Glue v Stitches
After 15 of retirement I decided to take up playing rugby again. Fantastic, loving every minute of it, despite the recovery afterwards. There is nothing quite like a little ducking, weaving and Maori sidestepping over your opposite number and then squeeze balling through you legs with 3 of your opponents piled on over your face.

pfttt. sorry that is just a bit of grass from yesterday :-)

Any how, half way into the season I decided to help one of the other teams out. Being Vets or Golden Oldies we sometimes need to help the other old farts make up their numbers. So one game under my belt and 85% knackered I pulled on one of their jumpers and took to the field for another run.

Growing up I was used to all manner of hurts and injuries. Every game had the tell tail train tracks and torn jumpers from rucking down my back and welts on the thighs. I have had broken bones, torn ligaments and pulled muscles but yesterday was a first.

There I was standing about 2 metres away from a tackle, totally obvious to the possibility that a player could be up ended and somehow propelled in a manner it which both boots could make full "stud first" contact with me. One boot raking across me chest and the other, making full contact with my face.

Any how back to the Subject Line. I have now discovered that doctors prefer to use superglue instead of stitches to join lips back together. "Too ragged to stitch properly and this is much better" he says, "and don't touch it with your tongue!" Seemingly it is all too easy to have a your tongue stuck to your lip if you are too quick to have a feel :-O

Well it is a Bye next week and then its once more unto the breach to gain some more bruises. Hopefully I will impart more than I receive.

Superglue was actually invented to glue soldiers back together in the vietnam or korean war. I believe, medically it passes in and out of fashion. It is very popular with vets I think, for gluing dog ears that have been torn.

I had my lip split and depending on how large the split is, depends on what they do. Lips however are difficult.

The very difficult part is the curve (I've forgotten the name, something cleft I think) just where the lip part ends. This is extremely hard to recreate, and you see a lot of people with this damage.

I also have had a fair few injuries, this (and other injuries I sustained at the time) was certainly the most traumatic.

I had to go to 3 different hospitals, to get sorted ending up in the hands of the plastic surgeons at chelsea and westminster. I'm pretty thankful of the job they did, and now I only have the faintest of scars there, and below my eye and no damage to my whatever cleft!

I played rugby for some years back in my early teens :) was a wonderful time, but I dont think my body would forgive me if I went back to playing it ;)

Actually the worst thing was not the lip.... a few beers back at the clubhouse with the boys (and their wives) helped out a lot.

NO it was all the blood swelling in my left foot that did me in. Was barely able to walk to the car (nothing to do with the drink, please I gave up the 10 bottles and then driving lark years ago) and driving home was almost impossible. Depressing the clutch was a motion of agony.

Got home and had a bath...... big mistake for the foot. Great for everything else.

Foot boot in ice bath.... smothered in Voltarin and then bandaged it up for a little RICE treatment. Almost had to crawl to the bedroom cause i couldn't walk.

Must have worked because it is almost OK now.

I must be getting old!
