This weekend we had the BUBBLE 2014 tabletop tournament in Utrecht. It was a fun format: people had to bring 2 teams which each played 3 games. The catch: together, the teams had to represent enough tier points: for example, playing as dwarves for 3 games means playing either goblins, halflings, ogres, or ratless underworld on the other 3.
The kick-off results were terrible. I played as underworld first (tier 3), beating Nurgle (they got perfect defense), then slann (who got 2 blitzes!), and tied against another Underworld team, coached by SirSebstar (who was also 2/0/0 until then). As we played on my humans (tier 2) defeated more slann, and then defeated chaos pact in a close and fun game (he got 2 rocks and a pitch invasion with +2 FAME). This brought me in the lead as SirSebstar had a second tie along the way.
However, I had to face undead in the last game, which I tied. I knew SirSebstar was close in points. Going over to spectate the last quarter of his game, I snuck a peek at the scoreboard. And boy was it close!
The tournament awards 15/7/0 points to a win/tie/loss, with up to 5 points for cas and TDs added on top. Turns out that after entering my result, I was on 101 points, and SirSebstar was on 81 points; exactly 20 points behind me. At a score of 1-1, his humans kicked to Dave's Chaos Pact, but he had 11 players to the pact's 7. A little mess later, he was heading for a 2-1, and had already made four casualties, resulting in a full 20 points for that game.
This means we would both end on 101 points, with both of us playing 4/2/0 (including the tie against eachother). As a result, the tournament was decided on TDdif + cas dif. At the time I was spectating, we would have the exact same net TD + net cas too (in which case it would be decided by net TDs only, which would go to me). So as I was watching the conclusion of their game, I knew that if SirSebstar would inflict a single additional casualty in the process of making his 2-1, he would take home the trophy, but if he 'merely' won, then the weekend would be mine.
Then Dave went and badly hurt a catcher (his first cas of the game), and SirSebstar scored.
Phew! Got it by a hair's width. =D
