Sturoot Scott: Welcome to DSPN, the Dukes Wood Sports and Plants Network, bringing you the finest athletics and horticultural coverage from the Dukes Wood Forest. I’m Sturoot Scott, and with me as always, my offshoot from another oak root, Chrys Burtree.
Chrys Burrtree: Up later on the big show, stunning footage of wisteria growing up the eastern side of a stone.
Chrys Burrtree: But first, some exciting highlights from the Duqueswood University Green Dukes NCBB Season 47 blood bowl opener vs. the UC Binturongs.
Sturoot Scott: It’s the start of a new chapter for blood bowl in the Duqueswood, with former VP of Student Safety Baerys Pondripple taking over coaching duties from Gerric Smithson, and focusing primarily on his players not dying.
Chrys Burrtree: Interesting strategy. Not sure that’s even possible, but an elf can dream.
Sturoot Scott: Let’s pick things up in the rain-soaked first half with the Bintourongs threatening deep in Green Dukes’ territory. But … looks like they leave a crack a crack here giving shifty Deathwyntyr Whitebranch the chance to take down the ball carrier, even with that injured arm from last season.
Chrys Burrtree: You love to see it! Whoop! Whoop! And ... Whooooop!
Sturoot Scott: He leaps and dodges his way in on the ball carrier here, cooler than the other side of the leaf, and then … completely fail to make the block. Not sure if this kind of not-blocking is all part of Coach Pondripple’s new safety-first approach.
Chrys Burrtree: Yeah, apparently, he is rebranding the team’s wardancers as “peace dancers” this season.
Sturoot Scott: Either way, the failed block allows junior catcher Faluvio Cyton to waltz in for the TD putting UC up 1-0.
Duqueswood would quickly threaten to tie with thrower Phaedry Featherwind hitting Sophomore Kooper Kwick with a perfect pass near midfield, but then a key caging mistake by Coach Pondripple here leaves Kwick open for a backside blitz and ooh …
Chrys Burrtree: To quote my former colleague Treeith Treeberman, “The other team’s catcher must go down and he must go down hahd.”
Sturoot Scott: Right into the mud.
Chrys Burrtree: It’s OK though, he’s a history of dirt major, so this was ... research
Sturoot Scott: With the ball loose on the wet field, the Bintourongs opted to surround it to just prevent the score, but then a block here from Featherwind opens a possibility for senior lineman Lyric Birdsong, and …
Chrys Burrtree: He … could … go … all … the … way!
Sturoot Scott: And Birdsong ties it up 1-1.
Now we pick things up in the second half, where Duqueswood is playing shorthanded because two players have been tossed from the game for some nasty fouls.
Chrys Burrtree: Wait, fouling, how does that fit in with Coach Pondripple’s safety-first approach?
Sturoot Scott: Well, actually, Pondripple’s very pro-fouling. He said after the game the safest way to hit your opponent is when they’re already on the ground. And speaking of the ground, a key dodging error here sends Whitebranch to the turf.
Chrys Burrtree: Yikes, a wardancer—I mean, peacedancer—tripping on a dodge, everyone just hates to see that.
Sturoot Scott: Well, everyone except dwarves, and orcs …
Chrys Burrtree: And humans … and any of the undead teams … beastmen, lizardmen, chaos …
Sturoot Scott: Right, basically anyone who’s not a wood elf. So, yeah, let’s take look at that again, and … again … and again.
Chrys Burrtree: Ooh, that definitely looks painful. Can we see it one more time.
Sturoot Scott: OK, well that miscue looked to seal the win for UC, as junior catcher Faluvio Cyton has the ball deep in Green Dukes territory, poised for the game-winning score. But …
Chrys Burrtree: Nobody circles the branches like the Duqueswood University Green Dukes ….
Sturoot Scott: And Birdsong, who just had a monster game, catches Cyton from behind, knocking the ball loose for sophomore thrower Gilwyn Windhand to get a hold of it and heave a prayer up field.
Chrys Burrtree: Yep, here’s where things get as wild as a patch of Loren forest crabgrass. UC’s Tytozkar Koral makes a heck of a play, batting the ball away, but it lands right at the roots of Sophomore Treeman Mirlin Weatherborn, setting up this final sequence.
Sturoot Scott: As UC opts to stay far away from the ball and Weatherborn’s banches, Duqueswoon sets up a desperation hail fairy pass, and …
Chrys Burrtree: Junior catcher Zindari Dawnwind goes back back back back back, and comes down with the catch.
Sturoot Scott: Tree-yah! The Duqueswood University Green Dukes win their first game of the season in shocking, come-from-behind fashion.
Chrys Burrtree: Great stuff from those kids, and perhaps most shocking of all … no one died
