First Day Teaching
Taught English in a kindergarten in China for the first tine today. After I arrived in the classroom and sat down, and the following conversation took place:
Me: Hello.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Hello.
Me: How are you?
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: How are you?
Me: My name is Mal.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: My name is Mal.
Me: You.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: You.
Me: Are.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Are.
Me: Going.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Going.
Me: To.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: To.
Me: Say.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Say.
Me: Everything.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Everything.
Me: I.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: I.
Me: Say.
30 Chinese kids aged 4 and 5: Say.
Then I decided to do something useful.

Well drilling won't be a problem then.
The thing to do in this situation is use hand gestures (I'm guessing it's a mono-lingual environment).
Teach them a speak and stop gesture, then drill as you were stop them and teach the rest.
As an example with names: 'My name is Mal' 'My name is' (stop gesture) then demo the full pattern with 1 or 2, hopefully the rest will click the added bit is their names, and it should fall into place.
Chinese kids are weird though in that they all have a western name, which tend to change now and then.
