New League thought?
Everyone has an obsession with short game total, short term leagues. I've always liked the drama of the long game count leagues in real sports, such as the NHL (82 games), MLB (162), or even most of the major Euro footy leagues (usually 38, such as the EPL and Serie A).

Now clearly, an 82 game season is out of the question, but I like the drama associated with a very long league with either short playoffs for a champion, or just a 30+ game season with all the late season pushes and such... I just find that playing 7 or 10 games doesn't do it. It's hard to change a season after one team runs out to an early lead, or another just gets creamed early.

Is there anyone out there besides me, who'd be willing to put in a 4 or 5 month campaign? Can I find even a dozen players willing to try to stick with something like that over some serious time? I think it has potential to be at least a little different... Or perhaps there is a league like that already in existence? Can someone point me to that?

I could do a long campaign. Maybe a game a week for months as long as it was UK time based.

Great idea. This was the original vision for the OBBA. Sad thing is though, that attention spans aren't long enough.

So in theory, it's great.

In practice, it's doomed from the start.

I'd be up for this, obviously depending on the time zone. I think it sounds cool, but I can also see the problems with it.

I guess one of the troubles is if you try to be strict about a weekly schedule, there would be games which I (and I guess many others too) would have to forfeit due to holidays, etc. The advantage of a shorter league is that you can sit out for a season if it will clash with a difficult period.

All good points made below. I would be interested in this type of venture.

Maybe with a 10 day deadline 30-36 games would be possible over the course of a year. Or if fewer teams were in a division, the league could run through (once or twice) then run a KO Cup, the return to the league but use both sets of results to determine the winner etc.

Extensions may be manageable for a 10 day deadline to cover holidays/sickness/RL etc, so long as the games were caught up quickly by the next deadline.

i would be interested in this too & just wondering but is there any leagues out there which runs there cup during the season like a football(soccer) league would.

I;d be willing to play in this league. Quite happy to :D

I note alot of OBBA coaches :D. All fair points. The idea had been 7 or 10 day rounds, and I was leaning towards probably 2 open round robin tournies, with some form of cup in the middle, or a playoff at the end. I was actually rather surprised to get even 1 positive response, let alone several, and one luke warm one!

to be completely honest, this is one of the two things that drew me to bloodbowl in the first place (the other being randomness of the game itself) but my life is in too much turmoil right now to commit to thta as of yet.

Interested.

The reason I like the short term ones are due to the frequency of the games - not having to wait 2 weeks to play my next games against someone on holiday.

I suggest to make it work yo do home and away matches - reducing the amount of coaches required or one league, whilst still keeping up the number of games played ;)

Brilliant concept, I like the idea, but the Timezone thing would do me in.

Good luck in getting it set up.

yes

i'm with you on this one DM.

i'd say a 7 day turn around. 12 teams, home and away, 22 game season. no playoffs (cos they is stupid).

I'm in.

*CAUTION* Smart-ass comment to follow:

I'd be interested in seeing if you could actually play a 4-5 month campaign without getting sick of FUMBBL or your team or just plain out disappearing, DMaw ;)

*CAUTION* Smart-ass remark to follow.

I'd just be interested to see if you can not be a (insert favorite non-FUMBBL compliant name here) for more than 2 conversations!

That said, the people who know me from OBBA had me for 7 seasons, spanning something like 2 years, with only 1 or 2 concessions, and only one team before I had to drop because of computer issues.

DM, am happy to work with you on this if need be.

I have to agree with Chewie. BB coaches on the whole are not a reliable bunch (excluding the hardcore [L] element that many leagues already draw from), throw RL into the mix and the league will be strife with unplayed games in a scheduled format.

With the death of Faction, and once CRP was integrated into [L], I thought that a new Open environment might be the way to go in [L], where teams rack up points in the traditional method with a few caveats based upon the league/division size:

e.g. if you had one large open with 30+ teams, you might want to have Neg points accrued for breaking the following:

X number of games maximum per season
You can't play the same race more than x in a season.

From there on you can add a final KO playoff tourney for the top teams.

Or you could split the league into divisions, two divisions of 20 teams where everyone is required to play 12 games.

...

Of course, this league would require a reasonable amount of players but the beauty is a few stragglers won't bring it to a halt.

It might also require a little more administration although you'll save some time on not having to sort scheduling disputes and there are a number of automated tools that might help.

The international league sort of does this. Though it is broken down into lots of smaller competitions. However a season seems to last of an eternity what with all the cups champions league world cups etc....

I would thoroughly welcome a longer season League. I suspect that some coaches may be disheartened and less likely to fulfil their game commitments when they find themselves 10 points adrift at the foot of the table with another 20 games still to play, but on the whole L coaches should be reasonably reliable, especially if you choose wisely.

Problem is gathering enough commited coaches so that everyone else's time is not wasted.
