Info on - The Players Code
Hey all, so below is info on what this is all about, my next blog is the actual code for you to sign. This is not something done officially by the site i.e. its nothing to do with christer. So what is The Players Code of Conduct -

In short - it a way of promoting a healthy playing environment, something that we can all work towards to make this site as enjoyable for all as possible.

The long explanation -

A test was done at two american univeristies - where some student signed a code of conduct about being honest and fair at the start of the trial, others did not. This was not a legal document, it just advisory about how best to conduct yourself, with 2 cardinal rules, and the rest basic principles on how to behave.

At the end of the study there was a test, and students were left alone to complete it. The trial found that those people that did not sign the code of conduct invariably cheated. Of those that did sign the code of conduct not a single one cheated.

The outcome of this study showed the researchers - most wanted to do the right thing, but needed a gentle reminder to keep them on track. Without it people would give in to more antisocial behaviours.

Why do I bring this study up? Well In Age of Sigmar they have a code of conduct that achieves something similar, for each general to read before a tournament starts and agree to. Which is having a positive impact on the AoS scene as it is starting to thrive and is a very friendly scene. Here is a good AoS discord server. For those interested. And it just seems like a really nice idea.

So my next blog will containt the Code Of conduct for you to read, and stick your signature at the bottom of the page. Which will hopefully reduce/stop the bad parts of playing online vs a whining opponent for example, and if someone that has signed the code starts acting up you can give them a gentle reminder of the code without any ill will or hard feelings.

I like this idea as I believe it could make this site even more friendly and welcoming. Which is surely a good thing right?

Intererstingly Throweck has made a blog that covers some of the same issues which you can check out too, on this link

coercion is violence.

no coercion here, no threats or force here.

its simply an idea to be better to each other, you don't have to. This isnt a legal document. Its solely an idea that has some merrit which some studies have cloncluded it is helps create/maintain healthy climate for playing in.

A brief players code display that has to be clicked at the start of every match might work too. Then every player has to tick it. If they have read it at least once they are more likely to follow it somewhat. Of course people don't want an extra click..

Extra click would suck.

Agreed no extra clicks. There are too many already

So, you didn't even try to put it up for discussion, to make it a grass root thing, you went straight from "Fumbbl should have this" to "I should write this and put it straight up asking people to sign". Didn't it occur to you that people could find that a mite condescending, especially from a guy who isn't exactly known as having set a great example of sticking to this in the past?

I'm sorry you feel that way verminardo. I assure you this was not meant to come across the way you feel it did.

The idea is not mine though, as I say this is something lifted from the AOS rulebook, and I just thought it was a nice way to promote a good playing environment.

I see from a comment in the next blog that you are referring to me complaining about bad rule design, presumably from my posts on TFF, rather than the way I conduct my self in game. And you make a valid point. Sometimes I do come across as terse, and negative, and I should work on improving that aspect of how I critique the rule set. Equally I think it is easy to misconstrue tonality in forum posts. For example I have said many times now that this is one of the best rule sets to date. Though its easy to focus on the things I am being negative about because they are more devise and I do admittedly get too impassioned about things because this game means so much to me and I hate seeing damaging changes to the rules. Fortunately most of the things I have been upset about have actually been retconned which has made the game even stronger e.g. we now have clarity that Cards are definitely optional and not mandatory, and cash in the inducement phase has also reverted to CRPs way of handling things., two of my biggest bones of contention. The only outstanding thing I can't stomach in this rule set is horatio being part of the core rules, and while we have a way of communicating to the rules designers about the game breaking nature of rules like this I think it is wise to do so. Though I concede I do need to get better at communicating my critiques without getting too emotional, or at the least coming across as too hot headed when that's not necessarily my intent.

All that said the code is more about behaving in a way that promotes a good environment in game. Not so much about things in the wider world. In game I feel I conduct my self in a very positive way and have done for at least the last 6 years. Prior to that there were certainly occasions in which I go too upset with bad dice, which i regret and I also feel this experience has helped me understand the positive impact of creating a code for oneself to abide by, to make this site etc.. more fun for everyone.

Hey Garion, I'm not talking about TFF at all, I'm talking about in game chat. I've specced a number of your games in past years and you are just simply a terrible loser, one of the worst I've seen. You basically make the other guy apologize for beating you.

I don't have any hard feelings here, I never beat you so it's nothing personal. I am just pointing out the obvious because I think someone should. You seem to be under the impression that you are a super pleasant opponent, but you only are when you're winning. Certainly not when you're losing to someone who is a worse coach than you.

hmm, well I have certainly been guilty of whinging in the past, though not for a long time, a good number of years since i've whinged at an opponent about dice etc.... But that period, years ago when I did whinge when losing, and it honestly will have been a number of years ago, I hold my hands up and apologise to any oppnents that were on the receiving end of it.
and being mindful of how you behave is really the point of this. I certainly am more mindful of it these days, and regret that I ever vented my frustration in my opponents direction.
