Wäŋa Warriors Ascendancy: Part Two, Theories to Realities
Mass Guard over anything: As I built my side I saw immediate results with the huge amount of Guard. By the time I was up around the 170 mark, the value of choosing mass Guard diminishes. This is largely because it is generally going to be the first, second or third skill for anyone with strength access, so they have a lot of it too. However, I generally had more, and it gave me the advantage I wanted.

No Piling on or Mighty Blow: I was never going to take Piling on and I am glad that I didn't. Yes it is a good skill, but it wouldn't fit my side. However, early on it was obvious what benefits Mighty Blow would do to my side. It relies on strength: and the only thing better than having more Guard than them, is having more players then them. So I decided to take one Mighty Blow on my main the blitzer and it worked really well. I then took it on two Black Orcs to help with those intense blocking wars. This was all that I took, less then most sides, but it made a huge difference.

Of course the boys paid me out for selling out on my concept, but I deserve that.

Mass Stand Firm & a bit of Tackle: Mass Stand Firm was a lot harder to implement then I thought. (It makes me sad that so many people want to try to really work with positional skills like Stand Firm and Grab but it clearly isn't optimal). I needed Block and Guard, and I was shorter on tackle than I thought. Add some Mighty Blow that I wasn't expecting, and suddenly Stand Firm is quite difficult to implement. But I still managed to get a fair bit of Stand Firm. My winning side had it on three Blitzers and two Black Orcs.

Diving Tackle over Dodge: When I first had this side I rolled very few doubles. I used to keep count but I have lost it, going back I've had 66 skill rolls with 5 double skills taken. There are a few stats in there, and one or two doubles I ignored as they were first skills for Black Orcs. I'm not complaining due to the stat boosts I received . But I didn't end up with a lot of diving tackle. The side only had three, but it made a huge difference containing fast sides. I definitely recommend this.

No Throwers as Blitzers carry the ball: It works great as a developed side. But when you are starting out it is pretty difficult. It isn't the Sure Hands, it is the fact that one of your Block players can't join the fray, as he is sitting back with the ball. But as soon as you are high enough, say over 160, you will have enough Block around that it won't matter. When you close in on 200, I don't think you should be anywhere near a thrower.

Frenzy as a late skill: I have found it basically impossible. My boys don't seem to live that long, at least, I haven't gotten a legend yet. Add in some stats and mighty blow, I just haven't been able to take it. I really want to though. I keep deciding I will take it 'next' and then I need some tackle or roll a double or something else. Soon I hope to get a few. I still can't really figure out if it is better on a Blitzer or a Black Orc. I want someone mobile to patrol the lines, but I really would prefer it on someone who is st4, it just adds so much. Soon!

Next time – the Stat Freaks that made it possible, and how it melded into my side

PS. Seriously though, trying to win Prem without Mighty Blow, what in Lustria was I thinking?

Interesting read, I've always felt Guard and Stand Firm together should be a pain in the ass to deal with for any opponent. Glad you took it to the test! I'll remember when skilling up my orcs. What I really wonder: how good would a lot of Grab be with this?

If you mean 'in place of stand firm' that could be very interesting. You would lose some movement from a lack of stand firm, but you could really place everyone exactly where you need to, to really maximise that guard, and the quantity of blocks you would get. If you 'as well as stand firm' then you would have to see the issue with frenzy. Blitzers might be able to pull it off with... Guard, tackle, mighty blow, stand firm, diving tackle, and grab as a legend. But it's an uphill battle
