have a pretty standard opening drive, moving in a cage side to side and down the pitch to an easy T8 score. Some swift defensive moves prevent any one turn attempt.

In the second half the Outcasts start strong removing plenty of Delights players, and threatening to score early and push for the win. But a strong reprisal from the Delights sees three Outcasts players removed in a single turn and suddenly even scoring is looking tricky.

*** Big Play Highlight ***
Sinnath Dreamhook spies a gap in the Outcasts defense and sprints towards Sarrion Gilqirelle in the backfield, dodging past the diving tackle of Galain and knocking Gilqirelle down!

Under pressure the Outcasts stars spring into action. Jérôme Jenfyre injures Drychassi Slendertouch and covers downfield, whilst Sarrion eludes the claws of the Slaanesh warrior to drop a simple pass into Eloise Galain's waiting hands as she sprints downfield into the clear.
*** Big Play Highlight ***

Galain would go on to evade an attempt at bringing her down and scored an equalizer.

Waystone Outcasts 1 - 1 Dark Room Delights

Game 2 vs Kara Nightingales (Amazon)
match link
The ladies of the Nightingales were another team with a ferocious record 20/5/8, and looked to outmuscle the Outcasts. With the rain pouring down and the Nightgales receiving the opening kickoff the Outcasts spirits were dampened, not to mention their poor hairdos!

A controlled drive from the Amazons saw them injure some Outcasts linemen and avoid a late sack attempt from blitzer Ariel Anstar to walk in the score. To start the second half the Outcasts sent their catchers deep and spread the play to try and avoid a scrum forming, but Sarrion Gilqirelle uncharacteristically failed to retrieve the kick first time and had to retreat deep after a later recovery. With little traction being made in the middle of the pitch, the Outcasts decided to try and score now and try and hold off the Nightingales for the rest of the half. A long bomb to Jennev Moire in traffic succeeded, and she dodged free to score.

The Nightingales struggled to collect the ball on the next kickoff, and the Outcasts had a dilemma of a choice; surge forward and try to disrupt the ball and score, or stay back and defend for the draw. They took the cowards approach and defended, and it was all smooth sailing until...

*** Big Play Highlight ***
With only two possible scoring threats left as time ticked down, all the Outcasts had to do was contain them. Jenfyre took care of one, and dauntless catcher Eloise Galain had a simple attempt to tackle Isabel Jaquinta

But in a very rare moment (1 in 216) she fails and stuns herself! The Nightingales sniff a chance, and make a dash to the halfway line where Bauci Imnuses heaves a ball deep towards the endzone, and into Jaquinta's arms!
*** Big Play Highlight ***

Waystone Outcasts 1 - 2 Kara Nightingales

Game 3 vs Karak Azog Outlaws (Goblins)
match link
These Goblins had an amazing Year 7, winning the Bronze division in Autumn as well as Deep Caverns regional in the Spring. Led by the mega-star pogoer Coke en stock they could be a real handful for the Outcasts.

The Outcasts elect to receive and flood the goblin backfield looking for a quick score. Sarrion secures the ball deep behind a solid screen, but the goblins are aggressive and their wizard strikes! Sarrion is on the floor and the ball is loose!
Coke en stock wastes no time dancing through the Outcasts screen and picking up the ball. Things look grim for the Outcasts, half their team is on the wrong side of the pitch, and they fail to bring the dastardly pogoer down. The goblins elect to stall though...

*** Big Play Highlight ***
The Outcasts try to pin Coke en stock into the corner, but he is slippery and Titus Onefoot's saw makes short work of blitzer Ariel Anstar.

The tide shifts with a failed foul and dodge from the goblins, and Sarrion lepas to her feet and knocks Coke en stock out, retrieving the ball also! The goblins are not done either though as Titus Onefoot dashes around the screen with the saw, but he loses control and the saw bites into his leg!
*** Big Play Highlight ***

The Outcasts score comfortably from there, and in the second half pressure the goblins into a quick score. On the next kickoff they easily push past the goblin defenses and get the ball deep, but clearly learnt nothing from the first half as their attempt to stall almost also ends in disaster as catcher Rylee Mareena is stunned by a bomb inches from the end zone, and a scrum ensues to recover it. Fortunately the crowd are on the Outcasts side as the ball going into touch is swiftly thrown straight back into Eloise Galain's arms, and she dashes in for the winning score.

Waystone Outcasts 2 - 1 Karak Azog Outlaws

Game 4 vs Wolf Lands Slavers (Hobgoblin Slavers)
match link
The Slavers are a team no one relishes facing. Led by imposing Mega-Star Sugz Snarlof, they tend to batter opponents into submission.

The action in this game was intense, and picking our Big Play Highlight was hard. Should it be the turn 1 steal of the ball by Sarrion Gilqirelle dodging into two tackle zones, making a pickup, and then a short pass over the heads of two hobgoblins, Rylee Mareena surving 4 blocks to keep the Slavers ball carrier pinned to the sideline, Eloise Galain's sack and injury of the Slavers ball carrier whilst it was caged, or Sugz Snarlof repeatedly knocking out Outcasts players only for them to keep coming back?

But the real turning point that set the tone for the game was this...

*** Big Play Highlight ***
We join the action on the Slavers final turn of the first half. Their carrier had been sacked the prior turn, but they still had a numbers advantage and many players near the endzone. Grimdore Chainbreaker easily pops the ball loose and Pokal Pigstrotz scoops up the ball, eying up a simple toss to Fleamish Flaggit for an equalizer.

... but he spills it into the crowd! Who still seem to love the Outcasts as they throw it beautifully into Sarrion's waiting arms. Rookie linemen Theo Meri had made a prescient move downfield, and it was simple for Sarrion to spiral a short pass to her as she walks into the endzone to put the Outcasts 2-0 up at halftime.
*** Big Play Highlight ***

The Outcasts added a further two scores in the second half as a blizzard comes down, a quick offensive score and then a second score by Theo Meri as Slavers star Schnal Sank pushes too hard for a consolation score and slips on the ice.

Waystone Outcasts 4 - 0 Wolf Lands Slavers

Game 5 vs Scions of Neferata (Lahmian Vampires)
match link
One of the older teams active in the league, with two legends of renown, Ahmose and Kentetenka. They have also been posting some great results with a recent 5-0 win over the Rotfall Ironworks Rocketeers.

This was never going to be a game about turgid offensive drives, and the Scions display that immediately with a quick 2 turn score to open the game. The Outcasts planned to reply in a similar manner but the light of Nuffle was shining on them as they removed multiple Scions players from the pitch in quick succession, allowing a slow grind to equalize at then end of the half.

With the Scions only able to field 7 players to start the second half the Outcasts were happy to push for quick score and aim to turnover the Scions to put the game away. A score behind, players behind, and on the receiving end of a blitz! kickoff things were looking dire for the Scions. The Outcasts catcher Eloise Galain secures the ball, but only briefly as Stefmau clatters her down. But only Kentetenka can reach the ball and she has to dash into the Outcasts backfield all alone!

*** Big Play Highlight ***
With Outcasts players swarming around Kentetenka, and none of her teammates able to come to her aid, the legend shows what she is made of...

...evading the diving tackle of Galain, pushing Jennev Moire aside, and dodging past, she streaks into the clear and scores to equalize!
*** Big Play Highlight ***

There is still time on the clock and the Outcasts are experts at the long pass to score, but things go disastrously as Sarrion Gilqirelle fumbles the ball, and Kentetenka and Stefmau have broken through the Outcasts line to threaten an incredible winning score for the Scions despite their numbers defecit.
Sarrion shows her mettle in tough situations, by scooping up the ball, releasing a beautiful pass to Ariel Anstar who dashes downfield and hands off to his fellow blitzer Jérôme Jenfyre who completes the end-to-end play with a game winning touchdown!

Waystone Outcasts 3 - 2 Scions of Neferata

Game 6 vs Rotfall Ironworks Rocketeers (Clan Skryre)
match link
Another tenured team, this would be their 99th CIBBL match! With the sun shining, the Rocketeers elected to receive, and proceeded to deliver a textbook offensive drive, removing an Outcasts player per turn (almost all KOs) and strolling in at the end of the half.

The Outcasts had just enough reserves to field 11 to start the second half, and the referees had turned a blind eye to the diabolical Skryre machines. Whilst the Outcast's coach had some stern words with the officials, the players set about scoring quickly, with a straightforward long pass from Sarrion Gilqirelle to catcher Jennev Moire, whilst also injuring two Rocketeer rats. This now left the Skryre team down to only 9 eligible players as the referees deigned to ban the massive Doomflayer.

The Rocketeers tried to use their speed to get the Outcasts defense out of position, but their numbers disadvantage made it hard. Sensing their chance at victory slipping away, they made a final thrust down the sideline, whilst sending mega-star Nikkin Gluepaw deep down the other flank as a receiving threat.

*** Big Play Highlight ***
With lots of players in contact the Outcasts need to decide if they want to respond to this additional threat, and captain Jérôme Jenfyre takes it upon himself to do so, and ensures Gluepaw will take no further part in the game.

With that dealt with, the Outcasts proceed to also remove the threat of the chainsaw, and cover the forward movement of ball carrier Krakshot Neek. The Iron Rat mecha vermin chunters forward to clear a path, but backup thrower Marley Deltix shoves a spike in its gears and it crashes to the ground! This leaves an easy surf into the crowd for Ariel Anstar.
*** Big Play Highlight ***

With only one player left standing for the Rocketeers it is simple enough for Sarrion Gilqirelle to pick up the loose ball and jog into the endzone for the game winning score.

Waystone Outcasts 2 - 1 Rotfall Ironworks Rocketeers

Game 7 vs Dökkálfar Dreki (Black Ark)
match link
The history between these teams goes back quite far, with the Dreki's original captain, Aeghir killed by Outcasts blitzer Jérôme Jenfyre on the way to winning their first meeting.
In their second meeting Dreki dreadblade Frøya, who had sworn vengeance against Jenfyre, led the way for the Dreki as they won 2-1. Sadly she was lost in the Summer Season, so who will shine in this 3rd meeting?

The game begins with the Outcasts receiving, but despite an early removal from Jenfyre the Outcasts really struggle to progress. Their blocks are ineffectual and the Dreki do a great job in containing them and putting pressure on their flanks. They spy a slight opening late in the half, with the majority of the Dreki players off to one side, the Outcasts push towards the opposite sideline and setup a screen around Sarrion. The Dreki do another great job in blocking their forward progress, but perhaps covered too much, as the Outcasts shift the play to the opposite flank with a pass from Sarrion to Eloise Galain. From here it is a simple matter of Jenfyre clearing corsair Hefring out of the way so Galain can dash in for the score.

Unusually for the Dreki they had been the team to dominate the hitting, and were able to field 11 to start the second half. But then normal service was resumed as they lost a player a turn...

*** Big Play Highlight ***
... so star doomreaver Himminglaeva decides to show off some fancy footwork and dance through the Outcasts defenders to pick up the equalizer!

*** Big Play Highlight ***

This had left the Outcasts with much of the second half left to score, and so another sterling defensive drive was needed from the Dreki. It started well with a deep kick out of range for Sarrion to retrieve easily, and then Star Player Nerea the Abyssal Queen bashing through the line and on to Sarrion. Seeing her approaching Sarrion deftly hands off to blitzer Ariel Anstar who dashes downfield with teammates screening. The Dreki manage to get Draugen's kraken helm to try and hold Anstar, but he breaks free and scores a simple touchdown to win the game!

Waystone Outcasts 2 - 1 Dökkálfar Dreki

And so a very successful Autumn season ends for the Outcasts with a 5-1-1 record, scoring 15 TDs, conceding just 8, and finishing 2nd, as that loss to the Kara Nightingales proved costly as they topped the table just 1pt ahead!
