Current development projects for FUMBBL
Since most people have their pet peeves on what should be changed for the site, here's a quick list showing some of my currently prioritised projects, and a quick description and vision for each. Note that these are not listed in any particular order.

LFG page
For a while, I've been wanting to redesign the LFG page with the intent of simplifying the process of starting a game. What I want to do is to have a process where you as a coach selects which teams to play and the page displays a set of potential opponents for each team. At this point, you choose if you want to accept or decline a match and once two coaches have accepted a match, you and your opponent confirm the game and the client is launched.

I've done a proof of concept page for myself earlier and with the Java backend server I have set up recently, I have the tools I need to make it work available to me. However, it's a somewhat large project both in terms of user interface and back-end functionality.

League changes
This project is quite large and involves giving leagues much greater flexibility. What I want to do is to give league organisers the ability to set up custom rulesets (progression, rosters, prizes) for their leagues and tournaments. I've given more detail on this in an earlier blog.

This is a singificantly complex project and is currently still in the planning phases. One thing I want to ensure is making it easy to connect groups and share rulesets and allow teams to move between these groups. This could for example be used to separate divisions in a larger league, or allowing multiple leagues to share popular rulesets. Again, complex and fairly far from completion.

Team page refresh
This is an extension of the project to implement a new theme. I want to refresh the visual aspect of the team page and get rid of some fairly archaic limitations. For example, I want coaches to be able to move players around in teams at will instead of having to deal with whichever number the player had at the time of purchase. You can find a visual (unfinished) concept of the updated team page here.

Still a lot of work to be done, but I'm happy with how it's turning out so far.

Coach page refresh
This is another similar project, where I want to refresh the coach pages. One thing I'm contemplating is to separate your own coach page from other people's pages. This would allow a bit more intelligent display of relevant statistics on other people's pages (for example head to head record, their latest blogs etc) while allowing me to display things relating to your circle of friends on your own page.

This is again a fairly large amount of UI work, which is both hard and time-consuming.

Academy division
This is another project I've already posted about in the past. What I want to do with this project is to give coaches ability to quickly get into games using standard teams. The purpose would be to quickly get a game to get used to the client and how things work.

The status here is that I'm waiting for support for "global" teams in the client.

Top lists
Top lists are a bit awkward at the moment. They consume a lot of resources, and are a bit on the slow side. What I want to do is to move the handling of the top lists into Java space, allowing me to utilise caching to a greater degree in order to maintain performance while reducing the amount of resources these top lists need.

Awards
Awards are another issue where they started out as one thing and have developed into something else. Effectively, I need to redesign them entirely from scratch to give me the ability to add divisional awards in an efficient manner. Again, this will be easier in Java-space than in PHP.

Stunty
With the stunty division going to LRB6, there's a fair amount of work to be done to get the division up to speed. On my end, this is mainly ensuring that icons get added properly, and looking into the matter of default portraits. From a higher perspective, it also means continuing supporting the changes that need to be done for on the rosters and supporting tournaments when that time comes.

That covers most of the large development projects I have on my current todo list. Feel free to respond with your ideas on these topics, and also any other things you'd like to see for the site on the long term. My main concern is to improve the enjoyment of the site for everyone and effectively increase the traffic on the site (as measured by number of games played).

I am not in charge of client development, and therefore can't state when new updates to it will be released.

Love the idea for the lfg page. Keep up the great work.

Sandboxed leagues so that a coach or coaches could set up a league controlling as many teams as they want each BUT none of these teams could play outside of their particular sandbox to avoid cheating and foulplay in terms of development.

Too much work for too little reward for it to ever happen but I would love it if it did.

mouthwatering stuff this. worth the wait! the social circle feature is especially intriguing.

And since you ask, I am really looking forward to the upgrades to League. Maybe a thing that could be added is a league table feature that applies to a whole group. Like Shraaaag's amazing "NBBM Regional" script that makes a running table out of all the games played between the 100+ teams in the group. Kind of resembles Koadah's sprints, but that can in addition be tweaked by an admin and for example add points if a team plays vs a variety of races, minus for casualties (in an elf league) etc.

Having a function that can play two teams from totally different leagues in a sort of "final tournament" would also be cool. For example, the SWL champion could play the NWL champion, and when the SWL team eventually wins, the winner gets one of the opposing players as a trophy (to be added to the roster, or ass assistant coach).

Another thing that would be nice, is some incentives to play something else then TV adjusted min/max in Blackbox. Thinking graphical accolades on your coach profile along the line of the "Fumbbl Supporter", only slightly less prominent. E.g. an accolade for playing several different races etc.

These all look great. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this site, Christer.

MANLOVE!
Posted by Russo on 2012-02-16 19:48:01
All brilliant ideas.

The first two listed are probably the ones that will make the biggest impact to the site.

Looking for Game and League changes will not only help quicker match-ups but also allow the host of excellent leagues to implement some of their ideas. I know that many coaches in OBBA for a long time have liked the idea of a potential Champions Legaue style link up with another League.

Awesome. I can easily see League play doubling quickly as soon as custom rosters are available. I would happly donate to move that as the highest priority item. (Custom rules are also appealing, but custom roster would really rock!)

Great to hear from BigC and what is going on. I just hope that these projects are not too big and we wont see anyone of them completed in a near future. Maybe you are taking on too many big projects instead of focus on fewer projects?

For impact on increasing games played, I think that LFG page and League changes will have the biggest impact.

You talk about custom rulesets. My request is most likely aimed towards Kalimar and the rest of the team developing the client, but would it be possible with custome rulesets also to edit skills so that forexample that you could add that MB does +2 instead of +1? Or even be able to add or remove skills based on current features a skill can have. And finely also if you could make for Chaos Pact linemen that S would become a double to take?

I appreciate the work and please do keep it up :)

For me, the most interesting changes are the gamefinder and league rules/format.

That said, it's all awesome, thanks for all your hardword.

P.S. Loving the new team page!

As always, great ideas and work, Christer.

Good projects. :) I have one idea to make blackbox pairings more interesting. I mean that the teams somewhere above 1750 TV almost every time got paired against Chaos or Nurgle races, randomly changed by CD. Of course it is frustrating that my team suffers great losses in such cases. But more and more is annoying the fact that there is no variety of oponents. Personaly for me it is very boring to get the same oponent (race) every time. Perhaps equaly to the fear of losses to clawpomb combinations.
So maybe ther could be a technical posibility to mark 1 (or even 2) race which you don't wanna play (optionaly) when activating? I understand that it would decrease randomness, but I think it would help to increase the variety of teams. And chaos with nurgles... well they can get themselves if no one wants to play them.
Just a suggestion.

Well, i reread Christers posts from previous years just to refresh my thinking.

Quick summary: i dont beleive any type of cherrypicking will be allowed in box. Christer argued that the main appeal of bbox is the competitive nature, so that you HAVE to play against the best teams.
I take his opinion granted, and think further. Lets simply assume that those 3 teams are best. Then i suggest that the bbox pairing method should make the best team harder to win by allowing bigger TV difference in favour of the opponent of orc/cd/dwarf.

I totally get that there is a formula to balance. However it does not serve the desire for variety. So i suggest that the formula punishes the most played races in a dynamic way. (If all orcs are played this week, then huge punishment in TV for next week. If next week no orc, then remove the punishment, etc.)

awesome stuff!
Posted by zakatan on 2012-03-08 10:46:31
it saddens me a bit to see that compatibility with custom icons isn't in your list :(

great to see that things are moving forward though. This site is going from awesome to most awesome!
