The nature of dice complaining
There's been a phenomenon I've noticed where as soon as one player starts complaining about their dice, their dice inexplicably get better. One could fallaciously believe that the mere act of complaining alters the dice but the more logical and likely answer as to why we see this is the following:

Coaches usually don't complain in earnest until they have hit some sort of personal tolerance on the amount of unfortunate dice outcomes. It is somewhat likely that by the time a coach hits a point of remarking on bad luck, they have exhausted that run of bad luck in the random seed.

What can we take away from this?

If you're about to complain about dice, you needn't do so, you're already at rock bottom.

Wouldn't the most logical consequence be to complain as early as possible (potentially already about the FAME rolls), since the dice will instantly get better?
Posted by licker on 2014-09-11 00:16:51
That's what I do.

I complain about the weather dice.
Posted by mrt1212 on 2014-09-11 00:18:08
Unfortunately if you're complaining about FAME rolls, you're probably insufferable to play against in the first place and any general ideas about psychological tolerance for bad luck are thrown out the window.
Posted by Uedder on 2014-09-11 00:18:21
In my experience it's not complaining, like "PFFFT, how many double skulls am i gonna roll??". That kind of thing won't bring you luck.

What actually does spin the wheel is when someone complains like a 10years old would, and gets mad at the opponent. something like "Oh, you're so lucky. You can't play, but you'll win. If I had only half decent dices I'd rip you open.".

When someone tells something like that (usually he's not even having bad luck, just poor planning), he will roll consecutive 6s that will possibly lead to an otherwise impossible TD.

The guy usually reacts saying "it was about time!" after his -ag rotter completed a long bomb, leaving the opponent speechless.
Posted by dode74 on 2014-09-11 00:18:50
Regression to the mean.

Unfortunately that does feck all to the timing of the bad rolls.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-09-11 00:28:26
If I snake the fan factor roll, I'm gonna make sure my opponent knows about it.

All...

Bloody...

Effing...

Game!

To be fair Uedder, some people (myself) live for the longshot play, just so we can annoy people who play by the book and don't let you forget that they do. Nothing angers good coaches who have a lot of games under their belt like 5+ passes with 4+ catches, 3+ Dodges and 2 GFIs.
Posted by Cavetroll on 2014-09-11 00:35:02
Everyone knows that nuffle rewards crying about the dice with better dice. No matter how much they resist, most coaches have given into this when they have hit their personal tolerance level. Is it because nuffle cares about the crying coach? No! It's because he wants to hear both coaches cry.
Posted by mrt1212 on 2014-09-11 00:50:43
That's the fluff explanation
Posted by MonkeyMan576 on 2014-09-11 01:30:21
Since blood bowl is a game of risk management, any decent coach should know that bad dice are temporary. Whining just indicates a lack of respect for the other coach.
Posted by JackassRampant on 2014-09-11 02:10:06
My superstition says there are moments. "Wow, I just can't break armor," *when true*, is an invitation for Nuffle to grant me some Cas. But other times, not so much. Call me crazy, but I think I can sometimes feel it coming (or not).
Posted by JackassRampant on 2014-09-11 02:11:05
"Since blood bowl is a game of risk management, any decent coach should know that bad dice are temporary. Whining just indicates a lack of respect for the other coach." -- or a sense of superstition!
Posted by Uedder on 2014-09-11 02:27:00
Anyway best whining is clawpomb whining "weee first half is over and you still have 8 players!!" :P
Posted by Jeffro on 2014-09-11 03:01:38
I've trained my children to respond to me when I ask them:

"What does whining get?"

"Whining gets nothing..."

And so it should be with most things. I don't care if it's your superstition to whine about the first double skull you roll or the first reroll you fail... whining gets nothing. Stop it. Stop it all, you whiny freaking babies. Save your tears in a bucket under the table where nobody can see them and use it later to wash the sand from your vagina.
Posted by Overhamsteren on 2014-09-11 03:07:41
And then there's always the chance that the opponent will be affected by the whining and play less optimally.

Damn whiners >:[

in difference to a card game where the amount of bad luck is finite (you can exhaust all your bad cards resulting in being left with only good cards), in a dice game, bad luck after bad luck is equally likely as after good luck.

So, I'd say the statement is somewhat right in that... The lower the luck the less likely is the event. When low luck is less likely than average luck and average luck is an improvement, luck is more likely to improve (more likely to be average at any given point regardless of the previous results).

Then again the entire statement is only based on your perception. (Perception is underrated.)

But anyways, I'll talk about my perception then too. I try not to whine but in some rare cases it happens that a game gets the better of me. This is the case when I for instance rolled 4 critical double skulls, took some injuries, fell two TDs behind as a consequence and have little chance to recover. Ie. I'll probably not whine during the first drive.

Anyways, when this happens I remember case where I would proceed to roll even more skulls and ones AFTER starting to whine.

Of course, at some point in the game, maybe the next turn, maybe the turn thereafter, or even the next half, my luck would likely change.

Why is that? Luck changes plenty over the course of the game for both coaches. It is very easy to point at one point in the game and to state, come on that is terrible luck. But at the same time there are also almost always instances where you could state, man that was great luck.

So, predicting good luck after bad luck is a bit like a weatherforecast like:

"The rain will end and the sun will come out." Not given any additional information it is incredibly likely that eventually at some point after the rain the sun will come out.

Enough with all this sophistry,

When the dice shit is hitting the fan Iam standing on top of the dug out screaming to the heavens, cursing NUFFLE and his 6 bastard sons. That gets their attention real quick and you know what? They just smile, get a good laugh at this puny mortal cussing them out and then the dice change in my direction.

Sidenote: I just had a match when I rolled a double 1 on FAME and my foe rolled a double 6...I bitched about that for the first 4 turns...you know what happened? I ran his sorry ass off the pitch and laid a beating on him.

Bitching and moaning WINS GAMES dammit!!!
Posted by MattDakka on 2014-09-11 05:23:47
Actually whining achieves something: releasing the frustration and the anger you'd keep inside yourself if you chose to be silent and patient when struck by bad luck.
Posted by mrt1212 on 2014-09-11 05:53:30
PainState, you're on another plane of existence where probability is whackadoodle.
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-09-11 06:51:19
Tolerance level is a good one.

I do find I reach a point where I snap and start bitching like anything. For that I can only apologise to my opponents. But lord above it can piss you off sometimes.
Posted by paradocks on 2014-09-11 08:13:50
I don't ever whine unless an opponent willingly cheats. My trick: it doesn't make the slightest difference to my life if I win or lose.
Posted by PaddyMick on 2014-09-11 12:39:17
Moaning about dice is just being a dick. Acknowledgement of bad dice is ok.

I always wish my opponent good luck, especially when they need it to score, because I know it won't make any difference to the outcome.

Dice whiners often fail to mention or even notice the other guys bad luck, or their own good fortune. When I play against a whiner I always make sure I say 'well played' when they score through luck. Take the high road!
Posted by Lizzie on 2014-09-11 13:34:59
My last game I had six players out and I was losing 3-0 and my opponent whined that he dropped the ball for his fourth touch down. I was a little annoyed until I looked at his w/d/l record. That explained everything.
Posted by Beerox on 2014-09-11 20:43:46
"Already" at rock bottom? Clearly spoken by someone who has never been at rock bottom!

All whining...

There is no rock bottom. As long as you are still alive there is always a way to fall deeper into the abyss.
