Goblins 2.0 Converting blog – Part 1
After months of painting nothing but dice it is nice to get back to working on models again. PeteW has asked me to do him a goblin team based on the new range from GW. I had previously done a goblin team using the Greebo circus goblins. That team turned out fine but there was little conversion needed for them aside from some the stars and markers.

I’ve bought the goblin team, booster pack, 2 trolls and the weapons from Forgeworld. However I hate just using standard models so also raided my bitz box and bought some other parts off e-bay to personalise the team.

The core of the team will be the normal goblins, there are 6 unique bodies for these and they come with interchangeable heads which allows for a fair bit of variety. The first 6 goblins are just the standard models with no changes so I have not bothered taking pics of them.

The other 8 players are all converted in some way. These 4 goblins are have very simple changes where I swapped their arms over, this required a little trimming and greenstuff as sadly GW is making their models less modular now. I chopped decoration off some of the heads to add a bit more variety as well.

These 4 goblins were a bit more different as they used parts from other models. Some had 40K or forgeworld heads and others more complicated arms swaps. The most interesting player is the goblin running with the ball, he uses the arms from the goblin that is being picked up by the troll. I am going to swap the hands for the 2nd troll so these bits along with the head were scavenged.

I like the look of the new plastic troll but am not a fan of the pose, mainly the left arm. So for the first troll I largely kept the model unchanged, I did swap the goblin head from a 40K grot with goggles as it made him a more suitable flyer. I’ll also reposition the left arm so it is at his side and will either greenstuff the shoulder to fill the gaps or hide it with a shoulder pad.

When it comes to the weapons Pete wanted the following; looney, fanatic, pogo, bomber and doom diver. He also wanted another fanatic to use as Fungus.

I got the new forgeworld weapons to use as the bomber, looney and fanatic. I thought the hockey mask was a bit cliché for the looney and decided to swap it for a welders mask from a grot. The ball and chain looked a bit fragile for the fanatic so I swapped the resin ball for a plastic one from the stormfiends. The bomber was left as he was.

I assume Forgeworld will be bringing out another pack for the 3 remaining weapons, but no idea when that will happen so I decided to make my own.
For the doom diver I used one of the grots from the Ork Stormboyz range. I swapped his arm for that of a normal goblin and his leg from another grot.
The pogoer was a biker grot I bought a while back, it was him I had taken the leg from. I chopped off his weapon arm and replaced that with one from a player and gave him the head of another grot. His left leg came from a crypt ghoul missed with the foot from another grot. The stand and spring were from a 40K electro priest weapon from my bitz box.
Pete didn’t want an ooligan as they are a bit rubbish, but as I am wanting to paint up all the teams I decided to make one anyway. One of the Grot heads I bought had a bandana and a forest goblin torso looked like it had a beer gut. His left hand will have the finger moved so he is making a rude gesture. I am thinking of swapping in the legs from a normal goblin painted to look like jeans and removing his right arm to replace it with one holding either a beer or a weapon.

I am still considering my options for the 2nd fanatic/Fungus. I have the classic GW model which is nice but doesn’t really fit the modern aesthetic, I also have the Willy miniatures model but he is made from a very soft metal and I am concerned he won’t survive long on the tabletop. I do have some plastic chains and the resin ball that could be used to make a ball and chain providing I can find the right body.

I have also been working on the colour scheme for the team. I did like the black tops that the example GW team had and kept this, leaving the brighter colouring for the armour pieces. Initially I also went for brown shorts and off white accessories but felt this was too close to GW’s and ended up swapping these over.
I initially wanted to go for light blue as that was a colour I had not used much, but that looked too clean and cuddly for goblins. I then tried teal for all armour pieces as I hadn’t used that before, which looked ok but Pete was not a fan and suggested purple or pink. I ruled out pink as it would end up soft like the blue, but did have a couple of nice purples from the nurgle team I did a while back.

Finally I had a nice bit of news this week. I’d been marking some of my Instagram pic with the #paintingwarhammer hashtag and it seems someone from GW saw them. The 2 skaven throwers I painted for the NAF GT 2017 team are now featured on the GW site along with several other fan painted models. You can see them in the skaven team part of the site.

Not a fan of the new models, but always interested to see what you cook up!

Nice work

Good work Spubbbba, looking forward to seeing them painted.

A nice job becoming a minor GW celeb :-), that Skaven team was also bloody nicely painted.

You make extraordinary work on a daily basis. I wish I had 1/10th of your talent back when I did some painting.
