Box vs Ranked: Get ready for the FUMBBL Cup!
<Bragging starts here>

I've been playing Orcs in the Box for a while now, and my only purpose was to create a tournament ready team. My second or third attempt was the good one, and the team is as ready as a Box team can be. I'm not going to play them until the FUMBBL Cup since I'm pretty sure to be matched up with cPOMB heavy teams, which would be a recipe for disaster (NB: I have nothing against cPOMB, but I also want to keep this team in a good shape for the FC). One has to know when to stop prepping.

<Bragging ends here>

But when I look at that team, I find it boring. Sure, there are fancy stats, and I've spammed the most important skills IG, but there's nothing that makes it special. And it pretty much sums up how I build teams in the Box, unfortunately. I am for instance very likely to skip doubles on a BoB to take Block, Guard, or MB instead. In Ranked, I would have picked DT. If I look at the team I entered last year, my Ranked Orcs (who got crushed by Azure's clawless dorfs), I find it so much more interesting. There were just as many +stats (on the blitzers / linemen), but they also had some extra skills that brought another dimension to the team - in that case, 3 Diving Tacklers that could completely lock the positioning game.

But it's not the only difference between both teams. If the New Waaaagh Order was a Ranked team, I would play a few more games to skill that last BoB, or even to try to get a few of them to 51 SPP for MB or BT. I may hire one or two more lino and try to give them DP as well. And maybe Kick.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying one division is better than the other. And I'm not saying Ranked Orc coaches are pickers: anyone who has ever played a 2000TV Orc team in Ranked knows you won't find any game except against other bashers. But in the meantime, you can choose to avoid cPOMB spam teams in Ranked when you're preparing for a tourney.

No, the question is: who has the advantage in the FUMBBL Cup: the Box teams who are not penalized for taking some of the strongest skills IG (Guard spam, Blodge spam, CPOMB spam, etc), or the Ranked teams who can develop further than the Box teams without fearing the next game may be the last one? Is there any stats showing how well both divisions do in combined tournaments?

Good to know that I recently beat your choice of bragging!

"Boring" builds have the advantage of being easier to play. Their redundancy makes them more reliable too. As a newbie, it also speeds up my games.

OTOH, a good coach could be able to create surprising mayhem using fancy skills. Diving Tackle might only shine in a tournament setting, where winning matters.

@ bghandras: yeah, surprisingly, Norses are this team's nemesis. Not sure why tbh.

At least they won the Cas game (not a surprise when you know their Cas record). ;)

@ thoralf: there's another reason. In the Box, you must survive. DT doesn't help with that (most of the time, at least), Guard does.

Both of those teams have outstanding CAS record. Actually very similar to each other, both are just a tad under 4 CAS inflicted per game on average.

Box teams in the FC the advantages of lower TV, so they get inducment money, most of them tend to be bash and heavy bash.

But they are usually running 11-13 man rosters and are not flexible as a team when it comes to skills and then run a lot less +STAT upgrades to keep TV low.

Ranked teams give up inducment money generally to Box teams but have larger rosters, more flexibility on skill ups and carry a lot more +Stat on the rosters. The +STAT is important in a KO format because in the end it is all about winning.

The two divs based on previous results are IMO very balanced. No one really has an advantage because of the random draw nature of the tournament. The draw of the tournament plays a big influence on the tournament as it shakes down in the later rounds. Once we get down to 64 or less one or two teams will have a inside track for the final 4. Which Div that team plays in, no clue.

There is definitely way too much noise in the ratio to signal to say either way who has a better shot at the trophy.

If there's one thing I've learned anyway about sports and whatnot, it's that attempting to analyze the chaos of a single elimination tournament is a fruitless endeavor anyway.

3 +ST BOBs... with Guard too. That's one tough LoS! Luckily low on the Mighty Blow (luckily for the others that is).

Good luck!

Just sorry the Champions were such a soft challenge last up. 8]

The Box ones are optimized to play in a clawpomb environment, the ranked ones aren't. As the tourney is both, your benefit will depend largely on the draw. =)

Then again, +ST guard and pomb tackle will also work against elves and rats and such. What will really screw your team over is a 16 player TV 1900 skaven team with a natural oneturner... but then who wouldn't be screwed over by that? (well, maybe someone with 4 or 5 x diving tackle =D )
